Abstract |
Retinal images are routinely used in ophthalmology to study the optical nerve head and the retina. To assess objectively the evolution of an illness, images taken at different times must be registered. Most methods so far have been designed specifically for a single image modality, like temporal series or stereo pairs of angiographies, fluorescein angiographies or scanning laser ophthalmoscope (SLO) images, which makes them prone to fail when conditions vary. In contrast, the method we propose has shown to be accurate and reliable on all the former modalities. It has been adapted from the 3D registration of CT and MR image to 2D. Relevant features (also known as landmarks) are extracted by means of a robust creaseness operator, and resulting images are iteratively transformed until a maximum in their correlation is achieved. Our method has succeeded in more than 100 pairs tried so far, in all cases including also the scaling as a parameter to be optimized |

Abstract |
In this paper we present a retrieval-based application aimed at assisting a user to semi-automatically segment an incoming flow of historical newspaper images by automatically detecting a particular type of pages based on their appearance. A visual descriptor is used to assess page similarity while a relevance feedback process allow refining the results iteratively. The application is tested on a large dataset of digitised historic newspapers. |

Abstract |
Comic books constitute an important cultural heritage asset in many countries. Digitization combined with subsequent document understanding enable direct content-based search as opposed to metadata only search (e.g. album title or author name). Few studies have been done in this direction. In this work we detail a novel approach for the automatic text localization in scanned comics book pages, an essential step towards a fully automatic comics book understanding. We focus on speech text as it is semantically important and represents the majority of the text present in comics. The approach is compared with existing methods of text localization found in the literature and results are presented. |

Abstract |
Videobronchoscopy is a medical imaging technique that allows interactive navigation inside the respiratory pathways and minimal invasive interventions. Tracheal procedures are ordinary interventions that require measurement of the percentage of obstructed pathway for injury (stenosis) assessment. Visual assessment of stenosis in videobronchoscopic sequences requires high expertise of trachea anatomy and is prone to human error. Accurate detection of tracheal rings is the basis for automated estimation of the size of stenosed trachea. Processing of videobronchoscopic images acquired at the operating room is a challenging task due to the wide range of artifacts and acquisition conditions. We present a model of the geometric-appearance of tracheal rings for its detection in videobronchoscopic videos. Experiments on sequences acquired at the operating room, show a performance close to inter-observer variability |

Abstract |
In this study we propose amodular systemfor automatic rheumatoid arthritis assessment which provides a joint space width measure. A hand joint model is proposed based on the accurate analysis of a X-ray finger joint image sample set. This model shows that the sclerosis and the lower bone are the main necessary features in order to perform a proper finger joint characterization. We propose sclerosis and lower bone detection methods as well as the experimental setup necessary for its performance assessment. Our characterization is used to propose and compute a joint space width score which is shown to be related to the different degrees of arthritis. This assertion is verified by comparing our proposed score with Sharp Van der Heijde score, confirming that the lower our score is the more advanced is the patient affection. |

Abstract |
This paper presents an approach to mitigate the contribution of blood vessels to the energy image used at different tasks of automatic colonoscopy image analysis. This goal is achieved by introducing a characterization of endoluminal scene objects which allows us to differentiate between the trace of 2-dimensional visual objects, such as vessels, and shades from 3-dimensional visual objects, such as folds. The proposed characterization is based on the influence that the object shape has in the resulting visual feature, and it leads to the development of a blood vessel attenuation algorithm. A database consisting of manually labelled masks was built in order to test the performance of our method, which shows an encouraging success in blood vessel mitigation while keeping other structures intact. Moreover, by extending our method to the only available polyp localization
algorithm tested on a public database, blood vessel mitigation proved to have a positive influence on the overall performance. |

Abstract |
This paper presents a preliminary study on the registration and fusion of cross-spectral imaging. The objective is to evaluate the validity of widely used computer vision approaches when they are applied at different
spectral bands. In particular, we are interested in merging images from the infrared (both long wave infrared: LWIR and near infrared: NIR) and visible spectrum (VS). Experimental results with different data sets are presented. |

Abstract |
In this study we present a unifed model of the visual cortex for predicting visual attention using real image scenes. Feedforward mechanisms from RGC and LGN have been functionally modeled using wavelet filters at distinct orientations and scales for each chromatic pathway (Magno-, Parvo-, Konio-cellular) and polarity (ON-/OFF-center), by processing image components in the CIE Lab space. In V1, we process cortical interactions with an excitatory-inhibitory network of fring rate neurons, initially proposed by (Li, 1999), later extended by (Penacchio et al. 2013). Firing rates from model’s output have been used as predictors of neuronal activity to be projected in a map in superior colliculus (with WTA-like computations), determining locations of visual fxations. These locations will be considered as already visited areas for future saccades, therefore we integrated a spatiotemporal function of inhibition of return mechanisms (where LIP/FEF is responsible) to feed to the model with spatial memory for next saccades. Foveation mechanisms have been simulated with a cortical magnifcation function, which distort spatial viewing properties for each fxation. Results show lower prediction errors than with respect no IoR cases (Fig. 1), and it is functionally consistent with human psychophysical measurements. Our model follows a biologically-constrained architecture, previously shown to reproduce visual saliency (Berga & Otazu, 2018), visual discomfort (Penacchio et al. 2016), brightness (Penacchio et al. 2013) and chromatic induction (Cerda & Otazu, 2016). |

Abstract |
Plaque analysis in IVUS planes needs accurate intima and adventitia models. Large variety in adventitia descriptors difficulties its detection and motivates using a classification strategy for selecting points on the structure. Whatever the set of descriptors used, the selection stage suffers from fake responses due to noise and uncompleted true curves. In order to smooth background noise while strengthening responses, we apply a restricted anisotropic filter that homogenizes grey levels along the image significant structures. Candidate points are extracted by means of a simple semi supervised adaptive classification of the filtered image response to edge and calcium detectors. The final model is obtained by interpolating the former line segments with an anisotropic contour closing technique based on functional extension principles. |

Abstract |
XBadges is a research project based on the hypothesis that commercial video games (nonserious games) can train soft skills. We measure persistence, patial reasoning and risk taking before and after subjects paticipate in controlled game playing sessions.
In addition, we have developed an automatic facial expression recognition system capable of inferring their emotions while playing, allowing us to study the role of emotions in soft skills acquisition. We have used Flappy Bird, Pacman and Tetris for assessing changes in persistence, risk taking and spatial reasoning respectively.
Results show how playing Tetris significantly improves spatial reasoning and how playing Pacman significantly improves prudence in certain areas of behavior. As for emotions, they reveal that being concentrated helps to improve performance and skills acquisition. Frustration is also shown as a key element. With the results obtained we are able to glimpse multiple applications in areas which need soft skills development. |
