Abstract |
Confident use of medial surfaces in medical decision support systems requires evaluating their quality for detecting pathological deformations and describing anatomical volumes. Validation in the medical imaging field is a challenging task mainly due to the difficulties for getting consensual ground truth. In this paper we propose a validation benchmark for assessing medial surfaces in the context of medical applications. Our benchmark includes a home-made database of synthetic medial surfaces and volumes and specific scores for evaluating surface accuracy, its stability against volume deformations and its capabilities for accurate reconstruction of anatomical volumes. |

Abstract |
Confidence estimation has recently become a hot topic in image processing and computer vision.Yet, several definitions exist of the term “confidence” which are sometimes used interchangeably. This is a position paper, in which we aim to give an overview on existing definitions,
thereby clarifying the meaning of the used terms to facilitate further research in this field. Based on these clarifications, we develop a theory to compare confidence measures with respect to their quality. |

Abstract |
Obstacle avoidance remains a challenging task for Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAV), due to their limited payload capacity to carry advanced sensors. Unlike larger vehicles, MAV can only carry light weight sensors, for instance a camera, which is our main assumption in this work. We explore passive monocular depth estimation and propose a novel method Position Aided Depth Estimation
(PADE). We analyse PADE performance and compare it against the extensively used Time To Collision (TTC). We evaluate the accuracy, robustness to noise and speed of three Optical Flow (OF) techniques, combined with both depth estimation methods. Our results show PADE is more accurate than TTC at depths between 0-12 meters and is less sensitive to noise. Our findings highlight the potential application of PADE for MAV to perform safe autonomous navigation in
unknown and unstructured environments. |

Abstract |
State-of-the-art deformable part-based models based on latent SVM have shown excellent results on human detection. In this paper, we propose to train a multiview deformable part-based model with automatically generated part examples from virtual-world data. The method is efficient as: (i) the part detectors are trained with precisely extracted virtual examples, thus no latent learning is needed, (ii) the multiview pedestrian detector enhances the performance of the pedestrian root model, (iii) a top-down approach is used for part detection which reduces the searching space. We evaluate our model on Daimler and Karlsruhe Pedestrian Benchmarks with publicly available Caltech pedestrian detection evaluation framework and the result outperforms the state-of-the-art latent SVM V4.0, on both average miss rate and speed (our detector is ten times faster). |

Abstract |
We present a method for automatic struts detection and stent shape estimation in cross-sectional intravascular ultrasound images. A stent shape is first estimated through a comprehensive interpretation of the vessel morphology, performed using a supervised context-aware multi-class classification scheme. Then, the successive strut identification exploits both local appearance and the defined stent shape. The method is tested on 589 images obtained from 80 patients, achieving a F-measure of 74.1% and an averaged distance between manual and automatic struts of 0.10 mm. |

Abstract |
Small bowel motility dysfunctions are a widespread functional disorder characterized by abdominal pain and altered bowel habits in the absence of specific and unique organic pathology. Current methods of diagnosis are complex and can only be conducted at some highly specialized referral centers. Wireless Video Capsule Endoscopy (WCE) could be an interesting diagnostic alternative that presents excellent clinical advantages, since it is non-invasive and can be conducted by non specialists. The purpose of this work is to present a new method for the detection of wrinkle frames in WCE, a critical characteristic to detect one of the main motility events: contractions. The method goes beyond the use of one of the classical image feature, the Histogram |

Abstract |
Best Poster AwardOne of the big challenges of today person detectors is the decreasing of the false positive rate. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to customize person detectors in static camera scenarios in order to reduce this rate. This scheme includes background modeling for subtraction based on gradient histograms and Mean-Shift clustering. Our experiments show that the detection improved compared to using only the output from the pedestrian detector reducing 87% of the false positives and therefore the overall precision of the detection
was increased signicantly. |

Abstract |
We propose a method that aims to lessen the significant accuracy degradation
that a discriminative classifier can suffer when it is trained in a specific domain (source domain) and applied in a different one (target domain). The principal reason for this degradation is the discrepancies in the distribution of the features that feed the classifier in different domains. Therefore, we propose a domain adaptation method that maps the features from the different domains into a common subspace and learns a discriminative domain-invariant classifier within it. Our algorithm combines bilinear classifiers and multi-task learning for domain adaptation.
The bilinear classifier encodes the feature transformation and classification
parameters by a matrix decomposition. In this way, specific feature transformations for multiple domains and a shared classifier are jointly learned in a multi-task learning framework. Focusing on domain adaptation for visual object detection, we apply this method to the state-of-the-art deformable part-based model for cross domain pedestrian detection. Experimental results show that our method significantly avoids the domain drift and improves the accuracy when compared to several baselines. |

Abstract |
This paper defines an intelligent and interactive framework to classify multiple regions of interest from the original data on demand, without requiring any preprocessing or previous segmentation. The proposed intelligent and interactive approach is divided in three stages: visualize, training and testing. First, users visualize and label some samples directly on slices of the volume. Training and testing are based on a framework of Error Correcting Output Codes and Adaboost classifiers that learn to classify each region the user has painted. Later, at the testing stage, each classifier is directly applied on the rest of samples and combined to perform multi-class labeling, being used in the final rendering. We also parallelized the training stage using a GPU-based implementation for
obtaining a rapid interaction and classification. |

Abstract |
Termination of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) at its steady state so that useless iterations are not performed is a main point for its efficient application to black-box problems. Many EA algorithms evolve while there is still diversity in their population and, thus, they could be terminated by analyzing the behavior some measures of EA population diversity. This paper presents a numeric approximation to steady states that can be used to detect the moment EA population has lost its diversity for EA termination. Our condition has been applied to 3 EA paradigms based on diversity and a selection of functions
covering the properties most relevant for EA convergence.
Experiments show that our condition works regardless of the search space dimension and function landscape. |
