Title Evaluation of the Capabilities of Confidence Measures for Assessing Optical Flow Quality Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication ICCV Workshop on Computer Vision in Vehicle Technology: From Earth to Mars Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages (down) 624-631
  Keywords
Abstract Assessing Optical Flow (OF) quality is essential for its further use in reliable decision support systems. The absence of ground truth in such situations leads to the computation of OF Confidence Measures (CM) obtained from either input or output data. A fair comparison across the capabilities of the different CM for bounding OF error is required in order to choose the best OF-CM pair for discarding points where OF computation is not reliable. This paper presents a statistical probabilistic framework for assessing the quality of a given CM. Our quality measure is given in terms of the percentage of pixels whose OF error bound can not be determined by CM values. We also provide statistical tools for the computation of CM values that ensures a given accuracy of the flow field.

Title Positive Airway Pressure-Enhanced CT to Improve Virtual Bronchoscopic Navigation Type Journal Article
Year 2017 Publication Journal of Thoracic Oncology Abbreviated Journal JTO

Keywords Thorax CT; diagnosis; Peripheral Pulmonary Nodule
Abstract A main weakness of virtual bronchoscopic navigation (VBN) is unsuccessful segmentation of distal branches approaching peripheral pulmonary nodules (PPN). CT scan acquisition protocol is pivotal for segmentation covering the utmost periphery. We hypothesize that application of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) during CT acquisition could improve visualization and segmentation of peripheral bronchi. The purpose of the present pilot study is to compare quality of segmentations under 4 CT acquisition modes: inspiration (INSP), expiration (EXP) and both with CPAP (INSP-CPAP and EXP-CPAP).

Title Detecting loss of diversity for an efficient termination of EAs Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication 15th International Symposium on Symbolic and Numeric Algorithms for Scientific Computing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages (down) 561 - 566
Keywords EA termination; EA population diversity; EA steady state
Abstract Termination of Evolutionary Algorithms (EA) at its steady state so that useless iterations are not performed is a main point for its efficient application to black-box problems. Many EA algorithms evolve while there is still diversity in their population and, thus, they could be terminated by analyzing the behavior some measures of EA population diversity. This paper presents a numeric approximation to steady states that can be used to detect the moment EA population has lost its diversity for EA termination. Our condition has been applied to 3 EA paradigms based on diversity and a selection of functions
covering the properties most relevant for EA convergence.
Experiments show that our condition works regardless of the search space dimension and function landscape.

Title On the nature of 2D crystal unbending Type Journal Article
Year 2006 Publication Journal of Structural Biology Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 156 Issue 3 Pages (down) 546-555
  Keywords Electron microscopy
Abstract Crystal unbending, the process that aims to recover a perfect crystal from experimental data, is one of the more important steps in electron crystallography image processing. The unbending process involves three steps: estimation of the unit cell displacements from their ideal positions, extension of the deformation field to the whole image and transformation of the image in order to recover an ideal crystal. In this work, we present a systematic analysis of the second step oriented to address two issues. First, whether the unit cells remain undistorted and only the distance between them should be changed (rigid case) or should be modified with the same deformation suffered by the whole crystal (elastic case). Second, the performance of different extension algorithms (interpolation versus approximation) is explored. Our experiments show that there is no difference between elastic and rigid cases or among the extension algorithms. This implies that the deformation fields are constant over large areas. Furthermore, our results indicate that the main source of error is the transformation of the crystal image.

Title Positive Airway Pressure to Enhance Computed Tomography Imaging for Airway Segmentation for Virtual Bronchoscopic Navigation Type Journal Article
Year 2018 Publication Respiration Abbreviated Journal RES
  Volume 96 Issue 6 Pages (down) 525-534
Keywords Multidetector computed tomography; Bronchoscopy; Continuous positive airway pressure; Image enhancement; Virtual bronchoscopic navigation
  Abstract Abstract
RATIONALE:
Virtual bronchoscopic navigation (VBN) guidance to peripheral pulmonary lesions is often limited by insufficient segmentation of the peripheral airways.

OBJECTIVES:
To test the effect of applying positive airway pressure (PAP) during CT acquisition to improve segmentation, particularly at end-expiration.

METHODS:
CT acquisitions in inspiration and expiration with 4 PAP protocols were recorded prospectively and compared to baseline inspiratory acquisitions in 20 patients. The 4 protocols explored differences between devices (flow vs. turbine), exposures (within seconds vs. 15-min) and pressure levels (10 vs. 14 cmH2O). Segmentation quality was evaluated with the number of airways and number of endpoints reached. A generalized mixed-effects model explored the estimated effect of each protocol.

MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS:
Patient characteristics and lung function did not significantly differ between protocols. Compared to baseline inspiratory acquisitions, expiratory acquisitions after 15 min of 14 cmH2O PAP segmented 1.63-fold more airways (95% CI 1.07-2.48; p = 0.018) and reached 1.34-fold more endpoints (95% CI 1.08-1.66; p = 0.004). Inspiratory acquisitions performed immediately under 10 cmH2O PAP reached 1.20-fold (95% CI 1.09-1.33; p < 0.001) more endpoints; after 15 min the increase was 1.14-fold (95% CI 1.05-1.24; p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS:
CT acquisitions with PAP segment more airways and reach more endpoints than baseline inspiratory acquisitions. The improvement is particularly evident at end-expiration after 15 min of 14 cmH2O PAP. Further studies must confirm that the improvement increases diagnostic yield when using VBN to evaluate peripheral pulmonary lesions.

Title Inferring the Performance of Medical Imaging Algorithms Type Conference Article
Year 2011 Publication 14th International Conference on Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns Abbreviated Journal
Volume 6854 Issue Pages (down) 520-528
Keywords Validation, Statistical Inference, Medical Imaging Algorithms.
Abstract Evaluation of the performance and limitations of medical imaging algorithms is essential to estimate their impact in social, economic or clinical aspects. However, validation of medical imaging techniques is a challenging task due to the variety of imaging and clinical problems involved, as well as, the difficulties for systematically extracting a reliable solely ground truth. Although specific validation protocols are reported in any medical imaging paper, there are still two major concerns: definition of standardized methodologies transversal to all problems and generalization of conclusions to the whole clinical data set.
We claim that both issues would be fully solved if we had a statistical model relating ground truth and the output of computational imaging techniques. Such a statistical model could conclude to what extent the algorithm behaves like the ground truth from the analysis of a sampling of the validation data set. We present a statistical inference framework reporting the agreement and describing the relationship of two quantities. We show its transversality by applying it to validation of two different tasks: contour segmentation and landmark correspondence.

Title An improved model of snakes for model-based segmentation Type Conference Article
Year 1995 Publication Proceedings of Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages (down) 515-520
  Keywords
Abstract The main advantage of segmentation by snakes consists in its ability to incorporate smoothness constraints on the detected shapes that can occur. Likewise, we propose to model snakes with other properties that reflect the information provided about the object of interest in a different extent. We consider different kinds of snakes, those searching for contours with a certain direction, those preserving an object’s model, those seeking for symmetry, those expanding open, etc. The availability of such a collection of snakes allows not only the more complete use of the knowledge about the segmented object, but also to solve some problems of the existing snakes. Our experiments on segmentation of facial features justify the usefulness of snakes with different properties.

Abstract This paper presents a system to understand hand drawn architectural drawings in a CAD environment. The procedure is to identify in a floor plan the building elements, stored in a library of patterns, and their spatial relationships. The vectorized input document and the patterns to recognize are represented by attributed graphs. To recognize the patterns as such, we apply a structural approach based on subgraph isomorphism techniques. In spite of their value, graph matching techniques do not recognize adequately those building elements characterized by hatching patterns, i.e. walls. Here we focus on the recognition of hatching patterns and develop a straight line Hough transform based method in order to detect the regions filled in with parallel straight fines. This allows not only to recognize filling patterns, but it actually reduces the computational load associated with the subgraph isomorphism computation. The result is that the document can be redrawn by editing all the patterns recognized

Title Terminating Evolutionary Algorithms at their Steady State Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication Computational Optimization and Applications Abbreviated Journal COA
  Volume 61 Issue 2 Pages (down) 489-515
Keywords Evolutionary algorithms; Termination condition; Steady state; Differential evolution
Abstract Assessing the reliability of termination conditions for evolutionary algorithms (EAs) is of prime importance. An erroneous or weak stop criterion can negatively affect both the computational effort and the final result. We introduce a statistical framework for assessing whether a termination condition is able to stop an EA at its steady state, so that its results can not be improved anymore. We use a regression model in order to determine the requirements ensuring that a measure derived from EA evolving population is related to the distance to the optimum in decision variable space. Our framework is analyzed across 24 benchmark test functions and two standard termination criteria based on function fitness value in objective function space and EA population decision variable space distribution for the differential evolution (DE) paradigm. Results validate our framework as a powerful tool for determining the capability of a measure for terminating EA and the results also identify the decision variable space distribution as the best-suited for accurately terminating DE in real-world applications.
