Abstract | Article ID 491819
Social Signal Processing is an emergent area of research that focuses on the analysis of social constructs. Dominance and interest are two of these social constructs. Dominance refers to the level of influence a person has in a conversation. Interest, when referred in terms of group interactions, can be defined as the degree of engagement that the members of a group collectively display during their interaction. In this paper, we argue that only using behavioral motion information, we are able to predict the interest of observers when looking at face-to-face interactions as well as the dominant people. First, we propose a simple set of movement-based features from body, face, and mouth activity in order to define a higher set of interaction indicators. The considered indicators are manually annotated by observers. Based on the opinions obtained, we define an automatic binary dominance detection problem and a multiclass interest quantification problem. Error-Correcting Output Codes framework is used to learn to rank the perceived observer's interest in face-to-face interactions meanwhile Adaboost is used to solve the dominant detection problem. The automatic system shows good correlation between the automatic categorization results and the manual ranking made by the observers in both dominance and interest detection problems. |

Abstract | The classication of large number of object categories is a challenging trend in the Machine Learning eld. In literature, this is often addressed using an ensemble of classiers. In this scope, the Error-Correcting Output Codes framework has demonstrated to be a powerful tool for the combination of classiers. However, most of the state-of-the-art ECOC approaches use a linear or exponential number of classiers, making the discrimination of a large number of classes unfeasible. In this paper, we explore and propose a minimal design of ECOC in terms of the number of classiers. Evolutionary computation is used for tuning the parameters of the classiers and looking for the best Minimal ECOC code conguration. The results over several public UCI data sets and a challenging multi-class Computer Vision problem show that the proposed methodology obtains comparable and even better results than state-of-the-art ECOC methodologies with far less number of dichotomizers.

Abstract | Social network analysis became a common technique used to model and quantify the properties of social interactions. In this paper, we propose an integrated framework to explore the characteristics of a social network extracted from
multimodal dyadic interactions. First, speech detection is performed through an audio/visual fusion scheme based on stacked sequential learning. In the audio domain, speech is detected through clusterization of audio features. Clusters are modelled by means of an One-state Hidden Markov Model containing a diagonal covariance Gaussian Mixture Model. In the visual domain, speech detection is performed through differential-based feature extraction from the segmented mouth region, and a dynamic programming matching procedure. Second, in order to model the dyadic interactions, we employed the Influence Model whose states encode the previous integrated audio/visual data. Third, the social network is extracted based on the estimated influences. For our study, we used a set of videos belonging to New York Times’ Blogging Heads opinion blog. The results are reported both in terms of accuracy of the audio/visual data fusion and centrality measures used to characterize the social network. |

Abstract | Post Conference IEEE-IS 2008
The Chagas’ disease is endemic in all Latin America, affecting millions of people in the continent. In order to diagnose and treat the chagas’ disease, it is important to detect and measure the coronary damage of the patient. In this paper, we analyze and categorize patients into different groups based on the coronary damage produced by the disease. Based on the features of the heart cycle extracted using high resolution ECG, a multi-class scheme of Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC)is formulated and successfully applied. The results show that the proposed scheme obtains significant performance improvements compared to previous works and state-of-the-art ECOC designs. |

Abstract | In this paper, we present a new framework for image segmentation based on parametrized active contours. The contour and the points of the image space are parametrized using a set of reduced control points that have to form a closed polygon in two dimensional problems and a closed surface in three dimensional problems. By moving the control points, the active contour evolves. We use mean value coordinates as the parametrization tool for the interface, which allows to parametrize any point of the space, inside or outside the closed polygon
or surface. Region-based energies such as the one proposed by Chan and Vese can be easily implemented in both two and three dimensional segmentation problems. We show the usefulness of our approach with several experiments. |

Title | Spatial Discriminant ICA for RS-fMRI characterisation | Type | Conference Article

Abstract | Resting-State fMRI (RS-fMRI) is a brain imaging technique useful for exploring functional connectivity. A major point of interest in RS-fMRI analysis is to isolate connectivity patterns characterising disorders such as for instance ADHD. Such characterisation is usually performed in two steps: first, all connectivity patterns in the data are extracted by means of Independent Component Analysis (ICA); second, standard statistical tests are performed over the extracted patterns to find differences between control and clinical groups. In this work we introduce a novel, single-step, approach for this problem termed Spatial Discriminant ICA. The algorithm can efficiently isolate networks of functional connectivity characterising a clinical group by combining ICA and a new variant of the Fisher’s Linear Discriminant also introduced in this work. As the characterisation is carried out in a single step, it potentially provides for a richer characterisation of inter-class differences. The algorithm is tested using synthetic and real fMRI data, showing promising results in both experiments.
