Abstract: The issue of ethnic bias has proven to affect the performance of face recognition in previous works, while it still remains to be vacant in face anti-spoofing. Therefore, in order to study the ethnic bias for face anti-spoofing, we introduce the largest CASIA-SURF Cross-ethnicity Face Anti-spoofing (CeFA) dataset, covering 3 ethnicities, 3 modalities, 1,607 subjects, and 2D plus 3D attack types. Five protocols are introduced to measure the affect under varied evaluation conditions, such as cross-ethnicity, unknown spoofs or both of them. As our knowledge, CASIA-SURF CeFA is the first dataset including explicit ethnic labels in current released datasets. Then, we propose a novel multi-modal fusion method as a strong baseline to alleviate the ethnic bias, which employs a partially shared fusion strategy to learn complementary information from multiple modalities. Extensive experiments have been conducted on the proposed dataset to verify its significance and generalization capability for other existing datasets, i.e., CASIA-SURF, OULU-NPU and SiW datasets. Abstract: Non-verbal social human behavior forecasting has increasingly attracted the interest of the research community in recent years. Its direct applications to human-robot interaction and socially-aware human motion generation make it a very attractive field. In this survey, we define the behavior forecasting problem for multiple interactive agents in a generic way that aims at unifying the fields of social signals prediction and human motion forecasting, traditionally separated. We hold that both problem formulations refer to the same conceptual problem, and identify many shared fundamental challenges: future stochasticity, context awareness, history exploitation, etc. We also propose a taxonomy that comprises
methods published in the last 5 years in a very informative way and describes the current main concerns of the community with regard to this problem. In order to promote further research on this field, we also provide a summarized and friendly overview of audiovisual datasets featuring non-acted social interactions. Finally, we describe the most common metrics used in this task and their particular issues.

Abstract: In this work two databases for the Joint Challenge on Dominant and Complementary Emotion Recognition Using Micro Emotion Features and Head-Pose Estimation1 are introduced. Head pose estimation paired with and detailed emotion recognition have become very important in relation to human-computer interaction. The 3D head pose database, SASE, is a 3D database acquired with Microsoft Kinect 2 camera, including RGB and depth information of different head poses which is composed by a total of 30000 frames with annotated markers, including 32 male and 18 female subjects. For the dominant and complementary emotion database, iCVMEFED, includes 31250 images with different emotions of 115 subjects whose gender distribution is almost uniform. For each subject there are 5 samples. The emotions are composed by 7 basic emotions plus neutral, being defined as complementary and dominant pairs. The emotion associated to the images were labeled with the support of psychologists.

Abstract: We are proposing a new facial expression recognition model which introduces 30+ detailed facial expressions recognisable by any artificial intelligence interacting with a human. Throughout this research, we introduce two categories for the emotions, namely, dominant emotions and complementary emotions. In this research paper the complementary emotion is recognised by using the eye region if the dominant emotion is angry, fearful or sad, and if the dominant emotion is disgust or happiness the complementary emotion is mainly conveyed by the mouth. In order to verify the tagged dominant and complementary emotions, randomly chosen people voted for the recognised multi-emotional facial expressions. The average results of voting are showing that 73.88% of the voters agree on the correctness of the recognised multi-emotional facial expressions.

Abstract: The exploitation of cellular network data for studying human mobility has been a popular research topic in the last decade. Indeed, mobile terminals could be considered ubiquitous sensors that allow the observation of human movements on large scale without the need of relying on non-scalable techniques, such as surveys, or dedicated and expensive monitoring infrastructures. In particular, Call Detail Records (CDRs), collected by operators for billing purposes,
have been extensively employed due to their rather large availability, compared to other types of cellular data (e.g., signaling). Despite the interest aroused around this topic, the research community has generally agreed about the scarcity of information provided by CDRs: the position of mobile terminals is logged when some kind of activity (calls, SMS, data connections) occurs, which translates in a picture of mobility somehow biased by the activity degree of users.
By studying two datasets collected by a Nation-wide operator in 2014 and 2016, we show that the situation has drastically changed in terms of data volume and quality. The increase of flat data plans and the higher penetration of “
always connected” terminals have driven up the number of recorded CDRs, providing higher temporal accuracy for users’ locations.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION:
Sleep surfaces must adapt to individual somatotypic features to maintain a comfortable, convenient and healthy sleep, preventing diseases and injuries. Individually determining the most adequate rest surface can often be a complex and subjective question.
OBJECTIVES:
To design and validate an automatic multimodal somatotype determination model to automatically recommend an individually designed mattress-topper-pillow combination.
METHODS:
Design and validation of an automated prescription model for an individualised sleep system is performed through a single-image 2 D-3 D analysis and body pressure distribution, to objectively determine optimal individual sleep surfaces combining five different mattress densities, three different toppers and three cervical pillows.
RESULTS:
A final study (n = 151) and re-analysis (n = 117) defined and validated the model, showing high correlations between calculated and real data (>85% in height and body circumferences, 89.9% in weight, 80.4% in body mass index and more than 70% in morphotype categorisation).
CONCLUSIONS:
Somatotype determination model can accurately prescribe an individualised sleep solution. This can be useful for healthy people and for health centres that need to adapt sleep surfaces to people with special needs. Next steps will increase model's accuracy and analise, if this prescribed individualised sleep solution can improve sleep quantity and quality; additionally, future studies will adapt the model to mattresses with technological improvements, tailor-made production and will define interfaces for people with special needs.

