Title Cascade analysis for intestinal contraction detection Type Conference Article
Year 2006 Publication 20th International Congress and exhibition Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue (up) Pages 9-10
Keywords intestine video analysis, anisotropic features, support vector machine, cascade of classifiers
Abstract In this work, we address the study of intestinal contractions in a novel approach based on a machine learning framework to process data from Wireless Capsule Video Endoscopy. Wireless endoscopy represents a unique way to visualize the intestine motility by creating long videos to visualize intestine dynamics. In this paper we argue that to analyze huge amount of wireless endoscopy data and define robust methods for contraction detection we should base our approach on sophisticated machine learning techniques. In particular, we propose a cascade of classifiers in order to remove different physiological phenomenon and obtain the motility pattern of small intestines. Our results show obtaining high specificity and sensitivity rates that highlight the high efficiency of the selected approach and support the feasibility of the proposed methodology in the automatic detection and analysis of intestine contractions.

Title Automatic Detection of Intestinal Juices in Wireless Capsule Video Endoscopy Type Conference Article
Year 2006 Publication 18th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Abbreviated Journal

Abstract Wireless capsule video endoscopy is a novel and challenging clinical technique, whose major reported drawback relates to the high amount of time needed for video visualization. In this paper, we propose a method for the rejection of the parts of the video resulting not valid for analysis by means of automatic detection of intestinal juices. We applied Gabor filters for the characterization of the bubble-like shape of intestinal juices in fasting patients. Our method achieves a significant reduction in visualization time, with no relevant loss of valid frames. The proposed approach is easily extensible to other image analysis scenarios where the described pattern of bubbles can be found.

Title Fast and Robust l1-averaging-based Pose Estimation for Driving Scenarios Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication 24th British Machine Vision Conference Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue (up) Pages
  Keywords SLAM
Abstract Robust visual pose estimation is at the core of many computer vision applications, being fundamental for Visual SLAM and Visual Odometry problems. During the last decades, many approaches have been proposed to solve these problems, being RANSAC one of the most accepted and used. However, with the arrival of new challenges, such as large driving scenarios for autonomous vehicles, along with the improvements in the data gathering frameworks, new issues must be considered. One of these issues is the capability of a technique to deal with very large amounts of data while meeting the realtime
constraint. With this purpose in mind, we present a novel technique for the problem of robust camera-pose estimation that is more suitable for dealing with large amount of data, which additionally, helps improving the results. The method is based on a combination of a very fast coarse-evaluation function and a robust ℓ1-averaging procedure. Such scheme leads to high-quality results while taking considerably less time than RANSAC.
Experimental results on the challenging KITTI Vision Benchmark Suite are provided, showing the validity of the proposed approach.

Title Adaptive Image Sampling and Windows Classification for On-board Pedestrian Detection Type Conference Article
Year 2007 Publication Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Computer Vision Systems Abbreviated Journal ICVS
  Volume Issue (up) Pages
  Keywords Pedestrian Detection
Abstract On–board pedestrian detection is in the frontier of the state–of–the–art since it implies processing outdoor scenarios from a mobile platform and searching for aspect–changing objects in cluttered urban environments. Most promising approaches include the development of classifiers based on feature selection and machine learning. However, they use a large number of features which compromises real–time. Thus, methods for running the classifiers in only a few image windows must be provided. In this paper we contribute in both aspects, proposing a camera
pose estimation method for adaptive sparse image sampling, as well as a classifier for pedestrian detection based on Haar wavelets and edge orientation histograms as features and AdaBoost as learning machine. Both proposals are compared with relevant approaches in the literature, showing comparable results but reducing processing time by four for the sampling tasks and by ten for the classification one.

Title Computer Vision Approaches for Pedestrian Detection: Visible Spectrum Survey Type Conference Article
Year 2007 Publication 3rd Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis, LNCS 4477 Abbreviated Journal
Volume 1 Issue (up) Pages 547–554
  Keywords Pedestrian detection
Abstract Pedestrian detection from images of the visible spectrum is a high relevant area of research given its potential impact in the design of pedestrian protection systems. There are many proposals in the literature but they lack a comparative viewpoint. According to this, in this paper we first propose a common framework where we fit the different approaches, and second we use this framework to provide a comparative point of view of the details of such different approaches, pointing out also the main challenges to be solved in the future. In summary, we expect
this survey to be useful for both novel and experienced researchers in the field. In the first case, as a clarifying snapshot of the state of the art; in the second, as a way to unveil trends and to take conclusions from the comparative study.
