Abstract |
We consider a quantum system that is being continuously monitored, giving rise to a measurement signal. From such a stream of data, information needs to be inferred about the underlying system's dynamics. Here we focus on hypothesis testing problems and put forward the usage of sequential strategies where the signal is analyzed in real time, allowing the experiment to be concluded as soon as the underlying hypothesis can be identified with a certified prescribed success probability. We analyze the performance of sequential tests by studying the stopping-time behavior, showing a considerable advantage over currently-used strategies based on a fixed predetermined measurement time. |

Abstract |
Abstract
Purpose:
Carotid revascularization can be associated with modifications of the vascular geometry, which may lead to complications. The changes on the vessel angulation before and after a carotid WallStent (WS) implantation are compared against 2 new dual-layer devices, CGuard (CG) and RoadSaver (RS).
Materials and Methods:
The study prospectively recruited 217 consecutive patients (112 GC, 73 WS, and 32 RS, respectively). Angiography projections were explored and the one having a higher arterial angle was selected as a basal view. After stent implantation, a stent control angiography was performed selecting the projection having the maximal angle. The same procedure is followed in all the 3 stent types to guarantee comparable conditions. The angulation changes on the stented segments were quantified from both angiographies. The statistical analysis quantitatively compared the pre-and post-angles for the 3 stent types. The results are qualitatively illustrated using boxplots. Finally, the relation between pre- and post-angles measurements is analyzed using linear regression.
Results:
For CG, no statistical difference in the axial vessel geometry between the basal and postprocedural angles was found. For WS and RS, statistical difference was found between pre- and post-angles. The regression analysis shows that CG induces lower changes from the original curvature with respect to WS and RS.
Conclusion:
Based on our results, CG determines minor changes over the basal morphology than WS and RS stents. Hence, CG respects better the native vessel anatomy than the other stents.
Level of Evidence: Level 4, Case Series. |

Abstract |
A novel technique for visualizing multispectral images is proposed. Inspired by how prisms work, our method spreads spectral information over a chromatic noise pattern. This is accomplished by populating the pattern with pixels representing each measurement band at a count proportional to its measured intensity. The method is advantageous because it allows for lightweight encoding and visualization of spectral information
while maintaining the color appearance of the stimulus. A four alternative forced choice (4AFC) experiment was conducted to validate the method’s information-carrying capacity in displaying metameric stimuli of varying colors and spectral basis functions. The scores ranged from 100% to 20% (less than chance given the 4AFC task), with many conditions falling somewhere in between at statistically significant intervals. Using this data, color and texture difference metrics can be evaluated and optimized to predict the legibility of the visualization technique. |

Abstract |
Visual content is increasingly being processed by machines for various automated content analysis tasks instead of being consumed by humans. Despite the existence of several compression methods tailored for machine tasks, few consider real-world scenarios with multiple tasks. In this paper, we aim to address this gap by proposing a task-switchable pre-processor that optimizes input images specifically for machine consumption prior to encoding by an off-the-shelf codec designed for human consumption. The proposed task-switchable pre-processor adeptly maintains relevant semantic information based on the specific characteristics of different downstream tasks, while effectively suppressing irrelevant information to reduce bitrate. To enhance the processing of semantic information for diverse tasks, we leverage pre-extracted semantic features to modulate the pixel-to-pixel mapping within the pre-processor. By switching between different modulations, multiple tasks can be seamlessly incorporated into the system. Extensive experiments demonstrate the practicality and simplicity of our approach. It significantly reduces the number of parameters required for handling multiple tasks while still delivering impressive performance. Our method showcases the potential to achieve efficient and effective compression for machine vision tasks, supporting the evolving demands of real-world applications. |

Abstract |
Improving images captured under low-light conditions has become an important topic in computational color imaging, as it has a wide range of applications. Most current methods are either based on handcrafted features or on end-to-end training of deep neural networks that mostly focus on minimizing some distortion metric —such as PSNR or SSIM— on a set of training images. However, the minimization of distortion metrics does not mean that the results are optimal in terms of perception (i.e. perceptual quality). As an example, the perception-distortion trade-off states that, close to the optimal results, improving distortion results in worsening perception. This means that current low-light image enhancement methods —that focus on distortion minimization— cannot be optimal in the sense of obtaining a good image in terms of perception errors. In this paper, we propose a post-processing approach in which, given the original low-light image and the result of a specific method, we are able to obtain a result that resembles as much as possible that of the original method, but, at the same time, giving an improvement in the perception of the final image. More in detail, our method follows the hypothesis that in order to minimally modify the perception of an input image, any modification should be a combination of a local change in the shading across a scene and a global change in illumination color. We demonstrate the ability of our method quantitatively using perceptual blind image metrics such as BRISQUE, NIQE, or UNIQUE, and through user preference tests. |

