Abstract |
This paper presents an approach to mitigate the contribution of blood vessels to the energy image used at different tasks of automatic colonoscopy image analysis. This goal is achieved by introducing a characterization of endoluminal scene objects which allows us to differentiate between the trace of 2-dimensional visual objects,such as vessels, and shades from 3-dimensional visual objects, such as folds. The proposed characterization is based on the influence that the object shape has in the resulting visual feature, and it leads to the development of a blood vessel attenuation algorithm. A database consisting of manually labelled masks was built in order to test the performance of our method, which shows an encouraging success in blood vessel mitigation while keeping other structures intact. Moreover, by extending our method to the only available polyp localization
algorithm tested on a public database, blood vessel mitigation proved to have a positive influence on the overall performance. |

Abstract |
Cinemagraphs are short looping videos created by adding subtle motions to a static image. This kind of media is popular and engaging. However, automatic generation of cinemagraphs is an underexplored area and current solutions require tedious low-level manual authoring by artists. In this paper, we present an automatic method that allows generating human cinemagraphs from single RGB images. We investigate the problem in the context of dressed humans under the wind. At the core of our method is a novel cyclic neural network that produces looping cinemagraphs for the target loop duration. To circumvent the problem of collecting real data, we demonstrate that it is possible, by working in the image normal space, to learn garment motion dynamics on synthetic data and generalize to real data. We evaluate our method on both synthetic and real data and demonstrate that it is possible to create compelling and plausible cinemagraphs from single RGB images. |

We propose bookworm continual learning(BCL), a flexible setting where unseen classes can be inferred via a semantic model, and the visual model can be updated continually. Thus BCL generalizes both continual learning (CL) and zero-shot learning (ZSL). We also propose the bidirectional imagination (BImag) framework to address BCL where features of both past and future classes are generated. We observe that conditioning the feature generator on attributes can actually harm the continual learning ability, and propose two variants (joint class-attribute conditioning and asymmetric generation) to alleviate this problem. |

Abstract |
Guided image processing techniques are widely used for extracting information from a guiding image to aid in the processing of the guided one. These images may be sourced from different modalities, such as 2D and 3D, or different spectral bands, like visible and infrared. In the case of guided cross-spectral super-resolution, features from the two modal images are extracted and efficiently merged to migrate guidance information from one image, usually high-resolution (HR), toward the guided one, usually low-resolution (LR). Different approaches have been recently proposed focusing on the development of architectures for feature extraction and merging in the cross-spectral domains, but none of them care about the different nature of the given images. This paper focuses on the specific problem of guided thermal image super-resolution, where an LR thermal image is enhanced by an HR visible spectrum image. To improve existing guided super-resolution techniques, a novel scheme is proposed that maps the original guiding information to a thermal image-like representation that is similar to the output. Experimental results evaluating five different approaches demonstrate that the best results are achieved when the guiding and guided images share the same domain. |

We present a Bag-of-Visual-and-Depth-Words (BoVDW) model for gesture recognition, an extension of the Bag-of-Visual-Words (BoVW) model, that benefits from the multimodal fusion of visual and depth features. State-of-the-art RGB and depth features, including a new proposed depth descriptor, are analysed and combined in a late fusion fashion. The method is integrated in a continuous gesture recognition pipeline, where Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) algorithm is used to perform prior segmentation of gestures. Results of the method in public data sets, within our gesture recognition pipeline, show better performance in comparison to a standard BoVW model. |

In this paper, we present a segmentation-free word spotting method that is able to deal with heterogeneous document image collections. We propose a patch-based framework where patches are represented by a bag-of-visual-words model powered by SIFT descriptors. A later refinement of the feature vectors is performed by applying the latent semantic indexing technique. The proposed method performs well on both handwritten and typewritten historical document images. We have also tested our method on documents written in non-Latin scripts. |

