Abstract Human Behavior Analysis in Uncontrolled Environments can be categorized in two main challenges: 1) Feature extraction and 2) Behavior analysis from a set of corporal language vocabulary. In this work, we present our achievements characterizing some simple behaviors from visual data on different real applications and discuss our plan for future work: low level vocabulary definition from bag-of-gesture units and high level modelling and inference of human behaviors.

Title Evidence of continuous helical structure of the cardiac ventricular anatomy assessed by diffusion tensor imaging magnetic resonance multiresolution tractography Type Journal Article
Year 2012 Publication European Radiology Abbreviated Journal ECR
Volume (down) 3 Issue 1 Pages 361-362
Keywords
Abstract Deep understanding of myocardial structure linking morphology and func- tion of the heart would unravel crucial knowledge for medical and surgical clinical procedures and studies. Diffusion tensor MRI provides a discrete measurement of the 3D arrangement of myocardial fibres by the observation of local anisotropic
diffusion of water molecules in biological tissues. In this work, we present a multi- scale visualisation technique based on DT-MRI streamlining capable of uncovering additional properties of the architectural organisation of the heart. Methods and Materials: We selected the John Hopkins University (JHU) Canine Heart Dataset, where the long axis cardiac plane is aligned with the scanner’s Z- axis. Their equipment included a 4-element passed array coil emitting a 1.5 T. For DTI acquisition, a 3D-FSE sequence is apply. We used 200 seeds for full-scale tractography, while we applied a MIP mapping technique for simplified tractographic reconstruction. In this case, we reduced each DTI 3D volume dimensions by order- two magnitude before streamlining.
Our simplified tractographic reconstruction method keeps the main geometric features of fibres, allowing for an easier identification of their global morphological disposition, including the ventricular basal ring. Moreover, we noticed a clearly visible helical disposition of the myocardial fibres, in line with the helical myocardial band ventricular structure described by Torrent-Guasp. Finally, our simplified visualisation with single tracts identifies the main segments of the helical ventricular architecture.
DT-MRI makes possible the identification of a continuous helical architecture of the myocardial fibres, which validates Torrent-Guasp’s helical myocardial band ventricular anatomical model.

Title Local Analysis of Confidence Measures for Optical Flow Quality Evaluation Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication 9th International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 3 Issue Pages 450-457
Keywords Optical Flow; Confidence Measure; Performance Evaluation.
Abstract Optical Flow (OF) techniques facing the complexity of real sequences have been developed in the last years. Even using the most appropriate technique for our specific problem, at some points the output flow might fail to achieve the minimum error required for the system. Confidence measures computed from either input data or OF output should discard those points where OF is not accurate enough for its further use. It follows that evaluating the capabilities of a confidence measure for bounding OF error is as important as the definition
itself. In this paper we analyze different confidence measures and point out their advantages and limitations for their use in real world settings. We also explore the agreement with current tools for their evaluation of confidence measures performance.

Title Cross-spectral Stereo Correspondence using Dense Flow Fields Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication 9th International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 3 Issue Pages 613-617
Keywords Cross-spectral Stereo Correspondence; Dense Optical Flow; Infrared and Visible Spectrum
Abstract This manuscript addresses the cross-spectral stereo correspondence problem. It proposes the usage of a dense flow field based representation instead of the original cross-spectral images, which have a low correlation. In this way, working in the flow field space, classical cost functions can be used as similarity measures. Preliminary experimental results on urban environments have been obtained showing the validity of the proposed approach.

Title A General-purpose Crowdsourcing Platform for Mobile Devices Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication 9th International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume (down) 3 Issue Pages 211-215
Keywords Crowdsourcing Platform; Mobile Crowdsourcing
Abstract This paper presents details of a general purpose micro-task on-demand platform based on the crowdsourcing philosophy. This platform was specifically developed for mobile devices in order to exploit the strengths of such devices; namely: i) massivity, ii) ubiquity and iii) embedded sensors. The combined use of mobile platforms and the crowdsourcing model allows to tackle from the simplest to the most complex tasks. Users experience is the highlighted feature of this platform (this fact is extended to both task-proposer and tasksolver). Proper tools according with a specific task are provided to a task-solver in order to perform his/her job in a simpler, faster and appealing way. Moreover, a task can be easily submitted by just selecting predefined templates, which cover a wide range of possible applications. Examples of its usage in computer vision and computer games are provided illustrating the potentiality of the platform.

Title Towards a computed-aided diagnosis system in colonoscopy: Automatic polyp segmentation using convolution neural networks Type Journal
Year 2018 Publication Journal of Medical Robotics Research Abbreviated Journal JMRR
Volume (down) 3 Issue 2 Pages
Keywords convolutional neural networks; colonoscopy; computer aided diagnosis
Abstract Early diagnosis is essential for the successful treatment of bowel cancers including colorectal cancer (CRC) and capsule endoscopic imaging with robotic actuation can be a valuable diagnostic tool when combined with automated image analysis. We present a deep learning rooted detection and segmentation framework for recognizing lesions in colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy images. We restructure established convolution architectures, such as VGG and ResNets, by converting them into fully-connected convolution networks (FCNs), ne-tune them and study their capabilities for polyp segmentation and detection. We additionally use Shape-from-Shading (SfS) to recover depth and provide a richer representation of the tissue's structure in colonoscopy images. Depth is
incorporated into our network models as an additional input channel to the RGB information and we demonstrate that the resulting network yields improved performance. Our networks are tested on publicly available datasets and the most accurate segmentation model achieved a mean segmentation IU of 47.78% and 56.95% on the ETIS-Larib and CVC-Colon datasets, respectively. For polyp
detection, the top performing models we propose surpass the current state of the art with detection recalls superior to 90% for all datasets tested. To our knowledge, we present the rst work to use FCNs for polyp segmentation in addition to proposing a novel combination of SfS and RGB that boosts performance.

Keywords Machine learning; data science; benchmark platform; reproducibility; competitions
Abstract Obtaining a standardized benchmark of computational methods is a major issue in data-science communities. Dedicated frameworks enabling fair benchmarking in a unified environment are yet to be developed. Here, we introduce Codabench, a meta-benchmark platform that is open sourced and community driven for benchmarking algorithms or software agents versus datasets or tasks. A public instance of Codabench is open to everyone free of charge and allows benchmark organizers to fairly compare submissions under the same setting (software, hardware, data, algorithms), with custom protocols and data formats. Codabench has unique features facilitating easy organization of flexible and reproducible benchmarks, such as the possibility of reusing templates of benchmarks and supplying compute resources on demand. Codabench has been used internally and externally on various applications, receiving more than 130 users and 2,500 submissions. As illustrative use cases, we introduce four diverse benchmarks covering graph machine learning, cancer heterogeneity, clinical diagnosis, and reinforcement learning.
