Abstract Cardiac diseases are diagnosed and treated through a study of the morphology and dynamics of cardiac arteries. In- travascular Ultrasound (IVUS) imaging is of high interest to physicians since it provides both information. At the current state-of-the-art in image segmentation, a robust detection of the arterial lumen in IVUS demands manual intervention or ECG-gating. Manual intervention is a tedious and time consuming task that requires experienced observers, meanwhile ECG-gating is an acquisition technique not available in all clinical centers. We introduce a parametric algorithm that detects the arterial luminal border in in vivo sequences. The method consist in smoothing the sequences’ level surfaces under a regularized mean curvature flow that admits non-trivial steady states. The flow is based on a measure of the surface local smoothness that takes into account regularity of the surface curvature.

Abstract We propose bookworm continual learning(BCL), a flexible setting where unseen classes can be inferred via a semantic model, and the visual model can be updated continually. Thus BCL generalizes both continual learning (CL) and zero-shot learning (ZSL). We also propose the bidirectional imagination (BImag) framework to address BCL where features of both past and future classes are generated. We observe that conditioning the feature generator on attributes can actually harm the continual learning ability, and propose two variants (joint class-attribute conditioning and asymmetric generation) to alleviate this problem.

Abstract Translating conceptual knowledge into real world experiences presents a significant educational challenge. This position paper presents an approach that supports learners in moving seamlessly between conceptual learning and their application in the real world by bringing physical and virtual experiments into everyday settings. Learners are empowered in conducting these situated experiments in a variety of physical settings by leveraging state of the art mobile, augmented reality, and virtual reality technology. A blend of mobile-based multi-sensory physical experiments, augmented reality and enabling virtual environments can allow learners to bridge their conceptual learning with tangible experiences in a completely novel manner. This approach focuses on the learner by applying self-regulated personalised learning techniques, underpinned by innovative pedagogical approaches and adaptation techniques, to ensure that the needs and preferences of each learner are catered for individually.

Abstract To date, MRI-SPAMM data from different image slices have been analyzed independently. In this paper, we propose an approach for 3D tag localization and tracking of SPAMM data by a novel deformable B-solid. The solid is defined in terms of a 3D tensor product B-spline. The isoparametric curves of the B-spline solid have special importance. These are termed implicit snakes as they deform under image forces from tag lines in different image slices. The localization and tracking of tag lines is performed under constraints of continuity and smoothness of the B-solid. The framework unifies the problems of localization, and displacement fitting and interpolation into the same procedure utilizing B-spline bases for interpolation. To track motion from boundaries and restrict image forces to the myocardium, a volumetric model is employed as a pair of coupled endocardial and epicardial B-spline surfaces. To recover deformations in the LV an energy-minimization problem is posed where both tag and ...

Abstract In this paper, we propose a novel way to perform top-down semantic feedback in convolutional deep networks for efficient and accurate image parsing. We also show how to add global appearance/semantic features, which have shown to improve image parsing performance in state-of-the-art methods, and was not present in previous convolutional approaches. The proposed method is characterised by an efficient training and a sufficiently fast testing. We use the well known SIFTflow dataset to numerically show the advantages provided by our contributions, and to compare with state-of-the-art image parsing convolutional based approaches.
