Title Symbol Recognition Using a Concept Lattice of Graphical Patterns Type Conference Article
Year 2009 Publication (down) 8th IAPR International Workshop on Graphics Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract In this paper we propose a new approach to recognize symbols by the use of a concept lattice. We propose to build a concept lattice in terms of graphical patterns. Each model symbol is decomposed in a set of composing graphical patterns taken as primitives. Each one of these primitives is described by boundary moment invariants. The obtained concept lattice relates which symbolic patterns compose a given graphical symbol. A Hasse diagram is derived from the context and is used to recognize symbols affected by noise. We present some preliminary results over a variation of the dataset of symbols from the GREC 2005 symbol recognition contest.

Title An Evaluation of Handwritten Text Recognition Methods for Historical Ciphered Manuscripts Type Conference Article
Year 2023 Publication (down) 7th International Workshop on Historical Document Imaging and Processing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 7-12
  Keywords
Abstract This paper investigates the effectiveness of different deep learning HTR families, including LSTM, Seq2Seq, and transformer-based approaches with self-supervised pretraining, in recognizing ciphered manuscripts from different historical periods and cultures. The goal is to identify the most suitable method or training techniques for recognizing ciphered manuscripts and to provide insights into the challenges and opportunities in this field of research. We evaluate the performance of these models on several datasets of ciphered manuscripts and discuss their results. This study contributes to the development of more accurate and efficient methods for recognizing historical manuscripts for the preservation and dissemination of our cultural heritage.

Title A Recursive Embedding Approach to Median Graph Computation Type Conference Article
Year 2009 Publication (down) 7th IAPR – TC–15 Workshop on Graph–Based Representations in Pattern Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 5534 Issue Pages 113–123
  Keywords
Abstract The median graph has been shown to be a good choice to infer a representative of a set of graphs. It has been successfully applied to graph-based classification and clustering. Nevertheless, its computation is extremely complex. Several approaches have been presented up to now based on different strategies. In this paper we present a new approximate recursive algorithm for median graph computation based on graph embedding into vector spaces. Preliminary experiments on three databases show that this new approach is able to obtain better medians than the previous existing approaches.

Title Page Segmentation of Structured Documents Using 2D Stochastic Context-Free Grammars Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication (down) 6th Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 7887 Issue Pages 133-140
  Keywords
Abstract In this paper we define a bidimensional extension of Stochastic Context-Free Grammars for page segmentation of structured documents. Two sets of text classification features are used to perform an initial classification of each zone of the page. Then, the page segmentation is obtained as the most likely hypothesis according to a grammar. This approach is compared to Conditional Random Fields and results show significant improvements in several cases. Furthermore, grammars provide a detailed segmentation that allowed a semantic evaluation which also validates this model.

Title Towards Modelling an Attention-Based Text Localization Process Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication (down) 6th Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 7887 Issue Pages 296-303
Keywords text localization; visual attention; eye guidance
Abstract This note introduces a visual attention model of text localization in real-world scenes. The core of the model built upon the proto-object concept is discussed. It is shown how such dynamic mid-level representation of the scene can be derived in the framework of an action-perception loop engaging salience, text information value computation, and eye guidance mechanisms.
Preliminary results that compare model generated scanpaths with those eye-tracked from human subjects are presented.

Title Hybrid grammar language model for handwritten historical documents recognition Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication (down) 6th Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 7887 Issue Pages 117-124
  Keywords
Abstract In this paper we present a hybrid language model for the recognition of handwritten historical documents with a structured syntactical layout. Using a hidden Markov model-based recognition framework, a word-based grammar with a closed dictionary is enhanced by a character sequence recognition method. This allows to recognize out-of-dictionary words in controlled parts of the recognition, while keeping a closed vocabulary restriction for other parts. While the current status is work in progress, we can report an improvement in terms of character error rate.