Abstract: After decades of research, the real (biological) age estimation from a single face image reached maturity thanks to the availability of large public face databases and impressive accuracies achieved by recently proposed methods.
The estimation of “apparent age” is a related task concerning the age perceived by human observers. Significant advances have been also made in this new research direction with the recent Looking At People challenges. In this paper we make several contributions to age estimation research. (i) We introduce APPA-REAL, a large face image database with both real and apparent age annotations. (ii) We study the relationship between real and apparent age. (iii) We develop a residual age regression method to further improve the performance. (iv) We show that real age estimation can be successfully tackled as an apparent age estimation followed by an apparent to real age residual regression. (v) We graphically reveal the facial regions on which the CNN focuses in order to perform apparent and real age estimation tasks.

Abstract: Error Correcting Output Codes (ECOC) is a successful technique in multi-class classification, which is a core problem in Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning. A major advantage of ECOC over other methods is that the multi- class problem is decoupled into a set of binary problems that are solved independently. However, literature defines a general error-correcting capability for ECOCs without analyzing how it distributes among classes, hindering a deeper analysis of pair-wise error-correction. To address these limitations this paper proposes an Error-Correcting Factorization (ECF) method, our contribution is three fold: (I) We propose a novel representation of the error-correction capability, called the design matrix, that enables us to build an ECOC on the basis of allocating correction to pairs of classes. (II) We derive the optimal code length of an ECOC using rank properties of the design matrix. (III) ECF is formulated as a discrete optimization problem, and a relaxed solution is found using an efficient constrained block coordinate descent approach. (IV) Enabled by the flexibility introduced with the design matrix we propose to allocate the error-correction on classes that are prone to confusion. Experimental results in several databases show that when allocating the error-correction to confusable classes ECF outperforms state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract: XBadges is a research project based on the hypothesis that commercial video games (nonserious games) can train soft skills. We measure persistence, patial reasoning and risk taking before and after subjects paticipate in controlled game playing sessions.
In addition, we have developed an automatic facial expression recognition system capable of inferring their emotions while playing, allowing us to study the role of emotions in soft skills acquisition. We have used Flappy Bird, Pacman and Tetris for assessing changes in persistence, risk taking and spatial reasoning respectively.
Results show how playing Tetris significantly improves spatial reasoning and how playing Pacman significantly improves prudence in certain areas of behavior. As for emotions, they reveal that being concentrated helps to improve performance and skills acquisition. Frustration is also shown as a key element. With the results obtained we are able to glimpse multiple applications in areas which need soft skills development.

Abstract: We analyze the results of the 2017 ChaLearn Looking at People Challenge at ICCV. The challenge comprised three tracks: (1) large-scale isolated (2) continuous gesture recognition, and (3) real versus fake expressed emotions tracks. It is the second round for both gesture recognition challenges, which were held first in the context of the ICPR 2016 workshop on “multimedia challenges beyond visual analysis”. In this second round, more participants joined the competitions, and the performances considerably improved compared to the first round. Particularly, the best recognition accuracy of isolated gesture recognition has improved from 56.90% to 67.71% in the IsoGD test set, and Mean Jaccard Index (MJI) of continuous gesture recognition has improved from 0.2869 to 0.6103 in the ConGD test set. The third track is the first challenge on real versus fake expressed emotion classification, including six emotion categories, for which a novel database was introduced. The first place was shared between two teams who achieved 67.70% averaged recognition rate on the test set. The data of the three tracks, the participants' code and method descriptions are publicly available to allow researchers to keep making progress in the field.

Abstract: Future video prediction is an ill-posed Computer Vision problem that recently received much attention. Its main challenges are the high variability in video content, the propagation of errors through time, and the non-specificity of the future frames: given a sequence of past frames there is a continuous distribution of possible futures. This work introduces bijective Gated Recurrent Units, a double mapping between the input and output of a GRU layer. This allows for recurrent auto-encoders with state sharing between encoder and decoder, stratifying the sequence representation and helping to prevent capacity problems. We show how with this topology only the encoder or decoder needs to be applied for input encoding and prediction, respectively. This reduces the computational cost and avoids re-encoding the predictions when generating a sequence of frames, mitigating the propagation of errors. Furthermore, it is possible to remove layers from an already trained model, giving an insight to the role performed by each layer and making the model more explainable. We evaluate our approach on three video datasets, outperforming state of the art prediction results on MMNIST and UCF101, and obtaining competitive results on KTH with 2 and 3 times less memory usage and computational cost than the best scored approach.
