Title Recurrent Comparator with attention models to detect counterfeit documents Type Conference Article
Year 2019 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract This paper is focused on the detection of counterfeit documents via the recurrent comparison of the security textured background regions of two images. The main contributions are twofold: first we apply and adapt a recurrent comparator architecture with attention mechanism to the counterfeit detection task, which constructs a representation of the background regions by recurrently condition the next observation, learning the difference between genuine and counterfeit images through iterative glimpses. Second we propose a new counterfeit document dataset to ensure the generalization of the learned model towards the detection of the lack of resolution during the counterfeit manufacturing. The presented network, outperforms state-of-the-art classification approaches for counterfeit detection as demonstrated in the evaluation.

Title Towards the recognition of compound music notes in handwritten music scores Type Conference Article
Year 2016 Publication (up) 15th international conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract The recognition of handwritten music scores still remains an open problem. The existing approaches can only deal with very simple handwritten scores mainly because of the variability in the handwriting style and the variability in the composition of groups of music notes (i.e. compound music notes). In this work we focus on this second problem and propose a method based on perceptual grouping for the recognition of compound music notes. Our method has been tested using several handwritten music scores of the CVC-MUSCIMA database and compared with a commercial Optical Music Recognition (OMR) software. Given that our method is learning-free, the obtained results are promising.

Title Using the MGGI Methodology for Category-based Language Modeling in Handwritten Marriage Licenses Books Type Conference Article
Year 2016 Publication (up) 15th international conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract Handwritten marriage licenses books have been used for centuries by ecclesiastical and secular institutions to register marriages. The information contained in these historical documents is useful for demography studies and
genealogical research, among others. Despite the generally simple structure of the text in these documents, automatic transcription and semantic information extraction is difficult due to the distinct and evolutionary vocabulary, which is composed mainly of proper names that change along the time. In previous
works we studied the use of category-based language models to both improve the automatic transcription accuracy and make easier the extraction of semantic information. Here we analyze the main causes of the semantic errors observed in previous results and apply a Grammatical Inference technique known as MGGI to improve the semantic accuracy of the language model obtained. Using this language model, full handwritten text recognition experiments have been carried out, with results supporting the interest of the proposed approach.

Title Multi-class Binary Symbol Classification with Circular Blurred Shape Models Type Conference Article
Year 2009 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 5716 Issue Pages 1005–1014
  Keywords
Abstract Multi-class binary symbol classification requires the use of rich descriptors and robust classifiers. Shape representation is a difficult task because of several symbol distortions, such as occlusions, elastic deformations, gaps or noise. In this paper, we present the Circular Blurred Shape Model descriptor. This descriptor encodes the arrangement information of object parts in a correlogram structure. A prior blurring degree defines the level of distortion allowed to the symbol. Moreover, we learn the new feature space using a set of Adaboost classifiers, which are combined in the Error-Correcting Output Codes framework to deal with the multi-class categorization problem. The presented work has been validated over different multi-class data sets, and compared to the state-of-the-art descriptors, showing significant performance improvements.

Title Confidence Measures for Error Correction in Interactive Transcription of Handwritten Text Type Conference Article
Year 2009 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 5716 Issue Pages 567-574
  Keywords
Abstract An effective approach to transcribe old text documents is to follow an interactive-predictive paradigm in which both, the system is guided by the human supervisor, and the supervisor is assisted by the system to complete the transcription task as efficiently as possible. In this paper, we focus on a particular system prototype called GIDOC, which can be seen as a first attempt to provide user-friendly, integrated support for interactive-predictive page layout analysis, text line detection and handwritten text transcription. More specifically, we focus on the handwriting recognition part of GIDOC, for which we propose the use of confidence measures to guide the human supervisor in locating possible system errors and deciding how to proceed. Empirical results are reported on two datasets showing that a word error rate not larger than a 10% can be achieved by only checking the 32% of words that are recognised with less confidence.

Title A Preliminary Study of Image Analysis for Parasite Detection on Honey Bees Type Conference Article
Year 2018 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 10882 Issue Pages 465-473
  Keywords
Abstract Varroa destructor is a parasite harming bee colonies. As the worldwide bee population is in danger, beekeepers as well as researchers are looking for methods to monitor the health of bee hives. In this context, we present a preliminary study to detect parasites on bee videos by means of image analysis and machine learning techniques. For this purpose, each video frame is analyzed individually to extract bee image patches, which are then processed to compute image descriptors and finally classified into mite and no mite bees. The experimental results demonstrated the adequacy of the proposed method, which will be a perfect stepping stone for a further bee monitoring system.

