Title Segmentation of Tracheal Rings in Videobronchoscopy combining Geometry and Appearance Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication Proceedings of the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 1 Issue Pages 153--161
Keywords Video-bronchoscopy, tracheal ring segmentation, trachea geometric and appearance model
Abstract Videobronchoscopy is a medical imaging technique that allows interactive navigation inside the respiratory pathways and minimal invasive interventions. Tracheal procedures are ordinary interventions that require measurement of the percentage of obstructed pathway for injury (stenosis) assessment. Visual assessment of stenosis in videobronchoscopic sequences requires high expertise of trachea anatomy and is prone to human error. Accurate detection of tracheal rings is the basis for automated estimation of the size of stenosed trachea. Processing of videobronchoscopic images acquired at the operating room is a challenging task due to the wide range of artifacts and acquisition conditions. We present a model of the geometric-appearance of tracheal rings for its detection in videobronchoscopic videos. Experiments on sequences acquired at the operating room, show a performance close to inter-observer variability

Title Finger joint characterization from X-ray images for rheymatoid arthritis assessment Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication 6th International Conference on Biomedical Electronics and Devices Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 288-292
Keywords Rheumatoid Arthritis; X-Ray; Hand Joint; Sclerosis; Sharp Van der Heijde
Abstract In this study we propose amodular systemfor automatic rheumatoid arthritis assessment which provides a joint space width measure. A hand joint model is proposed based on the accurate analysis of a X-ray finger joint image sample set. This model shows that the sclerosis and the lower bone are the main necessary features in order to perform a proper finger joint characterization. We propose sclerosis and lower bone detection methods as well as the experimental setup necessary for its performance assessment. Our characterization is used to propose and compute a joint space width score which is shown to be related to the different degrees of arthritis. This assertion is verified by comparing our proposed score with Sharp Van der Heijde score, confirming that the lower our score is the more advanced is the patient affection.

Title Anisotropic Contour Completion Type Conference Article
Year 2003 Publication Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract In this paper we introduce a novel application of the diffusion tensor for anisotropic image processing. The Anisotropic Contour Completion (ACC) we suggest consists in extending the characteristic function of the open curve by means of a degenerated diffusion tensor that prevents any diffusion in the normal direction. We show that ACC is equivalent to a dilation with a continuous elliptic structural element that takes into account the local orientation of the contours to be closed. Experiments on contours extracted from real images show that ACC produces shapes able to adapt to any curve in an active contour framework. 1.

Title Optimal Stent Implantation: Three-dimensional Evaluation of the Mutual Position of Stent and Vessel via Intracoronary Ecography Type Conference Article
Year 1999 Publication Proceedings of International Conference on Computer in Cardiology (CIC´99) Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract We present a new automatic technique to visualize and quantify the mutual position between the stent and the vessel wall by considering their three-dimensional reconstruction. Two deformable generalized cylinders adapt to the image features in all IVUS planes corresponding to the vessel wall and the stent in order to reconstruct the boundaries of the stent and the vessel in space. The image features that characterize the stent and the vessel wall are determined in terms of edge and ridge image detectors taking into account the gray level of the image pixels. We show that the 30 reconstruction by deformable cylinders is accurate and robust due to the spatial data coherence in the considered volumetric IVUS image. The main clinic utility of the stent and vessel reconstruction by deformable’ cylinders consists of its possibility to visualize and to assess the optimal stent introduction.

Title A snake for model-based segmentation Type Conference Article
Year 1995 Publication Proc. Conf. Fifth Int Computer Vision Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 816-821
Keywords snakes; elastic matching; model-based segmenta tion
Abstract Despite the promising results of numerous applications, the hitherto proposed snake techniques share some common problems: snake attraction by spurious edge points, snake degeneration (shrinking and attening), convergence and stability of the deformation process, snake initialization and local determination of the parameters of elasticity. We argue here that these problems can be solved only when all the snake aspects are considered. The snakes proposed here implement a new potential eld and external force in order to provide a deformation convergence, attraction by both near and far edges as well as snake behaviour selective according to the edge orientation. Furthermore, we conclude that in the case of model-based seg mentation, the internal force should include structural information about the expected snake shape. Experiments using this kind of snakes for segmenting bones in complex hand radiographs show a signi cant improvement.

Title An improved model of snakes for model-based segmentation Type Conference Article
Year 1995 Publication Proceedings of Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 515-520
  Keywords
Abstract The main advantage of segmentation by snakes consists in its ability to incorporate smoothness constraints on the detected shapes that can occur. Likewise, we propose to model snakes with other properties that reflect the information provided about the object of interest in a different extent. We consider different kinds of snakes, those searching for contours with a certain direction, those preserving an object’s model, those seeking for symmetry, those expanding open, etc. The availability of such a collection of snakes allows not only the more complete use of the knowledge about the segmented object, but also to solve some problems of the existing snakes. Our experiments on segmentation of facial features justify the usefulness of snakes with different properties.
