Title Computer Vision in Vehicle Technology: Land, Sea & Air Type Book Whole
Year 2017 Publication (up) Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 161-163
Keywords
Abstract Summary This chapter examines different vision-based commercial solutions for real-live problems related to vehicles. It is worth mentioning the recent astonishing performance of deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) in difficult visual tasks such as image classification, object recognition/localization/detection, and semantic segmentation. In fact,
different DCNN architectures are already being explored for low-level tasks such as optical flow and disparity computation, and higher level ones such as place recognition.

Title Challenges in Multi-modal Gesture Recognition Type Book Chapter

Abstract This paper surveys the state of the art on multimodal gesture recognition and introduces the JMLR special topic on gesture recognition 2011–2015. We began right at the start of the Kinect TMTM revolution when inexpensive infrared cameras providing image depth recordings became available. We published papers using this technology and other more conventional methods, including regular video cameras, to record data, thus providing a good overview of uses of machine learning and computer vision using multimodal data in this area of application. Notably, we organized a series of challenges and made available several datasets we recorded for that purpose, including tens of thousands of videos, which are available to conduct further research. We also overview recent state of the art works on gesture recognition based on a proposed taxonomy for gesture recognition, discussing challenges and future lines of research.

Title Automatic Reminiscence Therapy for Dementia Type Conference Article
Year 2020 Publication (up) 10th ACM International Conference on Multimedia Retrieval Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 383-387
Keywords
Abstract With people living longer than ever, the number of cases with dementia such as Alzheimer's disease increases steadily. It affects more than 46 million people worldwide, and it is estimated that in 2050 more than 100 million will be affected. While there are not effective treatments for these terminal diseases, therapies such as reminiscence, that stimulate memories from the past are recommended. Currently, reminiscence therapy takes place in care homes and is guided by a therapist or a carer. In this work, we present an AI-based solution to automatize the reminiscence therapy, which consists in a dialogue system that uses photos as input to generate questions. We run a usability case study with patients diagnosed of mild cognitive impairment that shows they found the system very entertaining and challenging. Overall, this paper presents how reminiscence therapy can be automatized by using machine learning, and deployed to smartphones and laptops, making the therapy more accessible to every person affected by dementia.

Title Seal Object Detection in Document Images using GHT of Local Component Shapes Type Conference Article
Year 2010 Publication (up) 10th ACM Symposium On Applied Computing Abbreviated Journal
Volume Issue Pages 23–27
Keywords
Abstract Due to noise, overlapped text/signature and multi-oriented nature, seal (stamp) object detection involves a difficult challenge. This paper deals with automatic detection of seal from documents with cluttered background. Here, a seal object is characterized by scale and rotation invariant spatial feature descriptors (distance and angular position) computed from recognition result of individual connected components (characters). Recognition of multi-scale and multi-oriented component is done using Support Vector Machine classifier. Generalized Hough Transform (GHT) is used to detect the seal and a voting is casted for finding possible location of the seal object in a document based on these spatial feature descriptor of components pairs. The peak of votes in GHT accumulator validates the hypothesis to locate the seal object in a document. Experimental results show that, the method is efficient to locate seal instance of arbitrary shape and orientation in documents.
