Abstract: Observers are faster to detect a target among a set of distracters if the targets and distracters come from different color categories. This cross-boundary advantage seems to be limited to the right visual field, which is consistent with the dominance of the left hemisphere for language processing [Gilbert et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 103, 489 (2006)]. Here we study whether a similar visual field advantage is found in the color identification task in speakers of Mandarin, a language that uses a logographic system. Forty late Mandarin-English bilinguals performed a blue-green color categorization task, in a blocked design, in their first language (L1: Mandarin) or second language (L2: English). Eleven color singletons ranging from blue to green were presented for 160 ms, randomly in the left visual field (LVF) or right visual field (RVF). Color boundary and reaction times (RTs) at the color boundary were estimated in L1 and L2, for both visual fields. We found that the color boundary did not differ between the languages; RTs at the color boundary, however, were on average more than 100 ms shorter in the English compared to the Mandarin sessions, but only when the stimuli were presented in the RVF. The finding may be explained by the script nature of the two languages: Mandarin logographic characters are analyzed visuospatially in the right hemisphere, which conceivably facilitates identification of color presented to the LVF.

Sophie Wuerger, Kaida Xiao, Chenyang Fu and Dimosthenis Karatzas. 2010. Colour-opponent mechanisms are not affected by age-related chromatic sensitivity changes. OPO, 30(5), 635–659.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to assess whether age-related chromatic sensitivity changes are associated with corresponding changes in hue perception in a large sample of colour-normal observers over a wide age range (n = 185; age range: 18-75 years). In these observers we determined both the sensitivity along the protan, deutan and tritan line; and settings for the four unique hues, from which the characteristics of the higher-order colour mechanisms can be derived. We found a significant decrease in chromatic sensitivity due to ageing, in particular along the tritan line. From the unique hue settings we derived the cone weightings associated with the colour mechanisms that are at equilibrium for the four unique hues. We found that the relative cone weightings (w(L) /w(M) and w(L) /w(S)) associated with the unique hues were independent of age. Our results are consistent with previous findings that the unique hues are rather constant with age while chromatic sensitivity declines. They also provide evidence in favour of the hypothesis that higher-order colour mechanisms are equipped with flexible cone weightings, as opposed to fixed weights. The mechanism underlying this compensation is still poorly understood.

Abstract: Effective information retrieval on handwritten document images has always been
a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a novel handwritten word spotting approach based on graph representation. The presented model comprises both topological and morphological signatures of handwriting. Skeleton-based graphs with the Shape Context labeled vertexes are established for connected components. Each word image is represented as a sequence of graphs. In order to be robust to the handwriting variations, an exhaustive merging process based on DTW alignment results introduced in the similarity measure between word images. With respect to the computation complexity, an approximate graph edit distance approach using bipartite matching is employed for graph matching. The experiments on the George Washington dataset and the marriage records from the Barcelona Cathedral dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art structural methods.

Abstract: Effective information retrieval on handwritten document images has always been a challenging task, especially historical ones. In the paper, we propose a coarse-to-fine handwritten word spotting approach based on graph representation. The presented model comprises both the topological and morphological signatures of the handwriting. Skeleton-based graphs with the Shape Context labelled vertexes are established for connected components. Each word image is represented as a sequence of graphs. Aiming at developing a practical and efficient word spotting approach for large-scale historical handwritten documents, a fast and coarse comparison is first applied to prune the regions that are not similar to the query based on the graph embedding methodology. Afterwards, the query and regions of interest are compared by graph edit distance based on the Dynamic Time Warping alignment. The proposed approach is evaluated on a public dataset containing 50 pages of historical marriage license records. The results show that the proposed approach achieves a compromise between efficiency and accuracy.

Ernest Valveny, Oriol Ramos Terrades, Joan Mas and Marçal Rusiñol. 2013. Interactive Document Retrieval and Classification. In Angel Sappa and Jordi Vitria, eds. Multimodal Interaction in Image and Video Applications. Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 17–30.
Abstract: In this chapter we describe a system for document retrieval and classification following the interactive-predictive framework. In particular, the system addresses two different scenarios of document analysis: document classification based on visual appearance and logo detection. These two classical problems of document analysis are formulated following the interactive-predictive model, taking the user interaction into account to make easier the process of annotating and labelling the documents. A system implementing this model in a real scenario is presented and analyzed. This system also takes advantage of active learning techniques to speed up the task of labelling the documents.

Fernando Vilariño, Dimosthenis Karatzas and Alberto Valcarce. 2018. Libraries as New Innovation Hubs: The Library Living Lab. 30th ISPIM Innovation Conference.
Abstract: Libraries are in deep transformation both in EU and around the world, and they are thriving within a great window of opportunity for innovation. In this paper, we show how the Library Living Lab in Barcelona participated of this changing scenario and contributed to create the Bibliolab program, where more than 200 public libraries give voice to their users in a global user-centric innovation initiative, using technology as enabling factor. The Library Living Lab is a real 4-helix implementation where Universities, Research Centers, Public Administration, Companies and the Neighbors are joint together to explore how technology transforms the cultural experience of people. This case is an example of scalability and provides reference tools for policy making, sustainability, user engage methodologies and governance. We provide specific examples of new prototypes and services that help to understand how to redefine the role of the Library as a real hub for social innovation.

Abstract: The first competition on music scores that was organized at ICDAR in 2011 awoke the interest of researchers, who participated both at staff removal and writer identification tasks. In this second edition, we focus on the staff removal task and simulate a real case scenario: old music scores. For this purpose, we have generated a new set of images using two kinds of degradations: local noise and 3D distortions. This paper describes the dataset, distortion methods, evaluation metrics, the participant's methods and the obtained results.
