Title Rotation Invariant Hand-Drawn Symbol Recognition based on a Dynamic Time Warping Model Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal IJDAR
Volume 13 Issue 3 Pages 229–241
Keywords
Abstract One of the major difficulties of handwriting symbol recognition is the high variability among symbols because of the different writer styles. In this paper, we introduce a robust approach for describing and recognizing hand-drawn symbols tolerant to these writer style differences. This method, which is invariant to scale and rotation, is based on the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm. The symbols are described by vector sequences, a variation of the DTW distance is used for computing the matching distance, and K-Nearest Neighbor is used to classify them. Our approach has been evaluated in two benchmarking scenarios consisting of hand-drawn symbols. Compared with state-of-the-art methods for symbol recognition, our method shows higher tolerance to the irregular deformations induced by hand-drawn strokes.

Title On the use of textural features for writer identification in old handwritten music scores Type Conference Article
Year 2009 Publication 10th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 996 - 1000
Keywords
Abstract Writer identification consists in determining the writer of a piece of handwriting from a set of writers. In this paper we present a system for writer identification in old handwritten music scores which uses only music notation to determine the author. The steps of the proposed system are the following. First of all, the music sheet is preprocessed for obtaining a music score without the staff lines. Afterwards, four different methods for generating texture images from music symbols are applied. Every approach uses a different spatial variation when combining the music symbols to generate the textures. Finally, Gabor filters and Grey-scale Co-ocurrence matrices are used to obtain the features. The classification is performed using a k-NN classifier based on Euclidean distance. The proposed method has been tested on a database of old music scores from the 17th to 19th centuries, achieving encouraging identification rates.

Title Writer Identification in Old Handwritten Music Scores Type Book Chapter

Abstract The aim of writer identification is determining the writer of a piece of handwriting from a set of writers. In this paper we present a system for writer identification in old handwritten music scores. Even though an important amount of compositions contains handwritten text in the music scores, the aim of our work is to use only music notation to determine the author. The steps of the system proposed are the following. First of all, the music sheet is preprocessed and normalized for obtaining a single binarized music line, without the staff lines. Afterwards, 100 features are extracted for every music line, which are subsequently used in a k-NN classifier that compares every feature vector with prototypes stored in a database. By applying feature selection and extraction methods on the original feature set, the performance is increased. The proposed method has been tested on a database of old music scores from the 17th to 19th centuries, achieving a recognition rate of about 95%.

Title A Combination of Features for Symbol-Independent Writer Identification in Old Music Scores Type Journal Article

Abstract The aim of writer identification is determining the writer of a piece of handwriting from a set of writers. In this paper, we present an architecture for writer identification in old handwritten music scores. Even though an important amount of music compositions contain handwritten text, the aim of our work is to use only music notation to determine the author. The main contribution is therefore the use of features extracted from graphical alphabets. Our proposal consists in combining the identification results of two different approaches, based on line and textural features. The steps of the ensemble architecture are the following. First of all, the music sheet is preprocessed for removing the staff lines. Then, music lines and texture images are generated for computing line features and textural features. Finally, the classification results are combined for identifying the writer. The proposed method has been tested on a database of old music scores from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, achieving a recognition rate of about 92% with 20 writers.

Title A Bimodal Crowdsourcing Platform for Demographic Historical Manuscripts Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication Digital Access to Textual Cultural Heritage Conference Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 103-108

Abstract In this paper we present a crowdsourcing web-based application for extracting information from demographic handwritten document images. The proposed application integrates two points of view: the semantic information for demographic research, and the ground-truthing for document analysis research. Concretely, the application has the contents view, where the information is recorded into forms, and the labeling view, with the word labels for evaluating document analysis techniques. The crowdsourcing architecture allows to accelerate the information extraction (many users can work simultaneously), validate the information, and easily provide feedback to the users. We finally show how the proposed application can be extended to other kind of demographic historical manuscripts.

Title Symbol Classification using Dynamic Aligned Shape Descriptor Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication 20th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Abbreviated Journal

Abstract Shape representation is a difficult task because of several symbol distortions, such as occlusions, elastic deformations, gaps or noise. In this paper, we propose a new descriptor and distance computation for coping with the problem of symbol recognition in the domain of Graphical Document Image Analysis. The proposed D-Shape descriptor encodes the arrangement information of object parts in a circular structure, allowing different levels of distortion. The classification is performed using a cyclic Dynamic Time Warping based method, allowing distortions and rotation. The methodology has been validated on different data sets, showing very high recognition rates.

Title The ICDAR/GREC 2013 Music Scores Competition: Staff Removal Type Book Chapter
Year 2014 Publication Graphics Recognition. Current Trends and Challenges Abbreviated Journal
Volume 8746 Issue Pages 207-220
Keywords Competition; Graphics recognition; Music scores; Writer identification; Staff removal
Abstract The first competition on music scores that was organized at ICDAR and GREC in 2011 awoke the interest of researchers, who participated in both staff removal and writer identification tasks. In this second edition, we focus on the staff removal task and simulate a real case scenario concerning old and degraded music scores. For this purpose, we have generated a new set of semi-synthetic images using two degradation models that we previously introduced: local noise and 3D distortions. In this extended paper we provide an extended description of the dataset, degradation models, evaluation metrics, the participant’s methods and the obtained results that could not be presented at ICDAR and GREC proceedings due to page limitations.
