Title Video Alignment for Change Detection Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication IEEE Transactions on Image Processing Abbreviated Journal TIP
  Volume 20 Issue 7 Pages 1858-1869
  Keywords video alignment
Abstract In this work, we address the problem of aligning two video sequences. Such alignment refers to synchronization, i.e., the establishment of temporal correspondence between frames of the first and second video, followed by spatial registration of all the temporally corresponding frames. Video synchronization and alignment have been attempted before, but most often in the relatively simple cases of fixed or rigidly attached cameras and simultaneous acquisition. In addition, restrictive assumptions have been applied, including linear time correspondence or the knowledge of the complete trajectories of corresponding scene points; to some extent, these assumptions limit the practical applicability of any solutions developed. We intend to solve the more general problem of aligning video sequences recorded by independently moving cameras that follow similar trajectories, based only on the fusion of image intensity and GPS information. The novelty of our approach is to pose the synchronization as a MAP inference problem on a Bayesian network including the observations from these two sensor types, which have been proved complementary. Alignment results are presented in the context of videos recorded from vehicles driving along the same track at different times, for different road types. In addition, we explore two applications of the proposed video alignment method, both based on change detection between aligned videos. One is the detection of vehicles, which could be of use in ADAS. The other is online difference spotting videos of surveillance rounds.

Title ChaLearn Looking at People and Faces of the World: Face AnalysisWorkshop and Challenge 2016 Type Conference Article

Abstract We present the 2016 ChaLearn Looking at People and Faces of the World Challenge and Workshop, which ran three competitions on the common theme of face analysis from still images. The first one, Looking at People, addressed age estimation, while the second and third competitions, Faces of the World, addressed accessory classification and smile and gender classification, respectively. We present two crowd-sourcing methodologies used to collect manual annotations. A custom-build application was used to collect and label data about the apparent age of people (as opposed to the real age). For the Faces of the World data, the citizen-science Zooniverse platform was used. This paper summarizes the three challenges and the data used, as well as the results achieved by the participants of the competitions. Details of the ChaLearn LAP FotW competitions can be found at http://gesture.chalearn.org.

Title A Combination of Features for Symbol-Independent Writer Identification in Old Music Scores Type Journal Article
Year 2010 Publication International Journal on Document Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal IJDAR
  Volume 13 Issue 4 Pages 243-259
  Keywords
Abstract The aim of writer identification is determining the writer of a piece of handwriting from a set of writers. In this paper, we present an architecture for writer identification in old handwritten music scores. Even though an important amount of music compositions contain handwritten text, the aim of our work is to use only music notation to determine the author. The main contribution is therefore the use of features extracted from graphical alphabets. Our proposal consists in combining the identification results of two different approaches, based on line and textural features. The steps of the ensemble architecture are the following. First of all, the music sheet is preprocessed for removing the staff lines. Then, music lines and texture images are generated for computing line features and textural features. Finally, the classification results are combined for identifying the writer. The proposed method has been tested on a database of old music scores from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, achieving a recognition rate of about 92% with 20 writers.

Title The Discrete Cosine Maximum Ignorance Assumption Type Conference Article
Year 2021 Publication 29th Color and Imaging Conference Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 13-18
  Keywords
Abstract the performance of colour correction algorithms are dependent on the reflectance sets used. Sometimes, when the testing reflectance set is changed the ranking of colour correction algorithms also changes. To remove dependence on dataset we can
make assumptions about the set of all possible reflectances. In the Maximum Ignorance with Positivity (MIP) assumption we assume that all reflectances with per wavelength values between 0 and 1 are equally likely. A weakness in the MIP is that it fails to take into account the correlation of reflectance functions between
wavelengths (many of the assumed reflectances are, in reality, not possible).
In this paper, we take the view that the maximum ignorance assumption has merit but, hitherto it has been calculated with respect to the wrong coordinate basis. Here, we propose the Discrete Cosine Maximum Ignorance assumption (DCMI), where
all reflectances that have coordinates between max and min bounds in the Discrete Cosine Basis coordinate system are equally likely.
Here, the correlation between wavelengths is encoded and this results in the set of all plausible reflectances ’looking like’ typical reflectances that occur in nature. This said the DCMI model is also a superset of all measured reflectance sets.
Experiments show that, in colour correction, adopting the DCMI results in similar colour correction performance as using a particular reflectance set.
