Title (down) Real-time Object Segmentation using a Bag of Features Approach Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication 13th International Conference of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 220 Issue Pages 321–329
Keywords Object Segmentation; Bag Of Features; Feature Quantization; Densely sampled descriptors
Abstract In this paper, we propose an object segmentation framework, based on the popular bag of features (BoF), which can process several images per second while achieving a good segmentation accuracy assigning an object category to every pixel of the image. We propose an efficient color descriptor to complement the information obtained by a typical gradient-based local descriptor. Results show that color proves to be a useful cue to increase the segmentation accuracy, specially in large homogeneous regions. Then, we extend the Hierarchical K-Means codebook using the recently proposed Vector of Locally Aggregated Descriptors method. Finally, we show that the BoF method can be easily parallelized since it is applied locally, thus the time necessary to process an image is further reduced. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in the standard PASCAL 2007 Segmentation Challenge object segmentation dataset.

Title (down) Real-time Lexicon-free Scene Text Retrieval Type Journal Article
Year 2021 Publication Pattern Recognition Abbreviated Journal PR
  Volume 110 Issue Pages 107656
  Keywords
Abstract In this work, we address the task of scene text retrieval: given a text query, the system returns all images containing the queried text. The proposed model uses a single shot CNN architecture that predicts bounding boxes and builds a compact representation of spotted words. In this way, this problem can be modeled as a nearest neighbor search of the textual representation of a query over the outputs of the CNN collected from the totality of an image database. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms previous state-of-the-art, while offering a significant increase in processing speed and unmatched expressiveness with samples never seen at training time. Several experiments to assess the generalization capability of the model are conducted in a multilingual dataset, as well as an application of real-time text spotting in videos.

Title (down) Real-time Isolated Hand Sign Language RecognitioN Using Deep Networks and SVD Type Journal
Year 2022 Publication Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 13 Issue Pages 591–611
  Keywords
Abstract One of the challenges in computer vision models, especially sign language, is real-time recognition. In this work, we present a simple yet low-complex and efficient model, comprising single shot detector, 2D convolutional neural network, singular value decomposition (SVD), and long short term memory, to real-time isolated hand sign language recognition (IHSLR) from RGB video. We employ the SVD method as an efficient, compact, and discriminative feature extractor from the estimated 3D hand keypoints coordinators. Despite the previous works that employ the estimated 3D hand keypoints coordinates as raw features, we propose a novel and revolutionary way to apply the SVD to the estimated 3D hand keypoints coordinates to get more discriminative features. SVD method is also applied to the geometric relations between the consecutive segments of each finger in each hand and also the angles between these sections. We perform a detailed analysis of recognition time and accuracy. One of our contributions is that this is the first time that the SVD method is applied to the hand pose parameters. Results on four datasets, RKS-PERSIANSIGN (99.5±0.04), First-Person (91±0.06), ASVID (93±0.05), and isoGD (86.1±0.04), confirm the efficiency of our method in both accuracy (mean+std) and time recognition. Furthermore, our model outperforms or gets competitive results with the state-of-the-art alternatives in IHSLR and hand action recognition.

Title (down) Real-Time Gaze Tracking with Appearance-Based Models Type Journal Article
Year 2008 Publication Machine Vision Applications Abbreviated Journal MVAP
  Volume 20 Issue 6 Pages 353-364
Keywords Keywords Eyelid and iris tracking, Appearance models, Blinking, Iris saccade, Real-time gaze tracking
Abstract Psychological evidence has emphasized the importance of eye gaze analysis in human computer interaction and emotion interpretation. To this end, current image analysis algorithms take into consideration eye-lid and iris motion detection using colour information and edge detectors. However, eye movement is fast and and hence difficult to use to obtain a precise and robust tracking. Instead, our
method proposed to describe eyelid and iris movements as continuous variables using appearance-based tracking. This approach combines the strengths of adaptive appearance models, optimization methods and backtracking techniques. Thus,
in the proposed method textures are learned on-line from near frontal images and illumination changes, occlusions and fast movements are managed. The method achieves real-time performance by combining two appearance-based trackers to a
backtracking algorithm for eyelid estimation and another for iris estimation. These contributions represent a significant advance towards a reliable gaze motion description for HCI and expression analysis, where the strength of complementary
methodologies are combined to avoid using high quality images, colour information, texture training, camera settings and other time-consuming processes.

Title (down) Real-time gating of IVUS sequences based on motion blur analysis: Method and quantitative validation Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication 13th international conference on Medical image computing and computer-assisted intervention Abbreviated Journal
  Volume II Issue Pages 59-67

Abstract Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) is an image-guiding technique for cardiovascular diagnostic, providing cross-sectional images of vessels. During the acquisition, the catheter is pulled back (pullback) at a constant speed in order to acquire spatially subsequent images of the artery. However, during this procedure, the heart twist produces a swinging fluctuation of the probe position along the vessel axis. In this paper we propose a real-time gating algorithm based on the analysis of motion blur variations during the IVUS sequence. Quantitative tests performed on an in-vitro ground truth data base shown that our method is superior to state of the art algorithms both in computational speed and accuracy.

Title (down) Real-Time Face Detection and Tracking Utilising OpenMP and ROS Type Conference Article

Abstract The first requisite of a robot to succeed in social interactions is accurate human localisation, i.e. subject detection and tracking. Later, it is estimated whether an interaction partner seeks attention, for example by interpreting the position and orientation of the body. In computer vision, these cues usually are obtained in colour images, whose qualities are degraded in ill illuminated social scenes. In these scenarios depth sensors offer a richer representation. Therefore, it is important to combine colour and depth information. The
second aspect that plays a fundamental role in the acceptance of social robots is their real-time-ability. Processing colour and depth images is computationally demanding. To overcome this we propose a parallelisation strategy of face detection and tracking based on two different architectures: message passing and shared memory. Our results demonstrate high accuracy in
low computational time, processing nine times more number of frames in a parallel implementation. This provides a real-time social robot interaction.

Abstract Robust and dense computation of depth information from stereo-camera systems is a computationally demanding requirement for real-time autonomous driving. Semi-Global Matching (SGM) [1] approximates heavy-computation global algorithms results but with lower computational complexity, therefore it is a good candidate for a real-time implementation. SGM minimizes energy along several 1D paths across the image. The aim of this work is to provide a real-time system producing reliable results on energy-efficient hardware. Our design runs on a NVIDIA Titan X GPU at 104.62 FPS and on a NVIDIA Drive PX at 6.7 FPS, promising for real-time platforms

Title (down) Real Time Vehicle Pose Using On-Board Stereo Vision System Type Conference Article

Abstract This paper presents a robust technique for a real time estimation of both camera’s position and orientation—referred as pose. A commercial stereo vision system is used. Unlike previous approaches, it can be used either for urban or highway scenarios. The proposed technique consists of two stages. Initially, a compact 2D representation of the original 3D data points is computed. Then, a RANSAC based least squares approach is used for fitting a plane to the road. At the same time,
relative camera’s position and orientation are computed. The proposed technique is intended to be used on a driving assistance scheme for applications such as obstacle or pedestrian detection. Experimental results on urban environments with different road geometries are presented.
