Abstract (down) International conference on Cardiac electrophysiological simulation challenge
In this paper, we show that canonical (shape-based) geometries can be endowed to cardiac structures using tubular coordinates defined over their medial axis. We give an analytic formulation of these geometries by means of B-Splines. Since B-Splines present vector space structure PCA can be applied to their control points and statistical models relating boundaries and the interior of the anatomical structures can be derived. We demonstrate the applicability in two cardiac structures, the 3D Left Ventricular volume, and the 2D Left-Right ventricle set in 2D Short Axis view.

Abstract (down) In this workshop a 6 years experience in Project Based Learning (PBL) in Computer Graphics, Computer Engineering course at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) is presented. We use a Moodle environment suited to manage the documentation generated in PBL. The course is organized by means of two alternative routes: a classic itinerary of lectures and test-based evaluation and another with PBL. In the PBL itinerary we explain the organization in teamgroups, homework tutoring and monitoring and evaluation guidelines for students. We provide some of the work done by students, and the results of assessment surveys carried out to students during these years. We report the evolution of our PBL itinerary in terms of, both, organization and student surveys.
The workshop aims at discussing about on the advantages and disadvantages of using these active methodologies in technical degrees such as computer engineering, in order to debate about the most suitable way of organizing PBL and assessing students learning rate.

Title Characterization of ventricular torsion in healthy subjects using Gabor filters and a variational framework Type Conference Article
Year 2006 Publication Proc. Computers in Cardiology Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 877-880
  Keywords
Abstract (down) In this work, we present a fully automated method for tissue deformation estimation in tagged magnetic resonance images (TMRI). Gabor filter banks, tuned independently for each left ventricle level, provide optimally filtered complex images which phase remains constant along the cardiac cycle. This fact can be thought as the brightness constancy condition required by classical optical flow (OF) methods. Pairs of these filtered sequences, together with a variational formulation are used in a second step to obtain dense continuous deformation maps that we call Harmonic Phase Flow. This method has been used to determine reference values of ventricular torsion (VT) in a set of 8 healthy volunteers. The results encourage the use of VT as a useful parameter for ventricular function assessment in clinical routine.

Title Finger joint characterization from X-ray images for rheymatoid arthritis assessment Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication 6th International Conference on Biomedical Electronics and Devices Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 288-292
Keywords Rheumatoid Arthritis; X-Ray; Hand Joint; Sclerosis; Sharp Van der Heijde
Abstract (down) In this study we propose amodular systemfor automatic rheumatoid arthritis assessment which provides a joint space width measure. A hand joint model is proposed based on the accurate analysis of a X-ray finger joint image sample set. This model shows that the sclerosis and the lower bone are the main necessary features in order to perform a proper finger joint characterization. We propose sclerosis and lower bone detection methods as well as the experimental setup necessary for its performance assessment. Our characterization is used to propose and compute a joint space width score which is shown to be related to the different degrees of arthritis. This assertion is verified by comparing our proposed score with Sharp Van der Heijde score, confirming that the lower our score is the more advanced is the patient affection.

Abstract (down) In this paper we propose a new Computer Vision technique to reconstruct the vascular wall in space using a deformable model-based technique and compounding methods, based in biplane angiography and intravascular ultrasound data jicsion. It is also proposed a generalpurpose three-dimensional guided interpolation method. The three dimensional centerline of the vessel is reconstructed from geometrically corrected biplane angiographies using automatic segmentation methods and snakes. The IVUS image planes are located in the threedimensional space and correctly oriented. A led interpolation method based in B-SurJaces and snakes isused to fill the gaps among image planes

Title Hand line drawing interpretation as three-dimensional objects Type Journal Article
Year 1993 Publication Signal Processing – Intelligent systems for signal and image understanding Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 32 Issue 1-2 Pages 91-110
Keywords Line drawing interpretation; line labelling; scene analysis; man-machine interaction; CAD input; line extraction
Abstract (down) In this paper we present a technique to interpret hand line drawings as objects in a three-dimensional space. The object domain considered is based on planar surfaces with straight edges, concretely, on ansextension of Origami world to hidden lines. The line drawing represents the object under orthographic projection and it is sensed using a scanner. Our method is structured in two modules: feature extraction and feature interpretation. In the first one, image processing techniques are applied under certain tolerance margins to detect lines and junctions on the hand line drawing. Feature interpretation module is founded on line labelling techniques using a labelled junction dictionary. A labelling algorithm is here proposed. It uses relaxation techniques to reduce the number of incompatible labels with the junction dictionary so that the convergence of solutions can be accelerated. We formulate some labelling hypotheses tending to eliminate elements in two sets of labelled interpretations. That is, those which are compatible with the dictionary but do not correspond to three-dimensional objects and those which represent objects not very probable to be specified by means of a line drawing. New entities arise on the line drawing as a result of the extension of Origami world. These are defined to enunciate the assumptions of our method as well as to clarify the algorithms proposed. This technique is framed in a project aimed to implement a system to create 3D objects to improve man-machine interaction in CAD systems.

Title Discarding Non Informative Regions for Efficient Colonoscopy Image Analysis Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication 1st MICCAI Workshop on Computer-Assisted and Robotic Endoscopy Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 8899 Issue Pages 1-10
Keywords Image Segmentation; Polyps, Colonoscopy; Valley Information; Energy Maps
Abstract (down) In this paper we present a novel polyp region segmentation method for colonoscopy videos. Our method uses valley information associated to polyp boundaries in order to provide an initial segmentation. This first segmentation is refined to eliminate boundary discontinuities caused by image artifacts or other elements of the scene. Experimental results over a publicly annotated database show that our method outperforms both general and specific segmentation methods by providing more accurate regions rich in polyp content. We also prove how image preprocessing is needed to improve final polyp region segmentation.

Abstract (down) In this paper we introduce a novel application of the diffusion tensor for anisotropic image processing. The Anisotropic Contour Completion (ACC) we suggest consists in extending the characteristic function of the open curve by means of a degenerated diffusion tensor that prevents any diffusion in the normal direction. We show that ACC is equivalent to a dilation with a continuous elliptic structural element that takes into account the local orientation of the contours to be closed. Experiments on contours extracted from real images show that ACC produces shapes able to adapt to any curve in an active contour framework. 1.

Title Graph-Based Problem Explorer: A Software Tool to Support Algorithm Design Learning While Solving the Salesperson Problem Type Journal

Abstract (down) In this article, we present a sequence of activities in the form of a project in order to promote
learning on design and analysis of algorithms. The project is based on the resolution of a real problem, the salesperson problem, and it is theoretically grounded on the fundamentals of mathematical modelling. In order to support the students’ work, a multimedia tool, called Graph-based Problem Explorer (GbPExplorer), has been designed and refined to promote the development of computer literacy in engineering and science university students. This tool incorporates several modules to allow coding different algorithmic techniques solving the salesman problem. Based on an educational design research along five years, we observe that working with GbPExplorer during the project provides students with the possibility of representing the situation to be studied in the form of graphs and analyze them from a computational point of view.