Abstract |
Landmark detection is a fundamental task aiming at identifying specific landmarks that serve as representations of distinct object features within an image. However, the present landmark detection algorithms often adopt complex architectures and are trained in a supervised manner using large datasets to achieve satisfactory performance. When faced with limited data, these algorithms tend to experience a notable decline in accuracy. To address these drawbacks, we propose a novel diffusion-based network (DBN) for unsupervised landmark detection, which leverages the generation ability of the diffusion models to detect the landmark locations. In particular, we introduce a dual-branch encoder (DualE) for extracting visual features and predicting landmarks. Additionally, we lighten the decoder structure for faster inference, referred to as LightD. By this means, we avoid relying on extensive data comparison and the necessity of designing complex architectures as in previous methods. Experiments on CelebA, AFLW, 300W and Deepfashion benchmarks have shown that DBN performs state-of-the-art compared to the existing methods. Furthermore, DBN shows robustness even when faced with limited data cases. |

Abstract |
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has greatly benefited from computer vision. Recently, deep learning approaches are widely used to accurately estimate the state of deterioration of infrastructure. In this work, we focus on the problem of bridge surface structural damage detection, such as delamination and rebar exposure. It is well known that the quality of a deep learning model is highly dependent on the quality of the training dataset. Bridge damage detection, our application domain, has the following main challenges: (i) labeling the damages requires knowledgeable civil engineering professionals, which makes it difficult to collect a large annotated dataset; (ii) the damage area could be very small, whereas the background area is large, which creates an unbalanced training environment; (iii) due to the difficulty to exactly determine the extension of the damage, there is often a variation among different labelers who perform pixel-wise labeling. In this paper, we propose a novel model for bridge structural damage detection to address the first two challenges. This paper follows the idea of an atrous spatial pyramid pooling (ASPP) module that is designed as a novel network for bridge damage detection. Further, we introduce the weight balanced Intersection over Union (IoU) loss function to achieve accurate segmentation on a highly unbalanced small dataset. The experimental results show that (i) the IoU loss function improves the overall performance of damage detection, as compared to cross entropy loss or focal loss, and (ii) the proposed model has a better ability to detect a minority class than other light segmentation networks. |

Abstract |
A crucial part of image classification consists of capturing non-local spatial semantics of image content. This paper describes the multi-scale hybrid vision transformer (MSHViT), an extension of the classical convolutional neural network (CNN) backbone, for multi-label sewer defect classification. To better model spatial semantics in the images, features are aggregated at different scales non-locally through the use of a lightweight vision transformer, and a smaller set of tokens was produced through a novel Sinkhorn clustering-based tokenizer using distinct cluster centers. The proposed MSHViT and Sinkhorn tokenizer were evaluated on the Sewer-ML multi-label sewer defect classification dataset, showing consistent performance improvements of up to 2.53 percentage points. |

Abstract |
Recently, deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have provided outstanding performance in single image super-resolution (SISR). Despite their remarkable performance, the lack of high-frequency information in the recovered images remains a core problem. Moreover, as the networks increase in depth and width, deep CNN-based SR methods are faced with the challenge of computational complexity in practice. A promising and under-explored solution is to adapt the amount of compute based on the different frequency bands of the input. To this end, we present a novel Frequency-based Enhancement Block (FEB) which explicitly enhances the information of high frequencies while forwarding low-frequencies to the output. In particular, this block efficiently decomposes features into low- and high-frequency and assigns more computation to high-frequency ones. Thus, it can help the network generate more discriminative representations by explicitly recovering finer details. Our FEB design is simple and generic and can be used as a direct replacement of commonly used SR blocks with no need to change network architectures. We experimentally show that when replacing SR blocks with FEB we consistently improve the reconstruction error, while reducing the number of parameters in the model. Moreover, we propose a lightweight SR model — Frequency-based Enhancement Network (FENet) — based on FEB that matches the performance of larger models. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposal performs favorably against the state-of-the-art SR algorithms in terms of visual quality, memory footprint, and inference time. The code is available at https://github.com/pbehjatii/FENet |

