Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE:
Fast intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) video processing is required for calcium volume computation during the planning phase of percutaneous coronary interventional (PCI) procedures. Nonlinear multiresolution techniques are generally applied to improve the processing time by down-sampling the video frames.
METHODS:
This paper presents four different segmentation methods for calcium volume measurement, namely Threshold-based, Fuzzy c-Means (FCM), K-means, and Hidden Markov Random Field (HMRF) embedded with five different kinds of multiresolution techniques (bilinear, bicubic, wavelet, Lanczos, and Gaussian pyramid). This leads to 20 different kinds of combinations. IVUS image data sets consisting of 38,760 IVUS frames taken from 19 patients were collected using 40 MHz IVUS catheter (Atlantis® SR Pro, Boston Scientific®, pullback speed of 0.5 mm/sec.). The performance of these 20 systems is compared with and without multiresolution using the following metrics: (a) computational time; (b) calcium volume; (c) image quality degradation ratio; and (d) quality assessment ratio.
RESULTS:
Among the four segmentation methods embedded with five kinds of multiresolution techniques, FCM segmentation combined with wavelet-based multiresolution gave the best performance. FCM and wavelet experienced the highest percentage mean improvement in computational time of 77.15% and 74.07%, respectively. Wavelet interpolation experiences the highest mean precision-of-merit (PoM) of 94.06 ± 3.64% and 81.34 ± 16.29% as compared to other multiresolution techniques for volume level and frame level respectively. Wavelet multiresolution technique also experiences the highest Jaccard Index and Dice Similarity of 0.7 and 0.8, respectively. Multiresolution is a nonlinear operation which introduces bias and thus degrades the image. The proposed system also provides a bias correction approach to enrich the system, giving a better mean calcium volume similarity for all the multiresolution-based segmentation methods. After including the bias correction, bicubic interpolation gives the largest increase in mean calcium volume similarity of 4.13% compared to the rest of the multiresolution techniques. The system is automated and can be adapted in clinical settings.
CONCLUSIONS:
We demonstrated the time improvement in calcium volume computation without compromising the quality of IVUS image. Among the 20 different combinations of multiresolution with calcium volume segmentation methods, the FCM embedded with wavelet-based multiresolution gave the best performance.

Abstract: This paper deals with Query By String word spotting in scene images. A hierarchical text segmentation algorithm based on text specific selective search is used to find text regions. These regions are indexed per character n-grams present in the text region. An attribute representation based on Pyramidal Histogram of Characters (PHOC) is used to compare text regions with the query text. For generation of the index a similar attribute space based Pyramidal Histogram of character n-grams is used. These attribute models are learned using linear SVMs over the Fisher Vector [1] representation of the images along with the PHOC labels of the corresponding strings.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a segmentation-free approach to word spotting. Word images are first encoded into feature vectors using Fisher Vector. Then, these feature vectors are used together with pyramidal histogram of characters labels (PHOC) to learn SVM-based attribute models. Documents are represented by these PHOC based word attributes. To efficiently compute the word attributes over a sliding window, we propose to use an integral image representation of the document using a simplified version of the attribute model. Finally we re-rank the top word candidates using the more discriminative full version of the word attributes. We show state-of-the-art results for segmentation-free query-by-example word spotting in single-writer and multi-writer standard datasets.

In this paper we propose an approach to lexicon-free recognition of text in scene images. Our approach relies on a LSTM-based soft visual attention model learned from convolutional features. A set of feature vectors are derived from an intermediate convolutional layer corresponding to different areas of the image. This permits encoding of spatial information into the image representation. In this way, the framework is able to learn how to selectively focus on different parts of the image. At every time step the recognizer emits one character using a weighted combination of the convolutional feature vectors according to the learned attention model. Training can be done end-to-end using only word level annotations. In addition, we show that modifying the beam search algorithm by integrating an explicit language model leads to significantly better recognition results. We validate the performance of our approach on standard SVT and ICDAR'03 scene text datasets, showing state-of-the-art performance in unconstrained text recognition.

Abstract: Neural image compression (NIC) is a new coding paradigm where coding capabilities are captured by deep models learned from data. This data-driven nature enables new potential functionalities. In this paper, we study the adaptability of codecs to custom domains of interest. We show that NIC codecs are transferable and that they can be adapted with relatively few target domain images. However, naive adaptation interferes with the solution optimized for the original source domain, resulting in forgetting the original coding capabilities in that domain, and may even break the compatibility with previously encoded bitstreams. Addressing these problems, we propose Codec Adaptation without Forgetting (CAwF), a framework that can avoid these problems by adding a small amount of custom parameters, where the source codec remains embedded and unchanged during the adaptation process. Experiments demonstrate its effectiveness and provide useful insights on the characteristics of catastrophic interference in NIC.

Abstract: Document layout analysis is a known problem to the documents research community and has been vastly explored yielding a multitude of solutions ranging from text mining, and recognition to graph-based representation, visual feature extraction, etc. However, most of the existing works have ignored the crucial fact regarding the scarcity of labeled data. With growing internet connectivity to personal life, an enormous amount of documents had been available in the public domain and thus making data annotation a tedious task. We address this challenge using self-supervision and unlike, the few existing self-supervised document segmentation approaches which use text mining and textual labels, we use a complete vision-based approach in pre-training without any ground-truth label or its derivative. Instead, we generate pseudo-layouts from the document images to pre-train an image encoder to learn the document object representation and localization in a self-supervised framework before fine-tuning it with an object detection model. We show that our pipeline sets a new benchmark in this context and performs at par with the existing methods and the supervised counterparts, if not outperforms. Abstract: This paper provides an overview of the DocILE 2023 Competition, its tasks, participant submissions, the competition results and possible future research directions. This first edition of the competition focused on two Information Extraction tasks, Key Information Localization and Extraction (KILE) and Line Item Recognition (LIR). Both of these tasks require detection of pre-defined categories of information in business documents. The second task additionally requires correctly grouping the information into tuples, capturing the structure laid out in the document. The competition used the recently published DocILE dataset and benchmark that stays open to new submissions. The diversity of the participant solutions indicates the potential of the dataset as the submissions included pure Computer Vision, pure Natural Language Processing, as well as multi-modal solutions and utilized all of the parts of the dataset, including the annotated, synthetic and unlabeled subsets.

Abstract: We live in a society where the large majority of the population has a camera-equipped smartphone. In addition, hard drives and cloud storage are getting cheaper and cheaper, leading to a tremendous growth in stored personal photos. Unlike photo collections captured by a digital camera, which typically are pre-processed by the user who organizes them into event-related folders, smartphone pictures are automatically stored in the cloud. As a consequence, photo collections captured by a smartphone are highly unstructured and because smartphones are ubiquitous, they present a larger variability compared to pictures captured by a digital camera. To solve the need of organizing large smartphone photo collections automatically, we propose here a new methodology for hierarchical photo organization into topics and topic-related categories. Our approach successfully estimates latent topics in the pictures by applying probabilistic Latent Semantic Analysis, and automatically assigns a name to each topic by relying on a lexical database. Topic-related categories are then estimated by using a set of topic-specific Convolutional Neuronal Networks. To validate our approach, we ensemble and make public a large dataset of more than 8,000 smartphone pictures from 10 persons. Experimental results demonstrate better user satisfaction with respect to state of the art solutions in terms of organization.
