Abstract |
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune, systemic, inflammatory disorder that mainly af- fects bone joints. While there is no cure for this disease, continuous advances on palliative treatments require frequent verification of patient’s illness evolution. Such evolution is mea- sured through several available semi-quantitative methods that require evaluation of hand and foot X-ray images. Accurate assessment is a time consuming task that requires highly trained personnel. This hinders a generalized use in clinical practice for early diagnose and disease follow-up. In the context of the automatization of such evaluation methods we present a method for detection and characterization of finger joints in hand radiography images. Several measures for assessing the reduction of joint space width are proposed. We compare for the first time such measures to the Van der Heijde score, the gold standard method for rheumatoid arthritis assessment. The proposed method outperforms existing strategies with a detection rate above 95%. Our comparison to Van der Heijde index shows a promising correlation that encourages further research. |

Abstract |
Image registration has been for many years the gold standard method to bring two images into correspondence. It has been used extensively in the eld of medical imaging in order to put images of dierent patients into a common overlapping spatial position. However, medical image registration is a slow, iterative optimization process, where many variables and prone to fall into the pit traps local minima.
A coordinate system parameterizing the interior of organs is a powerful tool for a systematic localization of injured tissue. If the same coordinate values are assigned to specic anatomical sites, parameterizations ensure integration of data across different medical image modalities. Harmonic mappings have been used to produce parametric meshes over the surface of anatomical shapes, given their ability to set values at specic locations through boundary conditions. However, most of the existing implementations in medical imaging restrict to either anatomical surfaces, or the depth coordinate with boundary conditions is given at discrete sites of limited geometric diversity.
The medial surface of the shape can be used to provide a continuous basis for the denition of a depth coordinate. However, given that dierent methods for generation of medial surfaces generate dierent manifolds, not all of them are equally suited to be the basis of radial coordinate for a parameterization. It would be desirable that the medial surface will be smooth, and robust to surface shape noise, with low number of spurious branches or surfaces.
In this thesis we present methods for computation of smooth medial manifolds and apply them to the generation of for anatomical volumetric parameterization that extends current harmonic parameterizations to the interior anatomy using information provided by the volume medial surface. This reference system sets a solid base for creating anatomical models of the anatomical shapes, and allows comparing several patients in a common framework of reference. |

Abstract |
Human factors cause most driving accidents; this is why nowadays is common to hear about autonomous driving as an alternative. Autonomous driving will not only increase safety, but also will develop a system of cooperative self-driving cars that will reduce pollution and congestion. Furthermore, it will provide more freedom to handicapped people, elderly or kids.
Autonomous Driving requires perceiving and understanding the vehicle environment (e.g., road, traffic signs, pedestrians, vehicles) using sensors (e.g., cameras, lidars, sonars, and radars), selflocalization (requiring GPS, inertial sensors and visual localization in precise maps), controlling the vehicle and planning the routes. These algorithms require high computation capability, and thanks to NVIDIA GPU acceleration this starts to become feasible.
NVIDIA® is developing a new platform for boosting the Autonomous Driving capabilities that is able of managing the vehicle via CAN-Bus: the Drive™ PX. It has 8 ARM cores with dual accelerated Tegra® X1 chips. It has 12 synchronized camera inputs for 360º vehicle perception, 4G and Wi-Fi capabilities allowing vehicle communications and GPS and inertial sensors inputs for self-localization.
Our research group has been selected for testing Drive™ PX. Accordingly, we are developing a Drive™ PX based autonomous car. Currently, we are porting our previous CPU based algorithms (e.g., Lane Departure Warning, Collision Warning, Automatic Cruise Control, Pedestrian Protection, or Semantic Segmentation) for running in the GPU. |

Social interactions are a very important component in peopleís lives. Social network analysis has become a common technique used to model and quantify the properties of social interactions. In this paper, we propose an integrated framework to explore the characteristics of a social network extracted from multimodal dyadic interactions. For our study, we used a set of videos belonging to New York Timesí Blogging Heads opinion blog.
The Social Network is represented as an oriented graph, whose directed links are determined by the Influence Model. The linksí weights are a measure of the ìinfluenceî a person has over the other. The states of the Influence Model encode automatically extracted audio/visual features from our videos using state-of-the art algorithms. Our results are reported in terms of accuracy of audio/visual data fusion for speaker segmentation and centrality measures used to characterize the extracted social network. |