Abstract |
In this paper, a continuous head pose estimation system is proposed to estimate yaw and pitch head angles from raw facial images. Our approach is based on manifold learningbased methods, due to their promising generalization properties shown for face modelling from images. The method combines histograms of oriented gradients, generalized discriminative common vectors and continuous local regression to achieve successful performance. Our proposal was tested on multiple standard face datasets, as well as in a realistic scenario. Results show a considerable performance improvement and a higher consistence of our model in comparison with other state-of-art methods, with angular errors varying between 9 and 17 degrees. |

Abstract |
Emotion recognition has a key role in affective computing. Recently, fine-grained emotion analysis, such as compound facial expression of emotions, has attracted high interest of researchers working on affective computing. A compound facial emotion includes dominant and complementary emotions (e.g., happily-disgusted and sadly-fearful), which is more detailed than the seven classical facial emotions (e.g., happy, disgust, and so on). Current studies on compound emotions are limited to use data sets with limited number of categories and unbalanced data distributions, with labels obtained automatically by machine learning-based algorithms which could lead to inaccuracies. To address these problems, we released the iCV-MEFED data set, which includes 50 classes of compound emotions and labels assessed by psychologists. The task is challenging due to high similarities of compound facial emotions from different categories. In addition, we have organized a challenge based on the proposed iCV-MEFED data set, held at FG workshop 2017. In this paper, we analyze the top three winner methods and perform further detailed experiments on the proposed data set. Experiments indicate that pairs of compound emotion (e.g., surprisingly-happy vs happily-surprised) are more difficult to be recognized if compared with the seven basic emotions. However, we hope the proposed data set can help to pave the way for further research on compound facial emotion recognition. |

Abstract |
Wearable sensors (e.g., lifelogging cameras) represent very useful tools to monitor people's daily habits and lifestyle. Wearable cameras are able to continuously capture different moments of the day of their wearers, their environment, and interactions with objects, people, and places reflecting their personal lifestyle. The food places where people eat, drink, and buy food, such as restaurants, bars, and supermarkets, can directly affect their daily dietary intake and behavior. Consequently, developing an automated monitoring system based on analyzing a person's food habits from daily recorded egocentric photo-streams of the food places can provide valuable means for people to improve their eating habits. This can be done by generating a detailed report of the time spent in specific food places by classifying the captured food place images to different groups. In this paper, we propose a self-attention mechanism with multi-scale atrous convolutional networks to generate discriminative features from image streams to recognize a predetermined set of food place categories. We apply our model on an egocentric food place dataset called “EgoFoodPlaces” that comprises of 43 392 images captured by 16 individuals using a lifelogging camera. The proposed model achieved an overall classification accuracy of 80% on the “EgoFoodPlaces” dataset, respectively, outperforming the baseline methods, such as VGG16, ResNet50, and InceptionV3. |

Abstract |
Recent progress of self-supervised visual representation learning has achieved remarkable success on many challenging computer vision benchmarks. However, whether these techniques can be used for domain adaptation has not been explored. In this work, we propose a generic method for self-supervised domain adaptation, using object recognition and semantic segmentation of urban scenes as use cases. Focusing on simple pretext/auxiliary tasks (e.g. image rotation prediction), we assess different learning strategies to improve domain adaptation effectiveness by self-supervision. Additionally, we propose two complementary strategies to further boost the domain adaptation accuracy on semantic segmentation within our method, consisting of prediction layer alignment and batch normalization calibration. The experimental results show adaptation levels comparable to most studied domain adaptation methods, thus, bringing self-supervision as a new alternative for reaching domain adaptation. Abstract |
Approaches that use more than two consecutive video frames in the optical flow estimation have a long research history. However, almost all such methods utilize extra information for a pre-processing flow prediction or for a post-processing flow correction and filtering. In contrast, this paper differs from previously developed techniques. We propose a new algorithm for the likelihood function calculation (alternatively the matching cost volume) that is used in the maximum a posteriori estimation. We exploit the fact that in general, optical flow is locally constant in the sense of time and the likelihood function depends on both the previous and the future frame. Implementation of our idea increases the robustness of optical flow estimation. As a result, our method outperforms 9% over the DCFlow technique, which we use as prototype for our CNN based computation architecture, on the most challenging MPI-Sintel dataset for the non-occluded mask metric. Furthermore, our approach considerably increases the accuracy of the flow estimation for the matching cost processing, consequently outperforming the original DCFlow algorithm results up to 50% in occluded regions and up to 9% in non-occluded regions on the MPI-Sintel dataset. The experimental section shows that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-arts results especially on the MPI-Sintel dataset. |
