Title (up) Asking questions on handwritten document collections Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal IJDAR
  Volume 24 Issue Pages 235-249

Abstract This work addresses the problem of Question Answering (QA) on handwritten document collections. Unlike typical QA and Visual Question Answering (VQA) formulations where the answer is a short text, we aim to locate a document snippet where the answer lies. The proposed approach works without recognizing the text in the documents. We argue that the recognition-free approach is suitable for handwritten documents and historical collections where robust text recognition is often difficult. At the same time, for human users, document image snippets containing answers act as a valid alternative to textual answers. The proposed approach uses an off-the-shelf deep embedding network which can project both textual words and word images into a common sub-space. This embedding bridges the textual and visual domains and helps us retrieve document snippets that potentially answer a question. We evaluate results of the proposed approach on two new datasets: (i) HW-SQuAD: a synthetic, handwritten document image counterpart of SQuAD1.0 dataset and (ii) BenthamQA: a smaller set of QA pairs defined on documents from the popular Bentham manuscripts collection. We also present a thorough analysis of the proposed recognition-free approach compared to a recognition-based approach which uses text recognized from the images using an OCR. Datasets presented in this work are available to download at docvqa.org.

Title (up) Asymmetric Distances for Binary Embeddings Type Journal Article

Abstract In large-scale query-by-example retrieval, embedding image signatures in a binary space offers two benefits: data compression and search efficiency. While most embedding algorithms binarize both query and database signatures, it has been noted that this is not strictly a requirement. Indeed, asymmetric schemes which binarize the database signatures but not the query still enjoy the same two benefits but may provide superior accuracy. In this work, we propose two general asymmetric distances which are applicable to a wide variety of embedding techniques including Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH), Locality Sensitive Binary Codes (LSBC), Spectral Hashing (SH), PCA Embedding (PCAE), PCA Embedding with random rotations (PCAE-RR), and PCA Embedding with iterative quantization (PCAE-ITQ). We experiment on four public benchmarks containing up to 1M images and show that the proposed asymmetric distances consistently lead to large improvements over the symmetric Hamming distance for all binary embedding techniques.

We also propose a novel simple binary embedding technique – PCA Embedding (PCAE) – which is shown to yield competitive results with respect to more complex algorithms such as SH and SSH.

Title (up) Attributed Graph Grammar for floor plan analysis Type Conference Article
Year 2015 Publication 13th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition ICDAR2015 Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 726 - 730

Abstract In this paper, we propose the use of an Attributed Graph Grammar as unique framework to model and recognize the structure of floor plans. This grammar represents a building as a hierarchical composition of structurally and semantically related elements, where common representations are learned stochastically from annotated data. Given an input image, the parsing consists on constructing that graph representation that better agrees with the probabilistic model defined by the grammar. The proposed method provides several advantages with respect to the traditional floor plan analysis techniques. It uses an unsupervised statistical approach for detecting walls that adapts to different graphical notations and relaxes strong structural assumptions such are straightness and orthogonality. Moreover, the independence between the knowledge model and the parsing implementation allows the method to learn automatically different building configurations and thus, to cope the existing variability. These advantages are clearly demonstrated by comparing it with the most recent floor plan interpretation techniques on 4 datasets of real floor plans with different notations.

Title (up) Augmented Songbook: an Augmented Reality Educational Application for Raising Music Awareness Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Multimedia Tools and Applications Abbreviated Journal MTAP
  Volume 77 Issue 11 Pages 13773-13798
Keywords Augmented reality; Document image matching; Educational applications
Abstract This paper presents the development of an Augmented Reality mobile application which aims at sensibilizing young children to abstract concepts of music. Such concepts are, for instance, the musical notation or the idea of rhythm. Recent studies in Augmented Reality for education suggest that such technologies have multiple benefits for students, including younger ones. As mobile document image acquisition and processing gains maturity on mobile platforms, we explore how it is possible to build a markerless and real-time application to augment the physical documents with didactic animations and interactive virtual content. Given a standard image processing pipeline, we compare the performance of different local descriptors at two key stages of the process. Results suggest alternatives to the SIFT local descriptors, regarding result quality and computational efficiency, both for document model identification and perspective transform estimation. All experiments are performed on an original and public dataset we introduce here.
