Title (down) Automatic Segmentation of Artery Wall in Coronary IVUS Images: a Probabilistic Approach Type Conference Article
Year 2000 Publication Proceedings of CIC’2000 Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract Intravascular ultrasound images represent a unique tool to analyze the morphology of arteries and vessels (plaques, restenosis, etc). The poor quality of these images makes unsupervised segmentation based on traditional segmentation algorithms (such as edge or ridge/valley detection) fail to achieve the expected results. In this paper we present a probabilistic flexible template to separate different regions in the image. In particular, we use elliptic templates to model and detect the shape of the vessel inner wall in IVUS images. We present the results of successful segmentation obtained from patients undergoing stent treatment. A physician team has validated these results.

Title (down) Automatic adventitia segmentation in IntraVascular UltraSound images Type Report
Year 2005 Publication CVC Technical Report Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue 85 Pages
  Keywords
Abstract A usual tool in cardiac disease diagnosis is vessel plaque assessment by analysis of IVUS sequences. Manual detection of lumen-intima, intima-media and media-adventitia vessel borders is the main activity of physicians in the process of plaque quantification. Large variety in vessel border descriptors, as well as, shades, artifacts and blurred response due to ultrasound physical properties troubles automated media-adventitia segmentation. This experimental work presents a solution to such a complex problem. The process blends advanced anisotropic filtering operators and statistic classification techniques, achieving an efficient vessel border modelling strategy. First of all, we introduce the theoretic base of the method. After that, we show the steps of the algorithm, validating the method with statistics that show that the media-adventitia border detection achieves an accuracy in the range of inter-observer variability regardless of plaque nature, vessel geometry and incomplete vessel borders. Finally, we present a little Matlab application to the automatic media-adventitia border.

Title (down) Assessing Artery Motion Compensation in IVUS Type Book Chapter
Year 2007 Publication Computer Analysis Of Images And Patterns Abbreviated Journal LNCS
  Volume 4673 Issue Pages 213-220
Keywords validation standards; quality measures; IVUS motion compensation; conservation laws; Fourier development
Abstract Cardiac dynamics suppression is a main issue for visual improvement and computation of tissue mechanical properties in IntraVascular UltraSound (IVUS). Although in recent times several motion compensation techniques have arisen, there is a lack of objective evaluation of motion reduction in in vivo pullbacks. We consider that the assessment protocol deserves special attention for the sake of a clinical applicability as reliable as possible. Our work focuses on defining a quality measure and a validation protocol assessing IVUS motion compensation. On the grounds of continuum mechanics laws we introduce a novel score measuring motion reduction in in vivo sequences. Synthetic experiments validate the proposed score as measure of motion parameters accuracy; while results in in vivo pullbacks show its reliability in clinical cases.

Title (down) Assessing agonist efficacy in an uncertain Em world Type Conference Article
Year 2012 Publication 40th Keystone Symposia on mollecular and celular biology Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 79
  Keywords
Abstract The operational model of agonism has been widely used for the analysis of agonist action since its formulation in 1983. The model includes the Em parameter, which is defined as the maximum response of the system. The methods for Em estimation provide Em values not significantly higher than the maximum responses achieved by full agonists. However, it has been found that that some classes of compounds as, for instance, superagonists and positive allosteric modulators can increase the full agonist maximum response, implying upper limits for Em and thereby posing doubts on the validity of Em estimates. Because of the correlation between Em and operational efficacy, τ, wrong Em estimates will yield wrong τ estimates.
In this presentation, the operational model of agonism and various methods for the simulation of allosteric modulation will be analyzed. Alternatives for curve fitting will be presented and discussed.

Abstract In this workshop a 6 years experience in Project Based Learning (PBL) in Computer Graphics, Computer Engineering course at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) is presented. We use a Moodle environment suited to manage the documentation generated in PBL. The course is organized by means of two alternative routes: a classic itinerary of lectures and test-based evaluation and another with PBL. In the PBL itinerary we explain the organization in teamgroups, homework tutoring and monitoring and evaluation guidelines for students. We provide some of the work done by students, and the results of assessment surveys carried out to students during these years. We report the evolution of our PBL itinerary in terms of, both, organization and student surveys.
The workshop aims at discussing about on the advantages and disadvantages of using these active methodologies in technical degrees such as computer engineering, in order to debate about the most suitable way of organizing PBL and assessing students learning rate.
