Title (up) Perceptual retrieval of architectural floor plans Type Conference Article

Abstract This paper proposes a runlength histogram signature as a percetual descriptor of architectural plans in a retrieval scenario. The style of an architectural drawing is characterized by the perception of lines, shapes and texture. Such visual stimuli are the basis for defining semantic concepts as space properties, symmetry, density, etc. We propose runlength histograms extracted in vertical, horizontal and diagonal directions as a characterization of line and space properties in floorplans, so it can be roughly associated to a description of walls and room structure. A retrieval application illustrates the performance of the proposed approach, where given a plan as a query,
similar ones are obtained from a database. A ground truth based on human observation has been constructed to validate the hypothesis. Preliminary results show the interest of the proposed approach and opens a challenging research line in graphics recognition.

Title (up) Perceptual tone-mapping operator based on multiresolution contrast decomposition Type Abstract
Year 2012 Publication Perception Abbreviated Journal PER
Volume 41 Issue Pages 86
Keywords
Abstract Tone-mapping operators (TMO) are used to display high dynamic range(HDR) images in low dynamic range (LDR) displays. Many computational and biologically inspired approaches have been used in the literature, being many of them based on multiresolution decompositions. In this work, a simple two stage model for TMO is presented. The first stage is a novel multiresolution contrast decomposition, which is inspired in a pyramidal contrast decomposition (Peli, 1990 Journal of the Optical Society of America7(10), 2032-2040).
This novel multiresolution decomposition represents the Michelson contrast of the image at different spatial scales. This multiresolution contrast representation, applied on the intensity channel of an opponent colour decomposition, is processed by a non-linear saturating model of V1 neurons (Albrecht et al, 2002 Journal ofNeurophysiology 88(2) 888-913). This saturation model depends on the visual frequency, and it has been modified in order to include information from the extended Contrast Sensitivity Function (e-CSF) (Otazu et al, 2010 Journal ofVision10(12) 5).
A set of HDR images in Radiance RGBE format (from CIS HDR Photographic Survey and Greg Ward database) have been used to test the model, obtaining a set of LDR images. The resulting LDR images do not show the usual halo or color modification artifacts.

Title (up) Performance Evaluation of Feature Point Descriptors in the Infrared Domain Type Conference Article
Year 2014 Publication 9th International Conference on Computer Vision Theory and Applications Abbreviated Journal
Volume 1 Issue Pages 545-550
Keywords Infrared Imaging; Feature Point Descriptors
Abstract This paper presents a comparative evaluation of classical feature point descriptors when they are used in the long-wave infrared spectral band. Robustness to changes in rotation, scaling, blur, and additive noise are evaluated using a state of the art framework. Statistical results using an outdoor image data set are presented together with a discussion about the differences with respect to the results obtained when images from the visible spectrum are considered.

Title (up) Person Perception Biases Exposed: Revisiting the First Impressions Dataset Type Conference Article
Year 2021 Publication IEEE Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 13-21
Keywords
Abstract This work revisits the ChaLearn First Impressions database, annotated for personality perception using pairwise comparisons via crowdsourcing. We analyse for the first time the original pairwise annotations, and reveal existing person perception biases associated to perceived attributes like gender, ethnicity, age and face attractiveness.
We show how person perception bias can influence data labelling of a subjective task, which has received little attention from the computer vision and machine learning communities by now. We further show that the mechanism used to convert pairwise annotations to continuous values may magnify the biases if no special treatment is considered. The findings of this study are relevant for the computer vision community that is still creating new datasets on subjective tasks, and using them for practical applications, ignoring these perceptual biases.

Title (up) Person Re-identification by Iterative Re-weighted Sparse Ranking Type Journal Article
Year 2015 Publication IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence Abbreviated Journal TPAMI
Volume 37 Issue 8 Pages 1629 - 1642
Keywords
Abstract In this paper we introduce a method for person re-identification based on discriminative, sparse basis expansions of targets in terms of a labeled gallery of known individuals. We propose an iterative extension to sparse discriminative classifiers capable of ranking many candidate targets. The approach makes use of soft- and hard- re-weighting to redistribute energy among the most relevant contributing elements and to ensure that the best candidates are ranked at each iteration. Our approach also leverages a novel visual descriptor which we show to be discriminative while remaining robust to pose and illumination variations. An extensive comparative evaluation is given demonstrating that our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on single- and multi-shot person re-identification scenarios on the VIPeR, i-LIDS, ETHZ, and CAVIAR4REID datasets. The combination of our descriptor and iterative sparse basis expansion improves state-of-the-art rank-1 performance by six percentage points on VIPeR and by 20 on CAVIAR4REID compared to other methods with a single gallery image per person. With multiple gallery and probe images per person our approach improves by 17 percentage points the state-of-the-art on i-LIDS and by 72 on CAVIAR4REID at rank-1. The approach is also quite efficient, capable of single-shot person re-identification over galleries containing hundreds of individuals at about 30 re-identifications per second.

Title (up) Person-specific face shape estimation under varying head pose from single snapshots Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication 20th International Conference on Pattern Recognition Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 3496–3499
Keywords
Abstract This paper presents a new method for person-specific face shape estimation under varying head pose of a previously unseen person from a single image. We describe a featureless approach based on a deformable 3D model and a learned face subspace. The proposed approach is based on maximizing a likelihood measure associated with a learned face subspace, which is carried out by a stochastic and genetic optimizer. We conducted the experiments on a subset of Honda Video Database showing the feasibility and robustness of the proposed approach. For this reason, our approach could lend itself nicely to complex frameworks involving 3D face tracking and face gesture recognition in monocular videos.
