Title Localizing Pulmonary Lesions Using Fuzzy Deep Learning Type Conference Article
Year 2019 Publication (up) 21st International Symposium on Symbolic and Numeric Algorithms for Scientific Computing Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 290-294
  Keywords
Abstract The usage of medical images is part of the clinical daily in several healthcare centers around the world. Particularly, Computer Tomography (CT) images are an important key in the early detection of suspicious lung lesions. The CT image exploration allows the detection of lung lesions before any invasive procedure (e.g. bronchoscopy, biopsy). The effective localization of lesions is performed using different image processing and computer vision techniques. Lately, the usage of deep learning models into medical imaging from detection to prediction shown that is a powerful tool for Computer-aided software. In this paper, we present an approach to localize pulmonary lung lesion using fuzzy deep learning. Our approach uses a simple convolutional neural network based using the LIDC-IDRI dataset. Each image is divided into patches associated a probability vector (fuzzy) according their belonging to anatomical structures on a CT. We showcase our approach as part of a full CAD system to exploration, planning, guiding and detection of pulmonary lesions.

Title Stable Airway Center Tracking for Bronchoscopic Navigation Type Conference Article
Year 2016 Publication (up) 28th Conference of the international Society for Medical Innovation and Technology Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract Bronchoscopists use X‐ray fluoroscopy to guide bronchoscopes to the lesion to be biopsied without any kind of incisions. Reducing exposure to X‐ray is important for both patients and doctors but alternatives like electromagnetic navigation require specific equipment and increase the cost of the clinical procedure. We propose a guiding system based on the extraction of airway centers from intra‐operative videos. Such anatomical landmarks could be
matched to the airway centerline extracted from a pre‐planned CT to indicate the best path to the lesion. We present an extraction of lumen centers
from intra‐operative videos based on tracking of maximal stable regions of energy maps.

Title SENSA: a System for Endoscopic Stenosis Assessment Type Conference Article
Year 2016 Publication (up) 28th Conference of the international Society for Medical Innovation and Technology Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages
  Keywords
Abstract Documenting the severity of a static or dynamic Central Airway Obstruction (CAO) is crucial to establish proper diagnosis and treatment, predict possible treatment effects and better follow-up the patients. The subjective visual evaluation of a stenosis during video-bronchoscopy still remains the most common way to assess a CAO in spite of a consensus among experts for a need to standardize all calculations [1].
The Computer Vision Center in cooperation with the «Hospital de Bellvitge», has developed a System for Endoscopic Stenosis Assessment (SENSA), which computes CAO directly by analyzing standard bronchoscopic data without the need of using other imaging tecnologies.

Title Decoupled External Forces in a Predictor-Corrector Segmentation Scheme for LV Contours in Tagged MR Images Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication (up) 32nd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 4805-4808
  Keywords
Abstract Computation of functional regional scores requires proper identification of LV contours. On one hand, manual segmentation is robust, but it is time consuming and requires high expertise. On the other hand, the tag pattern in TMR sequences is a problem for automatic segmentation of LV boundaries. We propose a segmentation method based on a predictorcorrector (Active Contours – Shape Models) scheme. Special stress is put in the definition of the AC external forces. First, we introduce a semantic description of the LV that discriminates myocardial tissue by using texture and motion descriptors. Second, in order to ensure convergence regardless of the initial contour, the external energy is decoupled according to the orientation of the edges in the image potential. We have validated the model in terms of error in segmented contours and accuracy of regional clinical scores.

Title A Deterministic-Statistic Adventitia Detection in IVUS Images Type Conference Article
Year 2005 Publication (up) 3rd International workshop on International Workshop on Functional Imaging and Modeling of the Heart Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 65-74

Abstract Plaque analysis in IVUS planes needs accurate intima and adventitia models. Large variety in adventitia descriptors difficulties its detection and motivates using a classification strategy for selecting points on the structure. Whatever the set of descriptors used, the selection stage suffers from fake responses due to noise and uncompleted true curves. In order to smooth background noise while strengthening responses, we apply a restricted anisotropic filter that homogenizes grey levels along the image significant structures. Candidate points are extracted by means of a simple semi supervised adaptive classification of the filtered image response to edge and calcium detectors. The final model is obtained by interpolating the former line segments with an anisotropic contour closing technique based on functional extension principles.
