Jose Elias Yauri. (2023)." Deep Learning Based Data Fusion Approaches for the Assessment of Cognitive States on EEG Signals" (Aura Hernandez, & Debora Gil, Eds.). Ph.D. thesis, IMPRIMA, .
Abstract: For millennia, the study of the couple brain-mind has fascinated the humanity in order to understand the complex nature of cognitive states. A cognitive state is the state of the mind at a specific time and involves cognition activities to acquire and process information for making a decision, solving a problem, or achieving a goal.
While normal cognitive states assist in the successful accomplishment of tasks; on the contrary, abnormal states of the mind can lead to task failures due to a reduced cognition capability. In this thesis, we focus on the assessment of cognitive states by means of the analysis of ElectroEncephaloGrams (EEG) signals using deep learning methods. EEG records the electrical activity of the brain using a set of electrodes placed on the scalp that output a set of spatiotemporal signals that are expected to be correlated to a specific mental process.
From the point of view of artificial intelligence, any method for the assessment of cognitive states using EEG signals as input should face several challenges. On the one hand, one should determine which is the most suitable approach for the optimal combination of the multiple signals recorded by EEG electrodes. On the other hand, one should have a protocol for the collection of good quality unambiguous annotated data, and an experimental design for the assessment of the generalization and transfer of models. In order to tackle them, first, we propose several convolutional neural architectures to perform data fusion of the signals recorded by EEG electrodes, at raw signal and feature levels. Four channel fusion methods, easy to incorporate into any neural network architecture, are proposed and assessed. Second, we present a method to create an unambiguous dataset for the prediction of cognitive mental workload using serious games and an Airbus-320 flight simulator. Third, we present a validation protocol that takes into account the levels of generalization of models based on the source and amount of test data.
Finally, the approaches for the assessment of cognitive states are applied to two use cases of high social impact: the assessment of mental workload for personalized support systems in the cockpit and the detection of epileptic seizures. The results obtained from the first use case show the feasibility of task transfer of models trained to detect workload in serious games to real flight scenarios. The results from the second use case show the generalization capability of our EEG channel fusion methods at k-fold cross-validation, patient-specific, and population levels.

Abstract: Plaque analysis in IVUS planes needs accurate intima and adventitia models. Large variety in adventitia descriptors difficulties its detection and motivates using a classification strategy for selecting points on the structure. Whatever the set of descriptors used, the selection stage suffers from fake responses due to noise and uncompleted true curves. In order to smooth background noise while strengthening responses, we apply a restricted anisotropic filter that homogenizes grey levels along the image significant structures. Candidate points are extracted by means of a simple semi supervised adaptive classification of the filtered image response to edge and calcium detectors. The final model is obtained by interpolating the former line segments with an anisotropic contour closing technique based on functional extension principles.

Abstract: A usual tool in cardiac disease diagnosis is vessel plaque assessment by analysis of IVUS sequences. Manual detection of lumen-intima, intima-media and media-adventitia vessel borders is the main activity of physicians in the process of plaque quantification. Large variety in vessel border descriptors, as well as, shades, artifacts and blurred response due to ultrasound physical properties troubles automated media-adventitia segmentation. This experimental work presents a solution to such a complex problem. The process blends advanced anisotropic filtering operators and statistic classification techniques, achieving an efficient vessel border modelling strategy. First of all, we introduce the theoretic base of the method. After that, we show the steps of the algorithm, validating the method with statistics that show that the media-adventitia border detection achieves an accuracy in the range of inter-observer variability regardless of plaque nature, vessel geometry and incomplete vessel borders. Finally, we present a little Matlab application to the automatic media-adventitia border.

Abstract: Tagged Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive technique used to examine cardiac deformation in vivo. An Angle Image is a representation of a Tagged MRI which recovers the relative position of the tissue respect to the distorted tags. Thus cardiac deformation can be estimated. This paper describes a new approach to generate Angle Images using a bank of Gabor filters in short axis cardiac Tagged MRI. Our method improves the Angle Images obtained by global techniques, like HARP, with a local frequency analysis. We propose to use the phase response of a combination of a Gabor filters bank, and use it to find a more precise deformation of the left ventricle. We demonstrate the accuracy of our method over HARP by several experimental results.

Abstract: IntraVascular UltraSound (IVUS) imaging is a useful tool in diagnosis of cardiac diseases since sequences completely show the morphology of coronary vessels. Vessel borders detection, especially the external adventitia layer, plays a central role in morphological measures and, thus, their segmentation feeds development of medical imaging techniques. Deterministic approaches fail to yield optimal results due to the large amount of IVUS artifacts and vessel borders descriptors. We propose using classification techniques to learn the set of descriptors and parameters that best detect vessel borders. Statistical hypothesis test on the error between automated detections and manually traced borders by 4 experts show that our detections keep within inter-observer variability.

Abstract: In this paper we present a technique to interpret hand line drawings as objects in a three-dimensional space. The object domain considered is based on planar surfaces with straight edges, concretely, on ansextension of Origami world to hidden lines. The line drawing represents the object under orthographic projection and it is sensed using a scanner. Our method is structured in two modules: feature extraction and feature interpretation. In the first one, image processing techniques are applied under certain tolerance margins to detect lines and junctions on the hand line drawing. Feature interpretation module is founded on line labelling techniques using a labelled junction dictionary. A labelling algorithm is here proposed. It uses relaxation techniques to reduce the number of incompatible labels with the junction dictionary so that the convergence of solutions can be accelerated. We formulate some labelling hypotheses tending to eliminate elements in two sets of labelled interpretations. That is, those which are compatible with the dictionary but do not correspond to three-dimensional objects and those which represent objects not very probable to be specified by means of a line drawing. New entities arise on the line drawing as a result of the extension of Origami world. These are defined to enunciate the assumptions of our method as well as to clarify the algorithms proposed. This technique is framed in a project aimed to implement a system to create 3D objects to improve man-machine interaction in CAD systems.

Ernest Valveny, & Enric Marti. (1999). "Application of deformable template matching to symbol recognition in hand-written architectural draw " In Proceedings of the Fifth International Conference on. Bangalore (India).
Abstract: We propose to use deformable template matching as a new approach to recognize characters and lineal symbols in hand-written line drawings, instead of traditional methods based on vectorization and feature extraction. Bayesian formulation of the deformable template matching allows combining fidelity to the ideal shape of the symbol with maximum flexibility to get the best fit to the input image. Lineal nature of symbols can be exploited to define a suitable representation of models and the set of deformations to be applied to them. Matching, however, is done over the original binary image to avoid losing relevant features during vectorization. We have applied this method to hand-written architectural drawings and experimental results demonstrate that symbols with high distortions from ideal shape can be accurately identified.
