Title Linear Radial Patterns Characterization for Automatic Detection of Tonic Intestinal Contractions Type Book Chapter
Year 2006 Publication 11th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition Abbreviated Journal
Volume 4225 Issue Pages 178–187
Keywords
Abstract This work tackles the categorization of general linear radial patterns by means of the valleys and ridges detection and the use of descriptors of directional information, which are provided by steerable filters in different regions of the image. We successfully apply our proposal in the specific case of automatic detection of tonic contractions in video capsule endoscopy, which represent a paradigmatic example of linear radial patterns.

Title Anisotropic Feature Extraction from Endoluminal Images for Detection of Intestinal Contractions Type Book Chapter
Year 2006 Publication 9th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer–Assisted Intervention Abbreviated Journal
Volume 4191 Issue Pages 161–168
Keywords
Abstract Wireless endoscopy is a very recent and at the same time unique technique allowing to visualize and study the occurrence of con- tractions and to analyze the intestine motility. Feature extraction is es- sential for getting efficient patterns to detect contractions in wireless video endoscopy of small intestine. We propose a novel method based on anisotropic image filtering and efficient statistical classification of con- traction features. In particular, we apply the image gradient tensor for mining informative skeletons from the original image and a sequence of descriptors for capturing the characteristic pattern of contractions. Fea- tures extracted from the endoluminal images were evaluated in terms of their discriminatory ability in correct classifying images as either belong- ing to contractions or not. Classification was performed by means of a support vector machine classifier with a radial basis function kernel. Our classification rates gave sensitivity of the order of 90.84% and specificity of the order of 94.43% respectively. These preliminary results highlight the high efficiency of the selected descriptors and support the feasibility of the proposed method in assisting the automatic detection and analysis of contractions.

Title A Deterministic-Statistic Adventitia Detection in IVUS Images Type Conference Article
Year 2005 Publication 3rd International workshop on International Workshop on Functional Imaging and Modeling of the Heart Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 65-74
Keywords Electron microscopy; Unbending; 2D crystal; Interpolation; Approximation
Abstract Plaque analysis in IVUS planes needs accurate intima and adventitia models. Large variety in adventitia descriptors difficulties its detection and motivates using a classification strategy for selecting points on the structure. Whatever the set of descriptors used, the selection stage suffers from fake responses due to noise and uncompleted true curves. In order to smooth background noise while strengthening responses, we apply a restricted anisotropic filter that homogenizes grey levels along the image significant structures. Candidate points are extracted by means of a simple semi supervised adaptive classification of the filtered image response to edge and calcium detectors. The final model is obtained by interpolating the former line segments with an anisotropic contour closing technique based on functional extension principles.

Title A Factorization-based Approach to Photometric Stereo Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication International Journal of Imaging Systems and Technology Abbreviated Journal IJIST
Volume 21 Issue 1 Pages 115-119
Keywords
Abstract This article presents an adaptation of a factorization technique to tackle the photometric stereo problem. That is to recover the surface normals and reflectance of an object from a set of images obtained under different lighting conditions. The main contribution of the proposed approach is to consider pixels in shadow and saturated regions as missing data, in order to reduce their influence to the result. Concretely, an adapted Alternation technique is used to deal with missing data. Experimental results considering both synthetic and real images show the viability of the proposed factorization-based strategy. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Title Unique Hue Data for Colour Appearance Models. Part i: Loci of Unique Hues and Hue Uniformity Type Journal Article
Year 2011 Publication Color Research & Application Abbreviated Journal CRA
Volume 36 Issue 5 Pages 316-323
Keywords unique hues; colour appearance models; CIECAM02; hue uniformity
Abstract Psychophysical experiments were conducted to assess unique hues on a CRT display for a large sample of colour-normal observers (n 1⁄4 185). These data were then used to evaluate the most commonly used colour appear- ance model, CIECAM02, by transforming the CIEXYZ tris- timulus values of the unique hues to the CIECAM02 colour appearance attributes, lightness, chroma and hue angle. We report two findings: (1) the hue angles derived from our unique hue data are inconsistent with the commonly used Natural Color System hues that are incorporated in the CIECAM02 model. We argue that our predicted unique hue angles (derived from our large dataset) provide a more reliable standard for colour management applications when the precise specification of these salient colours is im- portant. (2) We test hue uniformity for CIECAM02 in all four unique hues and show significant disagreements for all hues, except for unique red which seems to be invariant under lightness changes. Our dataset is useful to improve the CIECAM02 model as it provides reliable data for benchmarking.

Title Generation of Augmented Video Sequences Combining Behavioral Animation and Multi Object Tracking Type Journal Article
Year 2009 Publication Computer Animation and Virtual Worlds Abbreviated Journal
Volume 20 Issue 4 Pages 473–489
Keywords
Abstract In this paper we present a novel approach to generate augmented video sequences in real-time, involving interactions between virtual and real agents in real scenarios. On the one hand, real agent motion is estimated by means of a multi-object tracking algorithm, which determines real objects' position over the scenario for each time step. On the other hand, virtual agents are provided with behavior models considering their interaction with the environment and with other agents. The resulting framework allows to generate video sequences involving behavior-based virtual agents that react to real agent behavior and has applications in education, simulation, and in the game and movie industries. We show the performance of the proposed approach in an indoor and outdoor scenario simulating human and vehicle agents. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
