Title Cardiac Segmentation with Discriminant Active Contours Type Book Chapter
  Year 2003 Publication Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 211–217
  Keywords
Abstract Dynamic tracking of heart moving is one relevant target in medical imag- ing and can be helpful for analyzing heart dynamics in the study of several cardiac diseases. For this aim, a previous segmentation problem of such structures is stated, based on certain relevant features (like edges or intensity levels, textures, etc.) Clas- sical active models have been used, but they fail when overlapping structures or not well-defined contours are present. Automatic feature learning systems may be a pow- erful tool. Discriminant active contours present optimal results in this kind of problem. They are a kind of deformable models that converge to an optimal object segmenta- tion that dynamically adapts to the object contour. The feature space is designed from a filter bank in order to guarantee the search and learning of the set of relevant fea- tures for optimal classification on each part of the object. Tracking of target evolution is obtained through the whole set of images, using information from the actual and previous stages. Feedback systems are implemented to guarantee the minimum well- separable classification set in each segmentation step. Our implementation has been proved with several series of Magnetic Resonance with improved results in segmenta- tion in comparison to previous methods.

Title A model for image generation and symbol recognition through the deformation of lineal shapes Type Journal Article
Year 2003 Publication Pattern Recognition Letters Abbreviated Journal PRL
  Volume 24 Issue 15 Pages 2857-2867
  Keywords
Abstract We describe a general framework for the recognition of distorted images of lineal shapes, which relies on three items: a model to represent lineal shapes and their deformations, a model for the generation of distorted binary images and the combination of both models in a common probabilistic framework, where the generation of deformations is related to an internal energy, and the generation of binary images to an external energy. Then, recognition consists in the minimization of a global energy function, performed by using the EM algorithm. This general framework has been applied to the recognition of hand-drawn lineal symbols in graphic documents.

Title Anisotropic Contour Completion Type Conference Article
Year 2003 Publication Proceedings of the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing Abbreviated Journal

Abstract In this paper we introduce a novel application of the diffusion tensor for anisotropic image processing. The Anisotropic Contour Completion (ACC) we suggest consists in extending the characteristic function of the open curve by means of a degenerated diffusion tensor that prevents any diffusion in the normal direction. We show that ACC is equivalent to a dilation with a continuous elliptic structural element that takes into account the local orientation of the contours to be closed. Experiments on contours extracted from real images show that ACC produces shapes able to adapt to any curve in an active contour framework. 1.

Title Curvature Vector Flow to Assure Convergent Deformable Models for Shape Modelling Type Book Chapter

Abstract Poor convergence to concave shapes is a main limitation of snakes as a standard segmentation and shape modelling technique. The gradient of the external energy of the snake represents a force that pushes the snake into concave regions, as its internal energy increases when new inexion points are created. In spite of the improvement of the external energy by the gradient vector ow technique, highly non convex shapes can not be obtained, yet. In the present paper, we develop a new external energy based on the geometry of the curve to be modelled. By tracking back the deformation of a curve that evolves by minimum curvature ow, we construct a distance map that encapsulates the natural way of adapting to non convex shapes. The gradient of this map, which we call curvature vector ow (CVF), is capable of attracting a snake towards any contour, whatever its geometry. Our experiments show that, any initial snake condition converges to the curve to be modelled in optimal time.

Title Active Vessel: A New Multimedia Workstation for Intravascular Ultrasound and Angiography Fusion Type Journal Article
Year 2003 Publication Computers in Cardiology Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 30 Issue Pages 65-68
  Keywords
Abstract AcriveVessel is a new multimedia workstation which enables the visualization, acquisition and handling of both image modalities, on- and ofline. It enables DICOM v3.0 decompression and browsing, video acquisition, repmduction and storage for IntraVascular UltraSound (IVUS) and angiograms with their corresponding ECG,automatic catheter segmentation in angiography images (using fast marching algorithm). BSpline models definition for vessel layers on IVUS images sequence and an extensively validated tool to fuse information. This approach defines the correspondence of every IVUS image with its correspondent point in the angiogram and viceversa. The 3 0 reconstruction of the NUS catheterhessel enables real distance measurements as well as threedimensional visualization showing vessel tortuosity in the space.
