Abstract |
In many computer vision applications, vignetting is an undesirable effect which must be removed in a pre-processing step. Recently, an algorithm for image vignetting correction has been presented by means of a minimization of log-intensity entropy. This method relies on an increase of the entropy of the image when it is affected with vignetting. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to reduce image vignetting via a maximization of the fuzzy entropy of the image. Fuzzy entropy quantifies the fuzziness degree of a fuzzy set and its value is also modified by the presence of vignetting. The experimental results show that this novel algorithm outperforms in most cases the algorithm based on the minimization of log-intensity entropy both from the qualitative and the quantitative point of view. |

Abstract |
In this paper we propose a multi-modal deep learning approach to detect floods in social media posts. Social media posts normally contain some metadata and/or visual information, therefore in order to detect the floods we use this information. The model is based on a Convolutional Neural Network which extracts the visual features and a bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory network to extract the semantic features from the textual metadata. We validate the
method on images extracted from Flickr which contain both visual information and metadata and compare the results when using both, visual information only or metadata only. This work has been done in the context of the MediaEval Multimedia Satellite Task. |

Abstract |
Floods are major natural disasters which cause deaths and material damages every year. Monitoring these events is crucial in order to reduce both the affected people and the economic losses. In this work we train and test three different Deep Learning segmentation algorithms to estimate the water area from river images, and compare their performances. We discuss the implementation of a novel data chain aimed to monitor river water levels by automatically process data collected from surveillance cameras, and to give alerts in case of high increases of the water level or flooding. We also create and openly publish the first image dataset for river water segmentation. |

Abstract |
This paper proposes a novel method to optimize bandwidth usage for object detection in critical communication scenarios. We develop two operating models of active information seeking. The first model identifies promising regions in low resolution imagery and progressively requests higher resolution regions on which to perform recognition of higher semantic quality. The second model identifies promising regions in low resolution imagery while simultaneously predicting the approximate location of the object of higher semantic quality. From this general framework, we develop a car recognition system via identification of its license plate and evaluate the performance of both models on a car dataset that we introduce. Results are compared with traditional JPEG compression and demonstrate that our system saves up to one order of magnitude of bandwidth while sacrificing little in terms of recognition performance. |

Abstract |
In this paper we propose the use of incremental learning for creating and improving multivariate analysis models in the field of chemometrics of spectral data. As main advantages, our proposed incremental subspace-based learning allows creating models faster, progressively improving previously created models and sharing them between laboratories and institutions without requiring transferring or disclosing individual spectra samples. In particular, our approach allows to improve the generalization and adaptability of previously generated models with a few new spectral samples to be applicable to real-world situations. The potential of our approach is demonstrated using vegetable oil type identification based on spectroscopic data as case study. Results show how incremental models maintain the accuracy of batch learning methodologies while reducing their computational cost and handicaps. |

Abstract |
In this paper, a novel decremental subspace-based learning method called Decremental Generalized Discriminative Common Vectors method (DGDCV) is presented. The method makes use of the concept of decremental learning, which we introduce in the field of supervised feature extraction and classification. By efficiently removing unnecessary data and/or classes for a knowledge base, our methodology is able to update the model without recalculating the full projection or accessing to the previously processed training data, while retaining the previously acquired knowledge. The proposed method has been validated in 6 standard face recognition datasets, showing a considerable computational gain without compromising the accuracy of the model. |

Abstract |
Characterization of carotid plaque composition, more specifically the amount of lipid core, fibrous tissue, and calcified tissue, is an important task for the identification of plaques that are prone to rupture, and thus for early risk estimation of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events. Due to its low costs and wide availability, carotid ultrasound has the potential to become the modality of choice for plaque characterization in clinical practice. However, its significant image noise, coupled with the small size of the plaques and their complex appearance, makes it difficult for automated techniques to discriminate between the different plaque constituents. In this paper, we propose to address this challenging problem by exploiting the unique capabilities of the emerging deep learning framework. More specifically, and unlike existing works which require a priori definition of specific imaging features or thresholding values, we propose to build a convolutional neural network (CNN) that will automatically extract from the images the information that is optimal for the identification of the different plaque constituents. We used approximately 90 000 patches extracted from a database of images and corresponding expert plaque characterizations to train and to validate the proposed CNN. The results of cross-validation experiments show a correlation of about 0.90 with the clinical assessment for the estimation of lipid core, fibrous cap, and calcified tissue areas, indicating the potential of deep learning for the challenging task of automatic characterization of plaque composition in carotid ultrasound. |

