Title Uso de recursos virtuales en Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos. Una experiencia en la asignatura de Graficos por Computador Type Miscellaneous
Year 2008 Publication Octava Jornada sobre Aprendizaje Cooperativo Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 79–88

Abstract The recognition of symbols in graphic documents is an intensive research activity in the community of pattern recognition and document analysis. A key issue in the interpretation of maps, engineering drawings, diagrams, etc. is the recognition of domain dependent symbols according to a symbol database. In this work we first review the most outstanding symbol recognition methods from two different points of view: application domains and pattern recognition methods. In the second part of the paper, open and unaddressed problems involved in symbol recognition are described, analyzing their current state of art and discussing future research challenges. Thus, issues such as symbol representation, matching, segmentation, learning, scalability of recognition methods and performance evaluation are addressed in this work. Finally, we discuss the perspectives of symbol recognition concerning to new paradigms such as user interfaces in handheld computers or document database and WWW indexing by graphical content.

Title Laplacian Unitary Domain for Texture Morphing Type Conference Article

Abstract Deformation of expressive textures is the gateway to realistic computer synthesis of expressions. By their good mathematical properties and flexible formulation on irregular meshes, most texture mappings rely on solutions to the Laplacian in the cartesian space. In the context of facial expression morphing, this approximation can be seen from the opposite point of view by neglecting the metric. In this paper, we use the properties of the Laplacian in manifolds to present a novel approach to warping expressive facial images in order to generate a morphing between them.

Title A string-based method to recognize symbols and structural textures in architectural plans Type Conference Article
Year 1997 Publication 2nd IAPR Workshop on Graphics Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract This paper deals with the recognition of symbols and struc- tural textures in architectural plans using string matching techniques. A plan is represented by an attributed graph whose nodes represent characteristic points and whose edges represent segments. Symbols and textures can be seen as a set of regions, i.e. closed loops in the graph, with a particular arrangement. The search for a symbol involves a graph matching between the regions of a model graph and the regions of the graph representing the document. Discriminating a texture means a clus- tering of neighbouring regions of this graph. Both procedures involve a similarity measure between graph regions. A string codification is used to represent the sequence of outlining edges of a region. Thus, the simila- rity between two regions is defined in terms of the string edit distance between their boundary strings. The use of string matching allows the recognition method to work also under presence of distortion.

Title Multi-resolution DT-MRI cardiac tractography Type Conference Article
Year 2012 Publication Statistical Atlases And Computational Models Of The Heart: Imaging and Modelling Challenges Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 7746 Issue Pages 270-277

Abstract Even using objective measures from DT-MRI no consensus about myocardial architecture has been achieved so far. Streamlining provides good reconstructions at low level of detail, but falls short to give global abstract interpretations. In this paper, we present a multi-resolution methodology that is able to produce simplified representations of cardiac architecture. Our approach produces a reduced set of tracts that are representative of the main geometric features of myocardial anatomical structure. Experiments show that fiber geometry is preserved along reductions, which validates the simplified model for interpretation of cardiac architecture.

Title Segmentation and analysis of linial texture in plans Type Conference Article
Year 1997 Publication Intelligence Artificielle et Complexité. Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
Keywords Structural Texture, Voronoi, Hierarchical Clustering, String Matching.
Abstract The problem of texture segmentation and interpretation is one of the main concerns in the field of document analysis. Graphical documents often contain areas characterized by a structural texture whose recognition allows both the document understanding, and its storage in a more compact way. In this work, we focus on structural linial textures of regular repetition contained in plan documents. Starting from an atributed graph which represents the vectorized input image, we develop a method to segment textured areas and recognize their placement rules. We wish to emphasize that the searched textures do not follow a predefined pattern. Minimal closed loops of the input graph are computed, and then hierarchically clustered. In this hierarchical clustering, a distance function between two closed loops is defined in terms of their areas difference and boundary resemblance computed by a string matching procedure. Finally it is noted that, when the texture consists of isolated primitive elements, the same method can be used after computing a Voronoi Tesselation of the input graph.

Title Deformable B-Solids and Implicit Snakes for Localization and Tracking of SPAMM MRI-Data Type Conference Article
Year 1996 Publication Workshop on Mathematical Methods in Biomedical Image Analysis Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 192-201
  Keywords
Abstract To date, MRI-SPAMM data from different image slices have been analyzed independently. In this paper, we propose an approach for 3D tag localization and tracking of SPAMM data by a novel deformable B-solid. The solid is defined in terms of a 3D tensor product B-spline. The isoparametric curves of the B-spline solid have special importance. These are termed implicit snakes as they deform under image forces from tag lines in different image slices. The localization and tracking of tag lines is performed under constraints of continuity and smoothness of the B-solid. The framework unifies the problems of localization, and displacement fitting and interpolation into the same procedure utilizing B-spline bases for interpolation. To track motion from boundaries and restrict image forces to the myocardium, a volumetric model is employed as a pair of coupled endocardial and epicardial B-spline surfaces. To recover deformations in the LV an energy-minimization problem is posed where both tag and ...

Abstract In this workshop a 6 years experience in Project Based Learning (PBL) in Computer Graphics, Computer Engineering course at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) is presented. We use a Moodle environment suited to manage the documentation generated in PBL. The course is organized by means of two alternative routes: a classic itinerary of lectures and test-based evaluation and another with PBL. In the PBL itinerary we explain the organization in teamgroups, homework tutoring and monitoring and evaluation guidelines for students. We provide some of the work done by students, and the results of assessment surveys carried out to students during these years. We report the evolution of our PBL itinerary in terms of, both, organization and student surveys.
The workshop aims at discussing about on the advantages and disadvantages of using these active methodologies in technical degrees such as computer engineering, in order to debate about the most suitable way of organizing PBL and assessing students learning rate.