Title Vegetation Index Estimation from Monospectral Images Type Conference Article
Year 2018 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Images Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 10882 Issue Pages 353-362
  Keywords
Abstract This paper proposes a novel approach to estimate Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from just the red channel of a RGB image. The NDVI index is defined as the ratio of the difference of the red and infrared radiances over their sum. In other words, information from the red channel of a RGB image and the corresponding infrared spectral band are required for its computation. In the current work the NDVI index is estimated just from the red channel by training a Conditional Generative Adversarial Network (CGAN). The architecture proposed for the generative network consists of a single level structure, which combines at the final layer results from convolutional operations together with the given red channel with Gaussian noise to enhance
details, resulting in a sharp NDVI image. Then, the discriminative model
estimates the probability that the NDVI generated index came from the training dataset, rather than the index automatically generated. Experimental results with a large set of real images are provided showing that a Conditional GAN single level model represents an acceptable approach to estimate NDVI index.

Title Automatic Non-Rigid Temporal Alignment of IVUS Sequences Type Conference Article
Year 2012 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 1 Issue Pages 642-650
  Keywords
Abstract Clinical studies on atherosclerosis regression/progression performed by Intravascular Ultrasound analysis require the alignment of pullbacks of the same patient before and after clinical interventions. In this paper, a methodology for the automatic alignment of IVUS sequences based on the Dynamic Time Warping technique is proposed. The method is adapted to the specific IVUS alignment task by applying the non-rigid alignment technique to multidimensional morphological signals, and by introducing a sliding window approach together with a regularization term. To show the effectiveness of our method, an extensive validation is performed both on synthetic data and in-vivo IVUS sequences. The proposed method is robust to stent deployment and post dilation surgery and reaches an alignment error of approximately 0.7 mm for in-vivo data, which is comparable to the inter-observer variability.

Title RGBN Multispectral Images: a Novel Color Restoration Approach Type Conference Article
Year 2017 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Practical Applications of Agents and Multi-Agent System Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
Keywords Multispectral Imaging; Free Sensor Model; Neural Network
Abstract This paper describes a color restoration technique used to remove NIR information from single sensor cameras where color and near-infrared images are simultaneously acquired|referred to in the literature as RGBN images. The proposed approach is based on a neural network architecture that learns the NIR information contained in the RGBN images. The proposed approach is evaluated on real images obtained by using a pair of RGBN cameras. Additionally, qualitative comparisons with a nave color correction technique based on mean square
error minimization are provided.

Title Learning to Colorize Infrared Images Type Conference Article
Year 2017 Publication (up) 15th International Conference on Practical Applications of Agents and Multi-Agent System Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
Keywords CNN in multispectral imaging; Image colorization
Abstract This paper focuses on near infrared (NIR) image colorization by using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) architecture model. The proposed architecture consists of two stages. Firstly, it learns to colorize the given input, resulting in a RGB image. Then, in the second stage, a discriminative model is used to estimate the probability that the generated image came from the training dataset, rather than the image automatically generated. The proposed model starts the learning process from scratch, because our set of images is very di erent from the dataset used in existing pre-trained models, so transfer learning strategies cannot be used. Infrared image colorization is an important problem when human perception need to be considered, e.g, in remote sensing applications. Experimental results with a large set of real images are provided showing the validity of the proposed approach.

Title Detecting loss of diversity for an efficient termination of EAs Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication (up) 15th International Symposium on Symbolic and Numeric Algorithms for Scientific Computing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 561 - 566
Keywords EA termination; EA population diversity; EA steady state
Abstract Termination of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) at its steady state so that useless iterations are not performed is a main point for its efficient application to black-box problems. Many EA algorithms evolve while there is still diversity in their population and, thus, they could be terminated by analyzing the behavior some measures of EA population diversity. This paper presents a numeric approximation to steady states that can be used to detect the moment EA population has lost its diversity for EA termination. Our condition has been applied to 3 EA paradigms based on diversity and a selection of functions
covering the properties most relevant for EA convergence.
Experiments show that our condition works regardless of the search space dimension and function landscape.