Abstract |
We analyze the results of the 2017 ChaLearn Looking at People Challenge at ICCV. The challenge comprised three tracks: (1) large-scale isolated (2) continuous gesture recognition, and (3) real versus fake expressed emotions tracks. It is the second round for both gesture recognition challenges, which were held first in the context of the ICPR 2016 workshop on “multimedia challenges beyond visual analysis”. In this second round, more participants joined the competitions, and the performances considerably improved compared to the first round. Particularly, the best recognition accuracy of isolated gesture recognition has improved from 56.90% to 67.71% in the IsoGD test set, and Mean Jaccard Index (MJI) of continuous gesture recognition has improved from 0.2869 to 0.6103 in the ConGD test set. The third track is the first challenge on real versus fake expressed emotion classification, including six emotion categories, for which a novel database was introduced. The first place was shared between two teams who achieved 67.70% averaged recognition rate on the test set. The data of the three tracks, the participants' code and method descriptions are publicly available to allow researchers to keep making progress in the field. |

Abstract |
Person re-identification has received special attentionby the human analysis community in the last few years. To address the challenges in this field, many researchers haveproposed different strategies, which basically exploit eithercross-view invariant features or cross-view robust metrics. Inthis work we propose to combine different feature representationsthrough ranking aggregation. Spatial information, whichpotentially benefits the person matching, is represented usinga 2D body model, from which color and texture informationare extracted and combined. We also consider contextualinformation (background and foreground data), automaticallyextracted via Deep Decompositional Network, and the usage ofConvolutional Neural Network (CNN) features. To describe thematching between images we use the polynomial feature map, also taking into account local and global information. Finally, the Stuart ranking aggregation method is employed to combinecomplementary ranking lists obtained from different featurerepresentations. Experimental results demonstrated that weimprove the state-of-the-art on VIPeR and PRID450s datasets, achieving 58.77% and 71.56% on top-1 rank recognitionrate, respectively, as well as obtaining competitive results onCUHK01 dataset. |

Abstract |
Handwriting recognition consists in obtaining the transcription of a text image. Recent word spotting methods based on attribute embedding have shown good performance when recognizing words. However, they are holistic methods in the sense that they recognize the word as a whole (i.e. they find the closest word in the lexicon to the word image). Consequently,
these kinds of approaches are not able to deal with out of vocabulary words, which are common in historical manuscripts. Also, they cannot be extended to recognize text lines. In order to address these issues, in this paper we propose a handwriting recognition method that adapts the attribute embedding to sequence learning. Concretely, the method learns the attribute embedding of patches of word images with a convolutional neural network. Then, these embeddings are presented as a sequence to a recurrent neural network that produces the transcription. We obtain promising results even without the use of any kind of dictionary or language model |

Abstract |
Colonoscopy is the gold standard for colon cancer screening though still some polyps are missed, thus preventing early disease detection and treatment. Several computational systems have been proposed to assist polyp detection during colonoscopy but so far without consistent evaluation. The lack
of publicly available annotated databases has made it difficult to compare methods and to assess if they achieve performance levels acceptable for clinical use. The Automatic Polyp Detection subchallenge, conducted as part of the Endoscopic Vision Challenge (http://endovis.grand-challenge.org) at the international conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted
Intervention (MICCAI) in 2015, was an effort to address this need. In this paper, we report the results of this comparative evaluation of polyp detection methods, as well as describe additional experiments to further explore differences between methods. We define performance metrics and provide evaluation databases that allow comparison of multiple methodologies. Results show that convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are the state of the art. Nevertheless it is also demonstrated that combining different methodologies can lead to an improved overall performance. |
