Abstract |
Wireless Video Capsule Endoscopy is a clinical technique consisting of the analysis of images from the intestine which are pro- vided by an ingestible device with a camera attached to it. In this paper we propose an automatic system to diagnose severe intestinal motility disfunctions using the video endoscopy data. The system is based on the application of computer vision techniques within a machine learn- ing framework in order to obtain the characterization of diverse motil- ity events from video sequences. We present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system and compare them with the ground-truth provided by the gastroenterologists. |

Abstract |
Optical Music Recognition refers to the task of transcribing the image of a music score into a machine-readable format. Many music scores are written in a single staff, and therefore, they could be treated as a sequence. Therefore, this work explores the use of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) Recurrent Neural Networks for reading the music score sequentially, where the LSTM helps in keeping the context. For training, we have used a synthetic dataset of more than 40000 images, labeled at primitive level. The experimental results are promising, showing the benefits of our approach. |

Abstract |
The operational model of agonism has been widely used for the analysis of agonist action since its formulation in 1983. The model includes the Em parameter, which is defined as the maximum response of the system. The methods for Em estimation provide Em values not significantly higher than the maximum responses achieved by full agonists. However, it has been found that that some classes of compounds as, for instance, superagonists and positive allosteric modulators can increase the full agonist maximum response, implying upper limits for Em and thereby posing doubts on the validity of Em estimates. Because of the correlation between Em and operational efficacy, τ, wrong Em estimates will yield wrong τ estimates.
In this presentation, the operational model of agonism and various methods for the simulation of allosteric modulation will be analyzed. Alternatives for curve fitting will be presented and discussed. |

Abstract |
Aggregates of misfolded proteins are a hallmark of many age-related diseases. Recently, they have been linked to aging of Escherichia coli (E. coli) where protein aggregates accumulate at the old pole region of the aging bacterium. Because of the potential of E. coli as a model organism, elucidating aging and protein aggregation in this bacterium may pave the way to significant advances in our global understanding of aging. A first obstacle along this path is to decipher the mechanisms by which protein aggregates are targeted to specific intercellular locations. Here, using an integrated approach based on individual-based modeling, time-lapse fluorescence microscopy and automated image analysis, we show that the movement of aging-related protein aggregates in E. coli is purely diffusive (Brownian). Using single-particle tracking of protein aggregates in live E. coli cells, we estimated the average size and diffusion constant of the aggregates. Our results provide evidence that the aggregates passively diffuse within the cell, with diffusion constants that depend on their size in agreement with the Stokes-Einstein law. However, the aggregate displacements along the cell long axis are confined to a region that roughly corresponds to the nucleoid-free space in the cell pole, thus confirming the importance of increased macromolecular crowding in the nucleoids. We thus used 3D individual-based modeling to show that these three ingredients (diffusion, aggregation and diffusion hindrance in the nucleoids) are sufficient and necessary to reproduce the available experimental data on aggregate localization in the cells. Taken together, our results strongly support the hypothesis that the localization of aging-related protein aggregates in the poles of E. coli results from the coupling of passive diffusion-aggregation with spatially non-homogeneous macromolecular crowding. They further support the importance of “soft” intracellular structuring (based on macromolecular crowding) in diffusion-based protein localization in E. coli. |

Abstract |
This work tackles the categorization of general linear radial patterns by means of the valleys and ridges detection and the use of descriptors of directional information, which are provided by steerable filters in different regions of the image. We successfully apply our proposal in the specific case of automatic detection of tonic contractions in video capsule endoscopy, which represent a paradigmatic example of linear radial patterns. |

Abstract |
Creases are a type of ridge/valley structures that can be characterized by local conditions. Therefore, creaseness refers to local ridgeness and valleyness. The curvature K of the level curves and the mean curvature kM of the level surfaces are good measures of creaseness for 2-d and 3-d images, respectively. However, the way they are computed gives rise to discontinuities, reducing their usefulness in many applications. We propose a new creaseness measure, based on these curvatures, that avoids the discontinuities. We demonstrate its usefulness in the registration of CT and MR brain volumes, from the same patient, by searching the maximum in the correlation of their creaseness responses (ridgeness from the CT and valleyness from the MR). Due to the high dimensionality of the space of transforms, the search is performed by a hierarchical approach combined with an optimization method at each level of the hierarchy |
