Title (down) The Impact of Color on Bag-of-Words based Object Recognition Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication 20th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 1549–1553
  Keywords
Abstract In recent years several works have aimed at exploiting color information in order to improve the bag-of-words based image representation. There are two stages in which color information can be applied in the bag-of-words framework. Firstly, feature detection can be improved by choosing highly informative color-based regions. Secondly, feature description, typically focusing on shape, can be improved with a color description of the local patches. Although both approaches have been shown to improve results the combined merits have not yet been analyzed. Therefore, in this paper we investigate the combined contribution of color to both the feature detection and extraction stages. Experiments performed on two challenging data sets, namely Flower and Pascal VOC 2009; clearly demonstrate that incorporating color in both feature detection and extraction significantly improves the overall performance.

Abstract Object perception is a key feature in order to make mobile robots able to perform high-level tasks. However, research aimed at addressing the constraints and limitations encountered in a mobile robotics scenario, like low image resolution, motion blur or tight computational constraints, is still very scarce. In order to facilitate future research in this direction, in this work we present an object detection and recognition dataset acquired using a mobile robotic platform. As a baseline for the dataset, we evaluated the cascade of weak classifiers object detection method from Viola and Jones.

Title (down) The ICDAR/GREC 2013 Music Scores Competition: Staff Removal Type Book Chapter
Year 2014 Publication Graphics Recognition. Current Trends and Challenges Abbreviated Journal
  Volume 8746 Issue Pages 207-220
Keywords Competition; Graphics recognition; Music scores; Writer identification; Staff removal
Abstract The first competition on music scores that was organized at ICDAR and GREC in 2011 awoke the interest of researchers, who participated in both staff removal and writer identification tasks. In this second edition, we focus on the staff removal task and simulate a real case scenario concerning old and degraded music scores. For this purpose, we have generated a new set of semi-synthetic images using two degradation models that we previously introduced: local noise and 3D distortions. In this extended paper we provide an extended description of the dataset, degradation models, evaluation metrics, the participant’s methods and the obtained results that could not be presented at ICDAR and GREC proceedings due to page limitations.

Abstract The first competition on music scores that was organized at ICDAR and GREC in 2011 awoke the interest of researchers, who participated both at staff removal and writer identification tasks. In this second edition, we propose a staff removal competition where we simulate old music scores. Thus, we have created a new set of images, which contain noise and 3D distortions.   Abstract In the last years, there has been a growing interest in the analysis of handwritten music scores. In this sense, our goal has been to foster the interest in the analysis of handwritten music scores by the proposal of two different competitions: Staff removal and Writer Identification. Both competitions have been tested on the CVC-MUSCIMA database: a ground-truth of handwritten music score images. This paper describes the competition details, including the dataset and ground-truth, the evaluation metrics, and a short description of the participants, their methods, and the obtained results.

Title (down) The GIDOC Prototype Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication 10th International Workshop on Pattern Recognition in Information Systems Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 82-89

Abstract Transcription of handwritten text in (old) documents is an important, time-consuming task for digital libraries. It might be carried out by first processing all document images off-line, and then manually supervising system transcriptions to edit incorrect parts. However, current techniques for automatic page layout analysis, text line detection and handwriting recognition are still far from perfect, and thus post-editing system output is not clearly better than simply ignoring it.

A more effective approach to transcribe old text documents is to follow an interactive- predictive paradigm in which both, the system is guided by the user, and the user is assisted by the system to complete the transcription task as efficiently as possible. Following this approach, a system prototype called GIDOC (Gimp-based Interactive transcription of old text DOCuments) has been developed to provide user-friendly, integrated support for interactive-predictive layout analysis, line detection and handwriting transcription.

GIDOC is designed to work with (large) collections of homogeneous documents, that is, of similar structure and writing styles. They are annotated sequentially, by (par- tially) supervising hypotheses drawn from statistical models that are constantly updated with an increasing number of available annotated documents. And this is done at different annotation levels. For instance, at the level of page layout analysis, GIDOC uses a novel text block detection method in which conventional, memoryless techniques are improved with a “history” model of text block positions. Similarly, at the level of text line image transcription, GIDOC includes a handwriting recognizer which is steadily improved with a growing number of (partially) supervised transcriptions.

Title (down) The GERMANA Database Type Conference Article
Year 2009 Publication 10th International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 301-305

Abstract A new handwritten text database, GERMANA, is presented to facilitate empirical comparison of different approaches to text line extraction and off-line handwriting recognition. GERMANA is the result of digitising and annotating a 764-page Spanish manuscript from 1891, in which most pages only contain nearly calligraphed text written on ruled sheets of well-separated lines. To our knowledge, it is the first publicly available database for handwriting research, mostly written in Spanish and comparable in size to standard databases. Due to its sequential book structure, it is also well-suited for realistic assessment of interactive handwriting recognition systems. To provide baseline results for reference in future studies, empirical results are also reported, using standard techniques and tools for preprocessing, feature extraction, HMM-based image modelling, and language modelling.

Title (down) The First Visual Object Tracking Segmentation VOTS2023 Challenge Results Type Conference Article
Year 2023 Publication Proceedings of the IEEE/CVF International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) Workshops Abbreviated Journal
  Volume Issue Pages 1796-1818
  Keywords
Abstract The Visual Object Tracking Segmentation VOTS2023 challenge is the eleventh annual tracker benchmarking activity of the VOT initiative. This challenge is the first to merge short-term and long-term as well as single-target and multiple-target tracking with segmentation masks as the only target location specification. A new dataset was created; the ground truth has been withheld to prevent overfitting. New performance measures and evaluation protocols have been created along with a new toolkit and an evaluation server. Results of the presented 47 trackers indicate that modern tracking frameworks are well-suited to deal with convergence of short-term and long-term tracking and that multiple and single target tracking can be considered a single problem. A leaderboard, with participating trackers details, the source code, the datasets, and the evaluation kit are publicly available at the challenge website\footnote https://www.votchallenge.net/vots2023/.

Title (down) The ESPOSALLES database: An ancient marriage license corpus for off-line handwriting recognition Type Journal Article

  Volume 46 Issue 6 Pages 1658-1669

Abstract Historical records of daily activities provide intriguing insights into the life of our ancestors, useful for demography studies and genealogical research. Automatic processing of historical documents, however, has mostly been focused on single works of literature and less on social records, which tend to have a distinct layout, structure, and vocabulary. Such information is usually collected by expert demographers that devote a lot of time to manually transcribe them. This paper presents a new database, compiled from a marriage license books collection, to support research in automatic handwriting recognition for historical documents containing social records. Marriage license books are documents that were used for centuries by ecclesiastical institutions to register marriage licenses. Books from this collection are handwritten and span nearly half a millennium until the beginning of the 20th century. In addition, a study is presented about the capability of state-of-the-art handwritten text recognition systems, when applied to the presented database. Baseline results are reported for reference in future studies.
