Abstract: With an ageing population, the issue of care provision is becoming increasingly important. The simple aspiration of the majority of older people is to live safely and well at home. Housing will be part of health & care integration in the following years and decades. A higher proportion of people will have to rely on informal care through family, friends, neighbors and others who
provide care to an older person in need of assistance (around 80% of care across the EU). They do not usually have a formal status and are usually unpaid. We need to ensure that all disabled or chronically ill people can get the help they need without overburdening their families.
The physical and emotional stress of carers is one of the dangers that this dependency can bring. To prevent carers burnout it is necessary to provide new solutions that are affordable and user friendly for the families and caregivers.

Abstract: In this paper, we give an overview on the emerging trend of the digitized self, focusing on visual lifelogging through wearable cameras. This is about continuously recording our life from a first-person view by wearing a camera that passively captures images. On one hand, visual lifelogging has opened the door to a large number of applications, including health. On the other, it has also boosted new challenges in the field of data analysis as well as new ethical concerns. While currently increasing efforts are being devoted to exploit lifelogging data for the improvement of personal well-being, we believe there are still many interesting applications to explore, ranging from tourism to the digitization of human behavior.

Abstract: We present a method that can dramatically accelerate object detection with part based models. The method is based on the observation that the cost of detection is likely to be dominated by the cost of matching each part to the image, and not by the cost of computing the optimal configuration of the parts as commonly assumed. Therefore accelerating detection requires minimizing the number of
part-to-image comparisons. To this end we propose a multiple-resolutions hierarchical part based model and a corresponding coarse-to-fine inference procedure that recursively eliminates from the search space unpromising part
placements. The method yields a ten-fold speedup over the standard dynamic programming approach and is complementary to the cascade-of-parts approach of [9]. Compared to the latter, our method does not have parameters to be determined empirically, which simplifies its use during the training of the model. Most importantly, the two techniques can be combined to obtain a very significant speedup, of two orders of magnitude in some cases. We evaluate our method extensively on the PASCAL VOC and INRIA datasets, demonstrating a very high increase in the detection speed with little degradation of the accuracy.

Abstract: Image values are the result of a combination of visual information coming from multiple sources. Recovering information from the multiple factors thatproduced an image seems a hard and ill-posed problem. However, it is important to observe that humans develop the ability to interpret images and recognize and isolate specific physical properties of the scene.
Images describing a single physical characteristic of an scene are called intrinsic images. These images would benefit most computer vision tasks which are often affected by the multiple complex effects that are usually found in natural images (e.g. cast shadows, specularities, interreflections...).
In this thesis we analyze the problem of intrinsic image estimation from different perspectives, including the theoretical formulation of the problem, the visual cues that can be used to estimate the intrinsic components and the evaluation mechanisms of the problem.

Abstract: Building a visual summary from an egocentric photostream captured by a lifelogging wearable camera is of high interest for different applications (e.g. memory reinforcement). In this paper, we propose a new summarization method based on keyframes selection that uses visual features extracted bymeans of a convolutional neural network. Our method applies an unsupervised clustering for dividing the photostreams into events, and finally extracts the most relevant keyframe for each event. We assess the results by applying a blind-taste test on a group of 20 people who assessed the quality of the
summaries.

Abstract: Lifelogging devices based on photo/video are spreading faster everyday. This growth can represent great benefits to develop methods for extraction of meaningful information about the user wearing the device and his/her environment. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised strategy for easily discovering objects relevant to the person wearing a first-person camera. The egocentric video sequence acquired by the camera, uses both the appearance extracted by means of a deep convolutional neural network and an object refill methodology that allow to discover objects even in case of small amount of object appearance in the collection of images. We validate our method on a sequence of 1000 egocentric daily images and obtain results with an F-measure of 0.5, 0.17 better than the state of the art approach.

detectors and four different local descriptors are tested in all the possible combinations. The experiments are conducted in a database consisting of 30 model documents acquired on 6 different backgrounds, totaling more than 36.000 test images.

Abstract: In this paper we present an industrial application for the automatic screening of incoming multi-page documents in a banking workflow aimed at determining whether these documents are properly signed or not. The proposed method is divided in three main steps. First individual pages are classified in order to identify the pages that should contain a signature. In a second step, we segment within those key pages the location where the signatures should appear. The last step checks whether the signatures are present or not. Our method is tested in a real large-scale environment and we report the results when checking two different types of real multi-page contracts, having in total more than 14,500 pages.

Abstract: In this paper we present an efficient segmentation-free word spotting method, applied in the context of historical document collections, that follows the query-by-example paradigm. We use a patch-based framework where local patches are described by a bag-of-visual-words model powered by SIFT descriptors. By projecting the patch descriptors to a topic space with the latent semantic analysis technique and compressing the descriptors with the product quantization method, we are able to efficiently index the document information both in terms of memory and time. The proposed method is evaluated using four different collections of historical documents achieving good performances on both handwritten and typewritten scenarios. The yielded performances outperform the recent state-of-the-art keyword spotting approaches.

Abstract: In this paper, we present a new querying paradigm for handwritten keyword spotting. We propose to represent handwritten word images both by visual and audio representations, enabling a query-by-speech keyword spotting system. The two representations are merged together and projected to a common sub-space in the training phase. This transform allows to, given a spoken query, retrieve word instances that were only represented by the visual modality. In addition, the same method can be used backwards at no additional cost to produce a handwritten text-tospeech system. We present our first results on this new querying mechanism using synthetic voices over the George Washington
dataset.

Abstract: Detecting social interaction in videos relying solely on visual cues is a valuable task that is receiving increasing attention in recent years. In this work, we address this problem in the challenging domain of egocentric photo-streams captured by a low temporal resolution wearable camera (2fpm). The major difficulties to be handled in this context are the sparsity of observations as well as unpredictability of camera motion and attention orientation due to the fact that the camera is worn as part of clothing. Our method consists of four steps: multi-faces localization and tracking, 3D localization, pose estimation and analysis of f-formations. By estimating pair-to-pair interaction probabilities over the sequence, our method states the presence or absence of interaction with the camera wearer and specifies which people are more involved in the interaction. Abstract: Egocentric images offer a hands-free way to record daily experiences and special events, where social interactions are of special interest. A natural question that arises is how to extract and track the appearance of multiple persons in a social event captured by a wearable camera. In this paper, we propose a novel method to find correspondences of multiple-faces in low temporal resolution egocentric sequences acquired through a wearable camera. This kind of sequences imposes additional challenges to the multitracking problem with respect to conventional videos. Due to the free motion of the camera and to its low temporal resolution (2 fpm), abrupt changes in the field of view, in illumination conditions and in the target location are very frequent. To overcome such a difficulty, we propose to generate, for each detected face, a set of correspondences along the whole sequence that we call tracklet and to take advantage of their redundancy to deal with both false positive face detections and unreliable tracklets. Similar tracklets are grouped into the so called extended bag-of-tracklets (eBoT), which are aimed to correspond to specific persons. Finally, a prototype tracklet is extracted for each eBoT. We validated our method over a dataset of 18.000 images from 38 egocentric sequences with 52 trackable persons and compared to the state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its effectiveness and robustness.
