Title | Logo Spotting by a Bag-of-words Approach for Document Categorization | Type | Conference Article
Year | 2009 | Publication | 10th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition | Abbreviated Journal
Volume | Issue | Pages | 111–115

Abstract | In this paper we present a method for document categorization which processes incoming document images such as invoices or receipts. The categorization of these document images is done in terms of the presence of a certain graphical logo detected without segmentation. The graphical logos are described by a set of local features and the categorization of the documents is performed by the use of a bag-of-words model. Spatial coherence rules are added to reinforce the correct category hypothesis, aiming also to spot the logo inside the document image. Experiments which demonstrate the effectiveness of this system on a large set of real data are presented.

Title | Text Segmentation in Colour Posters from the Spanish Civil War Era | Type | Conference Article

Abstract | The extraction of textual content from colour documents of a graphical nature is a complicated task. The text can be rendered in any colour, size and orientation while the existence of complex background graphics with repetitive patterns can make its localization and segmentation extremely difficult.
Here, we propose a new method for extracting textual content from such colour images that makes no assumption as to the size of the characters, their orientation or colour, while it is tolerant to characters that do not follow a straight baseline. We evaluate this method on a collection of documents with historical connotations: the Posters from the Spanish Civil War. |

Title | A Featureless and Stochastic Approach to On-board Stereo Vision System Pose | Type | Journal Article
Year | 2009 | Publication | Image and Vision Computing | Abbreviated Journal | IMAVIS |

Abstract | This paper presents a direct and stochastic technique for real-time estimation of on-board stereo head’s position and orientation. Unlike existing works which rely on feature extraction either in the image domain or in 3D space, our proposed approach directly estimates the unknown parameters from the stream of stereo pairs’ brightness. The pose parameters are tracked using the particle filtering framework which implicitly enforces the smoothness constraints on the estimated parameters. The proposed technique can be used with a driver assistance applications as well as with augmented reality applications. Extended experiments on urban environments with different road geometries are presented. Comparisons with a 3D data-based approach are presented. Moreover, we provide a performance study aiming at evaluating the accuracy of the proposed approach.

Abstract | Rich online map interaction represents a useful tool to get multimedia information related to physical places. With this type of systems, users can automatically compute the optimal route for a trip or to look for entertainment places or hotels near their actual position. Standard maps are defined as a fusion of layers, where each one contains specific data such height, streets, or a particular business location. In this paper we propose the construction of a visual content layer which describes the visual appearance of geographic locations in a city. We captured, by means of a Mobile Mapping system, a huge set of georeferenced images (> 500K) which cover the whole city of Barcelona. For each image, hundreds of region descriptions are computed off-line and described as a hash code. This allows an efficient and scalable way of accessing maps by visual content.

Title | Circular Blurred Shape Model for Symbol Spotting in Documents | Type | Conference Article

Abstract | Symbol spotting problem requires feature extraction strategies able to generalize from training samples and to localize the target object while discarding most part of the image. In the case of document analysis, symbol spotting techniques have to deal with a high variability of symbols' appearance. In this paper, we propose the Circular Blurred Shape Model descriptor. Feature extraction is performed capturing the spatial arrangement of significant object characteristics in a correlogram structure. Shape information from objects is shared among correlogram regions, being tolerant to the irregular deformations. Descriptors are learnt using a cascade of classifiers and Abadoost as the base classifier. Finally, symbol spotting is performed by means of a windowing strategy using the learnt cascade over plan and old musical score documents. Spotting and multi-class categorization results show better performance comparing with the state-of-the-art descriptors.

Abstract | JCR Impact Factor 2009: 0.391
In this paper, we present a fuzzy-set of parametric functions which segment the CIE lab space into eleven regions which correspond to the group of common universal categories present in all evolved languages as identified by anthropologists and linguists. The set of functions is intended to model a color-name assignment task by humans and differs from other models in its emphasis on the inter-color boundary regions, which were explicitly measured by means of a psychophysics experiment. In our particular implementation, the CIE lab space was segmented into eleven color categories using a Triple Sigmoid as the fuzzy sets basis, whose parameters are included in this paper. The model’s parameters were adjusted according to the psychophysical results of a yes/no discrimination paradigm where observers had to choose (English) names for isoluminant colors belonging to regions in-between neighboring categories. These colors were presented on a calibrated CRT monitor (14-bit x 3 precision). The experimental results show that inter- color boundary regions are much less defined than expected and color samples other than those near the most representatives are needed to define the position and shape of boundaries between categories. The extended set of model parameters is given as a table. |

Abstract | In this work the feasibility of building a socially aware badge that learns from user activities is explored. A wearable multisensor device has been prototyped for collecting data about user movements and photos of the environment where the user acts. Using motion data, speaking and other activities have been classified. Images have been analysed in order to complement motion data and help for the detection of social behaviours. A face detector and an activity classifier are both used for detecting if users have a social activity in the time they worn the device. Good results encourage the improvement of the system at both hardware and software level

Title | Efficient Object Pixel-Level Categorization using Bag of Features: Advances in Visual Computing | Type | Conference Article
Year | 2009 | Publication | 5th International Symposium on Visual Computing | Abbreviated Journal
Volume | 5875 | Issue | Pages | 44–55

Abstract | In this paper we present a pixel-level object categorization method suitable to be applied under real-time constraints. Since pixels are categorized using a bag of features scheme, the major bottleneck of such an approach would be the feature pooling in local histograms of visual words. Therefore, we propose to bypass this time-consuming step and directly obtain the score from a linear Support Vector Machine classifier. This is achieved by creating an integral image of the components of the SVM which can readily obtain the classification score for any image sub-window with only 10 additions and 2 products, regardless of its size. Besides, we evaluated the performance of two efficient feature quantization methods: the Hierarchical K-Means and the Extremely Randomized Forest. All experiments have been done in the Graz02 database, showing comparable, or even better results to related work with a lower computational cost.

Abstract | Symbol spotting systems are intended to retrieve regions of interest from a document image database where the queried symbol is likely to be found. They shall have the ability to recognize and locate graphical symbols in a single step. In this paper, we present a set of measures to evaluate the performance of a symbol spotting system in terms of recognition abilities, location accuracy and scalability. We show that the proposed measures allow to determine the weaknesses and strengths of different methods. In particular we have tested a symbol spotting method based on a set of four different off-the-shelf shape descriptors.

Abstract | Several techniques have been proposed for tackling the Structure from Motion problem through factorization in the case of missing data. However, when the percentage of unknown data is high, most of them may not perform as well as expected. Focussing on this problem, an iterative multiresolution scheme, which aims at recovering missing entries in the originally given input matrix, is proposed. Information recovered following a coarse-to-fine strategy is used for filling in the missing entries. The objective is to recover, as much as possible, missing data in the given matrix.
Thus, when a factorization technique is applied to the partially or totally filled in matrix, instead of to the originally given input one, better results will be obtained. An evaluation study about the robustness to missing and noisy data is reported. Experimental results obtained with synthetic and real video sequences are presented to show the viability of the proposed approach. |
