Title Incremental model learning for spectroscopy-based food analysis Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems Abbreviated Journal CILS
  Volume 167 Issue Pages 123-131
Keywords Incremental model learning; IGDCV technique; Subspace based learning; IdentificationVegetable oils; FT-IR spectroscopy
Abstract In this paper we propose the use of incremental learning for creating and improving multivariate analysis models in the field of chemometrics of spectral data. As main advantages, our proposed incremental subspace-based learning allows creating models faster, progressively improving previously created models and sharing them between laboratories and institutions without requiring transferring or disclosing individual spectra samples. In particular, our approach allows to improve the generalization and adaptability of previously generated models with a few new spectral samples to be applicable to real-world situations. The potential of our approach is demonstrated using vegetable oil type identification based on spectroscopic data as case study. Results show how incremental models maintain the accuracy of batch learning methodologies while reducing their computational cost and handicaps.

Title An overview of incremental feature extraction methods based on linear subspaces Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Knowledge-Based Systems Abbreviated Journal KBS
  Volume 145 Issue Pages 219-235
  Keywords
Abstract With the massive explosion of machine learning in our day-to-day life, incremental and adaptive learning has become a major topic, crucial to keep up-to-date and improve classification models and their corresponding feature extraction processes. This paper presents a categorized overview of incremental feature extraction based on linear subspace methods which aim at incorporating new information to the already acquired knowledge without accessing previous data. Specifically, this paper focuses on those linear dimensionality reduction methods with orthogonal matrix constraints based on global loss function, due to the extensive use of their batch approaches versus other linear alternatives. Thus, we cover the approaches derived from Principal Components Analysis, Linear Discriminative Analysis and Discriminative Common Vector methods. For each basic method, its incremental approaches are differentiated according to the subspace model and matrix decomposition involved in the updating process. Besides this categorization, several updating strategies are distinguished according to the amount of data used to update and to the fact of considering a static or dynamic number of classes. Moreover, the specific role of the size/dimension ratio in each method is considered. Finally, computational complexity, experimental setup and the accuracy rates according to published results are compiled and analyzed, and an empirical evaluation is done to compare the best approach of each kind.

Title Incremental Generalized Discriminative Common Vectors for Image Classification Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems Abbreviated Journal TNNLS
  Volume 26 Issue 8 Pages 1761 - 1775
  Keywords
Abstract Subspace-based methods have become popular due to their ability to appropriately represent complex data in such a way that both dimensionality is reduced and discriminativeness is enhanced. Several recent works have concentrated on the discriminative common vector (DCV) method and other closely related algorithms also based on the concept of null space. In this paper, we present a generalized incremental formulation of the DCV methods, which allows the update of a given model by considering the addition of new examples even from unseen classes. Having efficient incremental formulations of well-behaved batch algorithms allows us to conveniently adapt previously trained classifiers without the need of recomputing them from scratch. The proposed generalized incremental method has been empirically validated in different case studies from different application domains (faces, objects, and handwritten digits) considering several different scenarios in which new data are continuously added at different rates starting from an initial model.

Title A New Framework for Stereo Sensor Pose through Road Segmentation and Registration Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems Abbreviated Journal TITS
  Volume 12 Issue 4 Pages 954-966
  Keywords road detection
Abstract This paper proposes a new framework for real-time estimation of the onboard stereo head's position and orientation relative to the road surface, which is required for any advanced driver-assistance application. This framework can be used with all road types: highways, urban, etc. Unlike existing works that rely on feature extraction in either the image domain or 3-D space, we propose a framework that directly estimates the unknown parameters from the stream of stereo pairs' brightness. The proposed approach consists of two stages that are invoked for every stereo frame. The first stage segments the road region in one monocular view. The second stage estimates the camera pose using a featureless registration between the segmented monocular road region and the other view in the stereo pair. This paper has two main contributions. The first contribution combines a road segmentation algorithm with a registration technique to estimate the online stereo camera pose. The second contribution solves the registration using a featureless method, which is carried out using two different optimization techniques: 1) the differential evolution algorithm and 2) the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm. We provide experiments and evaluations of performance. The results presented show the validity of our proposed framework.

Title Reverse Engineering Expert Visual Observations: From Fixations To The Learning Of Spatial Filters With A Neural-Gas Algorithm Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Expert Systems with Applications Abbreviated Journal EXWA
  Volume 40 Issue 17 Pages 6707-6712
Keywords Neural gas; Expert vision; Eye-tracking; Fixations
Abstract Human beings can become experts in performing specific vision tasks, for example, doctors analysing medical images, or botanists studying leaves. With sufficient knowledge and experience, people can become very efficient at such tasks. When attempting to perform these tasks with a machine vision system, it would be highly beneficial to be able to replicate the process which the expert undergoes. Advances in eye-tracking technology can provide data to allow us to discover the manner in which an expert studies an image. This paper presents a first step towards utilizing these data for computer vision purposes. A growing-neural-gas algorithm is used to learn a set of Gabor filters which give high responses to image regions which a human expert fixated on. These filters can then be used to identify regions in other images which are likely to be useful for a given vision task. The algorithm is evaluated by learning filters for locating specific areas of plant leaves.

