Title Myocardial torsion estimation with Tagged-MRI in the OsiriX platform Type Conference Article

Abstract Myocardial torsion (MT) plays a crucial role in the assessment of the functionality of the
left ventricle. For this purpose, the IAM group at the CVC has developed the Harmonic Phase Flow (HPF) plugin for the Osirix DICOM platform . We have validated its funcionalty on sequences acquired using different protocols and including healthy and pathological cases. Results show similar torsion trends for SPAMM acquisitions, with pathological cases introducing expected deviations from the ground truth. Finally, we provide the plugin free of charge at http://iam.cvc.uab.es

Title A medial map capturing the essential geometry of organs Type Conference Article
Year 2012 Publication ISBI Workshop on Open Source Medical Image Analysis software Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 1691 - 1694
Keywords Medial Surface Representation, Volume Reconstruction,Geometry , Image reconstruction , Liver , Manifolds , Shape , Surface morphology , Surface reconstruction
Abstract Medial representations are powerful tools for describing and parameterizing the volumetric shape of anatomical structures. Accurate computation of one pixel wide medial surfaces is mandatory. Those surfaces must represent faithfully the geometry of the volume. Although morphological methods produce excellent results in 2D, their complexity and quality drops across dimensions, due to a more complex description of pixel neighborhoods. This paper introduces a continuous operator for accurate and efficient computation of medial structures of arbitrary dimension. Our experiments show its higher performance for medical imaging applications in terms of simplicity of medial structures and capability for reconstructing the anatomical volume

Title Segmentation of Tracheal Rings in Videobronchoscopy combining Geometry and Appearance Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication Proceedings of the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 1 Issue Pages 153--161
Keywords Video-bronchoscopy, tracheal ring segmentation, trachea geometric and appearance model
Abstract Videobronchoscopy is a medical imaging technique that allows interactive navigation inside the respiratory pathways and minimal invasive interventions. Tracheal procedures are ordinary interventions that require measurement of the percentage of obstructed pathway for injury (stenosis) assessment. Visual assessment of stenosis in videobronchoscopic sequences requires high expertise of trachea anatomy and is prone to human error. Accurate detection of tracheal rings is the basis for automated estimation of the size of stenosed trachea. Processing of videobronchoscopic images acquired at the operating room is a challenging task due to the wide range of artifacts and acquisition conditions. We present a model of the geometric-appearance of tracheal rings for its detection in videobronchoscopic videos. Experiments on sequences acquired at the operating room, show a performance close to inter-observer variability

Title Finger joint characterization from X-ray images for rheymatoid arthritis assessment Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication 6th International Conference on Biomedical Electronics and Devices Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 288-292
Keywords Rheumatoid Arthritis; X-Ray; Hand Joint; Sclerosis; Sharp Van der Heijde
Abstract In this study we propose amodular systemfor automatic rheumatoid arthritis assessment which provides a joint space width measure. A hand joint model is proposed based on the accurate analysis of a X-ray finger joint image sample set. This model shows that the sclerosis and the lower bone are the main necessary features in order to perform a proper finger joint characterization. We propose sclerosis and lower bone detection methods as well as the experimental setup necessary for its performance assessment. Our characterization is used to propose and compute a joint space width score which is shown to be related to the different degrees of arthritis. This assertion is verified by comparing our proposed score with Sharp Van der Heijde score, confirming that the lower our score is the more advanced is the patient affection.

Title A Deterministic-Statistic Adventitia Detection in IVUS Images Type Conference Article
Year 2005 Publication 3rd International workshop on International Workshop on Functional Imaging and Modeling of the Heart Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 65-74
Keywords Electron microscopy; Unbending; 2D crystal; Interpolation; Approximation
Abstract Plaque analysis in IVUS planes needs accurate intima and adventitia models. Large variety in adventitia descriptors difficulties its detection and motivates using a classification strategy for selecting points on the structure. Whatever the set of descriptors used, the selection stage suffers from fake responses due to noise and uncompleted true curves. In order to smooth background noise while strengthening responses, we apply a restricted anisotropic filter that homogenizes grey levels along the image significant structures. Candidate points are extracted by means of a simple semi supervised adaptive classification of the filtered image response to edge and calcium detectors. The final model is obtained by interpolating the former line segments with an anisotropic contour closing technique based on functional extension principles.

Title MIOCARDIA: Integrating cardiac function and muscular architecture for a better diagnosis Type Conference Article
Year 2011 Publication 14th International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages

Abstract Deep understanding of myocardial structure of the heart would unravel crucial knowledge for clinical and medical procedures. The MIOCARDIA project is a multidisciplinary project in cooperation with l'Hospital de la Santa Creu i de Sant Pau, Clinica la Creu Blanca and Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The ultimate goal of this project is defining a computational model of the myocardium. The model takes into account the deep interrelation between the anatomy and the mechanics of the heart. The paper explains the workflow of the MIOCARDIA project. It also introduces a multiresolution reconstruction technique based on DT-MRI streamlining for simplified global myocardial model generation. Our reconstructions can restore the most complex myocardial structures and provides evidences of a global helical organization.