Burst image restoration attempts to effectively utilize the complementary cues appearing in sequential images to produce a high-quality image. Most current methods use all the available images to obtain the reconstructed image. However, using more images for burst restoration is not always the best option regarding reconstruction quality and efficiency, as the images acquired by handheld imaging devices suffer from degradation and misalignment caused by the camera noise and shake. In this paper, we extend the perception-distortion tradeoff theory by introducing multiple-frame information. We propose the area of the unattainable region as a new metric for perception-distortion tradeoff evaluation and comparison. Based on this metric, we analyse the performance of burst restoration from the perspective of the perception-distortion tradeoff under both aligned bursts and misaligned bursts situations. Our analysis reveals the importance of inter-frame alignment for burst restoration and shows that the optimal burst length for the restoration model depends both on the degree of degradation and misalignment. |

The manual inspection of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images to detect clinically relevant patterns is a difficult and laborious task performed routinely by physicians. In this paper, we present a framework based on convolutional nets for the quick selection of IVUS frames containing arterial calcification, a pattern whose detection plays a vital role in the diagnosis of atherosclerosis. Preliminary experiments on a dataset acquired from eighty patients show that convolutional architectures improve detections of a shallow classifier in terms of 𝐹1-measure, precision and recall. |

We present a novel method to auto-calibrate gaze estimators based on gaze patterns obtained from other viewers. Our method is based on the observation that the gaze patterns of humans are indicative of where a new viewer will look at [12]. When a new viewer is looking at a stimulus, we first estimate a topology of gaze points (initial gaze points). Next, these points are transformed so that they match the gaze patterns of other humans to find the correct gaze points. In a flexible uncalibrated setup with a web camera and no chin rest, the proposed method was tested on ten subjects and ten images. The method estimates the gaze points after looking at a stimulus for a few seconds with an average accuracy of 4.3 im. Although the reported performance is lower than what could be achieved with dedicated hardware or calibrated setup, the proposed method still provides a sufficient accuracy to trace the viewer attention. This is promising considering the fact that auto-calibration is done in a flexible setup , without the use of a chin rest, and based only on a few seconds of gaze initialization data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to use human gaze patterns in order to auto-calibrate gaze estimators. |

Abstract |
The exploitation of cellular network data for studying human mobility has been a popular research topic in the last decade. Indeed, mobile terminals could be considered ubiquitous sensors that allow the observation of human movements on large scale without the need of relying on non-scalable techniques, such as surveys, or dedicated and expensive monitoring infrastructures. In particular, Call Detail Records (CDRs), collected by operators for billing purposes,
have been extensively employed due to their rather large availability, compared to other types of cellular data (e.g., signaling). Despite the interest aroused around this topic, the research community has generally agreed about the scarcity of information provided by CDRs: the position of mobile terminals is logged when some kind of activity (calls, SMS, data connections) occurs, which translates in a picture of mobility somehow biased by the activity degree of users.
By studying two datasets collected by a Nation-wide operator in 2014 and 2016, we show that the situation has drastically changed in terms of data volume and quality. The increase of flat data plans and the higher penetration of “
always connected” terminals have driven up the number of recorded CDRs, providing higher temporal accuracy for users’ locations. |

Abstract |
Camera-based Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have concentrated many research efforts in the last decades. Proposals based on monocular cameras require the knowledge of the camera pose with respect to the environment, in order to reach an efficient and robust performance. A common assumption in such systems is considering the road as planar, and the camera pose with respect to it as approximately known. However, in real situations, the camera pose varies along time due to the vehicle movement, the road slope, and irregularities on the road surface. Thus, the changes in the camera position and orientation (i.e., the egomotion) are critical information that must be estimated at every frame to avoid poor performances. This work focuses on egomotion estimation from a monocular camera under the ADAS context. We review and compare egomotion methods with simulated and real ADAS-like sequences. Basing on the results of our experiments, we show which of the considered nonlinear and linear algorithms have the best performance in this domain. |