Abstract. Text detection in urban scenes is a hard task due to the high variability of text appearance: different text fonts, changes in the point of view, or partial occlusion are just a few problems. Text detection can be specially suited for georeferencing business, navigation, tourist assistance, or to help visual impaired people. In this paper, we propose a general methodology to deal with the problem of text detection in outdoor scenes. The method is based on learning spatial information of gradient based features and Census Transform images using a cascade of classifiers. The method is applied in the context of Mobile Mapping systems, where a mobile vehicle captures urban image sequences. Moreover, a cover data set is presented and tested with the new methodology. The results show high accuracy when detecting multi-linear text regions with high variability of appearance, at same time that it preserves a low false alarm rate compared to classical approaches |

Abstract |
This paper summarizes the ChaLearn Looking at People 2014 challenge data and the results obtained by the participants. The competition was split into three independent tracks: human pose recovery from RGB data, action and interaction recognition from RGB data sequences, and multi-modal gesture recognition from RGB-Depth sequences. For all the tracks, the goal was to perform user-independent recognition in sequences of continuous images using the overlapping Jaccard index as the evaluation measure. In this edition of the ChaLearn challenge, two large novel data sets were made publicly available and the Microsoft Codalab platform were used to manage the competition. Outstanding results were achieved in the three challenge tracks, with accuracy results of 0.20, 0.50, and 0.85 for pose recovery, action/interaction recognition, and multi-modal gesture recognition, respectively. |

This paper reviews the historic of ChaLearn Looking at People (LAP) events. We started in 2011 (with the release of the first Kinect device) to run challenges related to human action/activity and gesture recognition. Since then we have regularly organized events in a series of competitions covering all aspects of visual analysis of humans. So far we have organized more than 10 international challenges and events in this field. This paper reviews associated events, and introduces the ChaLearn LAP platform where public resources (including code, data and preprints of papers) related to the organized events are available. We also provide a discussion on perspectives of ChaLearn LAP activities. |

Inpainting and Denoising Challenges comprises recent efforts dealing with image and video inpainting tasks. This includes winning solutions to the ChaLearn Looking at People inpainting and denoising challenges: human pose recovery, video de-captioning and fingerprint restoration.
This volume starts with a wide review on image denoising, retracing and comparing various methods from the pioneer signal processing methods, to machine learning approaches with sparse and low-rank models, and recent deep learning architectures with autoencoders and variants. The following chapters present results from the Challenge, including three competition tasks at WCCI and ECML 2018. The top best approaches submitted by participants are described, showing interesting contributions and innovating methods. The last two chapters propose novel contributions and highlight new applications that benefit from image/video inpainting. |

Abstract |
This volume presents the results of the Neural Information Processing Systems Competition track at the 2018 NeurIPS conference. The competition follows the same format as the 2017 competition track for NIPS. Out of 21 submitted proposals, eight competition proposals were selected, spanning the area of Robotics, Health, Computer Vision, Natural Language Processing, Systems and Physics. Competitions have become an integral part of advancing state-of-the-art in artificial intelligence (AI). They exhibit one important difference to benchmarks: Competitions test a system end-to-end rather than evaluating only a single component; they assess the practicability of an algorithmic solution in addition to assessing feasibility. |

Abstract |
Dominance is referred to the level of influence a person has in a conversation. Dominance is an important research area in social psychology, but the problem of its automatic estimation is a very recent topic in the contexts of social and wearable computing. In this paper, we focus on dominance detection from visual cues. We estimate the correlation among observers by categorizing the dominant people in a set of face-to-face conversations. Different dominance indicators from gestural communication are defined, manually annotated, and compared to the observers opinion. Moreover, the considered indicators are automatically extracted from video sequences and learnt by using binary classifiers. Results from the three analysis shows a high correlation and allows the categorization of dominant people in public discussion video sequences. |
