Title Segmentation of Tracheal Rings in Videobronchoscopy combining Geometry and Appearance Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication Proceedings of the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 1 Issue Pages 153--161
Keywords Video-bronchoscopy, tracheal ring segmentation, trachea geometric and appearance model
Abstract Videobronchoscopy is a medical imaging technique that allows interactive navigation inside the respiratory pathways and minimal invasive interventions. Tracheal procedures are ordinary interventions that require measurement of the percentage of obstructed pathway for injury (stenosis) assessment. Visual assessment of stenosis in videobronchoscopic sequences requires high expertise of trachea anatomy and is prone to human error. Accurate detection of tracheal rings is the basis for automated estimation of the size of stenosed trachea. Processing of videobronchoscopic images acquired at the operating room is a challenging task due to the wide range of artifacts and acquisition conditions. We present a model of the geometric-appearance of tracheal rings for its detection in videobronchoscopic videos. Experiments on sequences acquired at the operating room, show a performance close to inter-observer variability

Title Automatic Non-Rigid Temporal Alignment of IVUS Sequences Type Conference Article
Year 2012 Publication 15th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 1 Issue Pages 642-650
Keywords
Abstract Clinical studies on atherosclerosis regression/progression performed by Intravascular Ultrasound analysis require the alignment of pullbacks of the same patient before and after clinical interventions. In this paper, a methodology for the automatic alignment of IVUS sequences based on the Dynamic Time Warping technique is proposed. The method is adapted to the specific IVUS alignment task by applying the non-rigid alignment technique to multidimensional morphological signals, and by introducing a sliding window approach together with a regularization term. To show the effectiveness of our method, an extensive validation is performed both on synthetic data and in-vivo IVUS sequences. The proposed method is robust to stent deployment and post dilation surgery and reaches an alignment error of approximately 0.7 mm for in-vivo data, which is comparable to the inter-observer variability.

Title Blood Vessel Characterization in Colonoscopy Images to Improve Polyp Localization Type Conference Article
Year 2013 Publication Proceedings of the International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 1 Issue Pages 162-171
Keywords Colonoscopy; Blood vessel; Linear features; Valley detection
Abstract This paper presents an approach to mitigate the contribution of blood vessels to the energy image used at different tasks of automatic colonoscopy image analysis. This goal is achieved by introducing a characterization of endoluminal scene objects which allows us to differentiate between the trace of 2-dimensional visual objects, such as vessels, and shades from 3-dimensional visual objects, such as folds. The proposed characterization is based on the influence that the object shape has in the resulting visual feature, and it leads to the development of a blood vessel attenuation algorithm. A database consisting of manually labelled masks was built in order to test the performance of our method, which shows an encouraging success in blood vessel mitigation while keeping other structures intact. Moreover, by extending our method to the only available polyp localization
algorithm tested on a public database, blood vessel mitigation proved to have a positive influence on the overall performance.

Title Active Contour Segmentation with Affine Coordinate-Based Parametrization Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication 9th International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 1 Issue Pages 5-14
Keywords Active Contours; Affine Coordinates; Mean Value Coordinates
Abstract In this paper, we present a new framework for image segmentation based on parametrized active contours. The contour and the points of the image space are parametrized using a set of reduced control points that have to form a closed polygon in two dimensional problems and a closed surface in three dimensional problems. By moving the control points, the active contour evolves. We use mean value coordinates as the parametrization tool for the interface, which allows to parametrize any point of the space, inside or outside the closed polygon
or surface. Region-based energies such as the one proposed by Chan and Vese can be easily implemented in both two and three dimensional segmentation problems. We show the usefulness of our approach with several experiments.

Title Performance Evaluation of Feature Point Descriptors in the Infrared Domain Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication 9th International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 1 Issue Pages 545-550
Keywords Infrared Imaging; Feature Point Descriptors
Abstract This paper presents a comparative evaluation of classical feature point descriptors when they are used in the long-wave infrared spectral band. Robustness to changes in rotation, scaling, blur, and additive noise are evaluated using a state of the art framework. Statistical results using an outdoor image data set are presented together with a discussion about the differences with respect to the results obtained when images from the visible spectrum are considered.

Title Laplacian Unitary Domain for Texture Morphing Type Conference Article

Abstract Deformation of expressive textures is the gateway to realistic computer synthesis of expressions. By their good mathematical properties and flexible formulation on irregular meshes, most texture mappings rely on solutions to the Laplacian in the cartesian space. In the context of facial expression morphing, this approximation can be seen from the opposite point of view by neglecting the metric. In this paper, we use the properties of the Laplacian in manifolds to present a novel approach to warping expressive facial images in order to generate a morphing between them.

Title Saliency from High-Level Semantic Image Features Type Journal
Year 2020 Publication SN Computer Science Abbreviated Journal SN
Volume (down) 1 Issue 4 Pages 1-12
Keywords
Abstract Top-down semantic information is known to play an important role in assigning saliency. Recently, large strides have been made in improving state-of-the-art semantic image understanding in the fields of object detection and semantic segmentation. Therefore, since these methods have now reached a high-level of maturity, evaluation of the impact of high-level image understanding on saliency estimation is now feasible. We propose several saliency features which are computed from object detection and semantic segmentation results. We combine these features with a standard baseline method for saliency detection to evaluate their importance. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed features derived from object detection and semantic segmentation improve saliency estimation significantly. Moreover, they show that our method obtains state-of-the-art results on (FT, ImgSal, and SOD datasets) and obtains competitive results on four other datasets (ECSSD, PASCAL-S, MSRA-B, and HKU-IS).