Title Taking advantage of Hyperspectral Imaging classification of urinary stones against conventional IR Spectroscopy Type Journal Article
Year 2014 Publication Journal of Biomedical Optics Abbreviated Journal JBiO
  Volume 19 Issue 12 Pages 126004-1 - 126004-9
  Keywords
Abstract The analysis of urinary stones is mandatory for the best management of the disease after the stone passage in order to prevent further stone episodes. Thus the use of an appropriate methodology for an individualized stone analysis becomes a key factor for giving the patient the most suitable treatment. A recently developed hyperspectral imaging methodology, based on pixel-to-pixel analysis of near-infrared spectral images, is compared to the reference technique in stone analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The developed classification model yields >90% correct classification rate when compared to IR and is able to precisely locate stone components within the structure of the stone with a 15 µm resolution. Due to the little sample pretreatment, low analysis time, good performance of the model, and the automation of the measurements, they become analyst independent; this methodology can be considered to become a routine analysis for clinical laboratories.

Title Multispectral Piecewise Planar Stereo using Manhattan-World Assumption Type Journal Article
Year 2013 Publication Pattern Recognition Letters Abbreviated Journal PRL
  Volume 34 Issue 1 Pages 52-61
Keywords Multispectral stereo rig; Dense disparity maps from multispectral stereo; Color and infrared images
Abstract This paper proposes a new framework for extracting dense disparity maps from a multispectral stereo rig. The system is constructed with an infrared and a color camera. It is intended to explore novel multispectral stereo matching approaches that will allow further extraction of semantic information. The proposed framework consists of three stages. Firstly, an initial sparse disparity map is generated by using a cost function based on feature matching in a multiresolution scheme. Then, by looking at the color image, a set of planar hypotheses is defined to describe the surfaces on the scene. Finally, the previous stages are combined by reformulating the disparity computation as a global minimization problem. The paper has two main contributions. The first contribution combines mutual information with a shape descriptor based on gradient in a multiresolution scheme. The second contribution, which is based on the Manhattan-world assumption, extracts a dense disparity representation using the graph cut algorithm. Experimental results in outdoor scenarios are provided showing the validity of the proposed framework.

Title Multimodal Stereo Vision System: 3D Data Extraction and Algorithm Evaluation Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processing Abbreviated Journal J-STSP
  Volume 6 Issue 5 Pages 437-446
  Keywords
Abstract This paper proposes an imaging system for computing sparse depth maps from multispectral images. A special stereo head consisting of an infrared and a color camera defines the proposed multimodal acquisition system. The cameras are rigidly attached so that their image planes are parallel. Details about the calibration and image rectification procedure are provided. Sparse disparity maps are obtained by the combined use of mutual information enriched with gradient information. The proposed approach is evaluated using a Receiver Operating Characteristics curve. Furthermore, a multispectral dataset, color and infrared images, together with their corresponding ground truth disparity maps, is generated and used as a test bed. Experimental results in real outdoor scenarios are provided showing its viability and that the proposed approach is not restricted to a specific domain.

Title Harmony Potentials: Fusing Global and Local Scale for Semantic Image Segmentation Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication International Journal of Computer Vision Abbreviated Journal IJCV
  Volume 96 Issue 1 Pages 83-102
  Keywords
Abstract The Hierarchical Conditional Random Field(HCRF) model have been successfully applied to a number of image labeling problems, including image segmentation. However, existing HCRF models of image segmentation do not allow multiple classes to be assigned to a single region, which limits their ability to incorporate contextual information across multiple scales.
At higher scales in the image, this representation yields an oversimpli ed model since multiple classes can be reasonably expected to appear within large regions. This simpli ed model particularly limits the impact of information at higher scales. Since class-label information at these scales is usually more reliable than at lower, noisier scales, neglecting this information is undesirable. To
address these issues, we propose a new consistency potential for image labeling problems, which we call the harmony potential. It can encode any possible combi-
nation of labels, penalizing only unlikely combinations of classes. We also propose an e ective sampling strategy over this expanded label set that renders tractable the underlying optimization problem. Our approach obtains state-of-the-art results on two challenging, standard benchmark datasets for semantic image segmentation: PASCAL VOC 2010, and MSRC-21.

Title Cross-Spectral Local Descriptors via Quadruplet Network Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Sensors Abbreviated Journal SENS
  Volume 17 Issue 4 Pages 873
  Keywords
Abstract This paper presents a novel CNN-based architecture, referred to as Q-Net, to learn local feature descriptors that are useful for matching image patches from two different spectral bands. Given correctly matched and non-matching cross-spectral image pairs, a quadruplet network is trained to map input image patches to a common Euclidean space, regardless of the input spectral band. Our approach is inspired by the recent success of triplet networks in the visible spectrum, but adapted for cross-spectral scenarios, where, for each matching pair, there are always two possible non-matching patches: one for each spectrum. Experimental evaluations on a public cross-spectral VIS-NIR dataset shows that the proposed approach improves the state-of-the-art. Moreover, the proposed technique can also be used in mono-spectral settings, obtaining a similar performance to triplet network descriptors, but requiring less training data.
