Title (up) Spotting Graphical Symbols in Camera-Acquired Documents in Real Time Type Book Chapter
Year 2014 Publication Graphics Recognition. Current Trends and Challenges Abbreviated Journal
Volume 8746 Issue Pages 3-10
Keywords
Abstract In this paper we present a system devoted to spot graphical symbols in camera-acquired document images. The system is based on the extraction and further matching of ORB compact local features computed over interest key-points. Then, the FLANN indexing framework based on approximate nearest neighbor search allows to efficiently match local descriptors between the captured scene and the graphical models. Finally, the RANSAC algorithm is used in order to compute the homography between the spotted symbol and its appearance in the document image. The proposed approach is efficient and is able to work in real time.

Title (up) SSP: Sketching slide Presentations, a Syntactic Approach Type Book Chapter
Year 2010 Publication Graphics Recognition. Achievements, Challenges, and Evolution. 8th International Workshop, GREC 2009. Selected Papers Abbreviated Journal
Volume 6020 Issue Pages 118-129

Abstract The design of a slide presentation is a creative process. In this process first, humans visualize in their minds what they want to explain. Then, they have to be able to represent this knowledge in an understandable way. There exists a lot of commercial software that allows to create our own slide presentations but the creativity of the user is rather limited. In this article we present an application that allows the user to create and visualize a slide presentation from a sketch. A slide may be seen as a graphical document or a diagram where its elements are placed in a particular spatial arrangement. To describe and recognize slides a syntactic approach is proposed. This approach is based on an Adjacency Grammar and a parsing methodology to cope with this kind of grammars. The experimental evaluation shows the performance of our methodology from a qualitative and a quantitative point of view. Six different slides containing different number of symbols, from 4 to 7, have been given to the users and they have drawn them without restrictions in the order of the elements. The quantitative results give an idea on how suitable is our methodology to describe and recognize the different elements in a slide.

Title (up) Stereo-based Candidate Generation for Pedestrian Protection Systems Type Book Chapter
Year 2010 Publication Binocular Vision: Development, Depth Perception and Disorders Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue 9 Pages 189–208
Keywords Pedestrian Detection
Abstract This chapter describes a stereo-based algorithm that provides candidate image windows to a latter 2D classification stage in an on-board pedestrian detection system. The proposed algorithm, which consists of three stages, is based on the use of both stereo imaging and scene prior knowledge (i.e., pedestrians are on the ground) to reduce the candidate searching space. First, a successful road surface fitting algorithm provides estimates on the relative ground-camera pose. This stage directs the search toward the road area thus avoiding irrelevant regions like the sky. Then, three different schemes are used to scan the estimated road surface with pedestrian-sized windows: (a) uniformly distributed through the road surface (3D); (b) uniformly distributed through the image (2D); (c) not uniformly distributed but according to a quadratic function (combined 2D-3D). Finally, the set of candidate windows is reduced by analyzing their 3D content. Experimental results of the proposed algorithm, together with statistics of searching space reduction are provided.

Title (up) Subtle Facial Expression Recognition in Still Images and Videos Type Book Chapter
Year 2011 Publication Advances in Face Image Analysis: Techniques and Technologies Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue 14 Pages 259-277
Keywords
Abstract This chapter addresses the recognition of basic facial expressions. It has three main contributions. First, the authors introduce a view- and texture independent schemes that exploits facial action parameters estimated by an appearance-based 3D face tracker. they represent the learned facial actions associated with different facial expressions by time series. Two dynamic recognition schemes are proposed: (1) the first is based on conditional predictive models and on an analysis-synthesis scheme, and (2) the second is based on examples allowing straightforward use of machine learning approaches. Second, the authors propose an efficient recognition scheme based on the detection of keyframes in videos. Third, the authors compare the dynamic scheme with a static one based on analyzing individual snapshots and show that in general the former performs better than the latter. The authors then provide evaluations of performance using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), Non parametric Discriminant Analysis (NDA), and Support Vector Machines (SVM).

Title (up) Suppression of IVUS Image Rotation. A Kinematic Approach Type Book Chapter
Year 2005 Publication Functional Imaging and Modeling of the Heart Abbreviated Journal LNCS
Volume 3504 Issue Pages 889-892
Keywords
Abstract IntraVascular Ultrasound (IVUS) is an exploratory technique used in interventional procedures that shows cross section images of arteries and provides qualitative information about the causes and severity of the arterial lumen narrowing. Cross section analysis as well as visualization of plaque extension in a vessel segment during the catheter imaging pullback are the technique main advantages. However, IVUS sequence exhibits a periodic rotation artifact that makes difficult the longitudinal lesion inspection and hinders any segmentation algorithm. In this paper we propose a new kinematic method to estimate and remove the image rotation of IVUS images sequences. Results on several IVUS sequences show good results and prompt some of the clinical applications to vessel dynamics study, and relation to vessel pathology.
