Abstract Natural languages can often be modelled by suitable grammars whose knowledge can improve the word spotting results. The implicit contextual information is even more useful when dealing with information that is intrinsically described as one collection of records. In this paper, we present one approach to word spotting which uses the contextual information of records to improve the results. The method relies on Markov Logic Networks to probabilistically model the relational organization of handwritten records. The performance has been evaluated on the Barcelona Marriages Dataset that contains structured handwritten records that summarize marriage information.

Abstract In this work, we propose an encoder-decoder-like architecture to perform face reenactment in image sequences. Our goal is to transfer the training subject identity to a given test subject. We regularize face reenactment by facial action unit intensity and 3D gaze vector regression. This way, we enforce the network to transfer subtle facial expressions and eye dynamics, providing a more lifelike result. The proposed encoder-decoder receives as input the previous sequence frame stacked to the current frame image of facial landmarks. Thus, the generated frames benefit from appearance and geometry, while keeping temporal coherence for the generated sequence. At test stage, a new target subject with the facial performance of the source subject and the appearance of the training subject is reenacted. Principal component analysis is applied to project the test subject geometry to the closest training subject geometry before reenactment. Evaluation of our proposal shows faster convergence, and more accurate and realistic results in comparison to other architectures without action units and gaze regularization.

Abstract Historical documents suffer from different types of degradation and noise such as background variation, uneven illumination or dark spots. In case of double-sided documents, another common problem is that the back side of the document usually interferes with the front side because of the transparency of the document or ink bleeding. This effect is called the show through phenomenon. Many methods are developed to solve these problems, and in the case of show-through, by scanning and matching both the front and back sides of the document. In contrast, our approach is designed to use only one side of the scanned document. We hypothesize that show-trough are low contrast components, while foreground components are high contrast ones. A Multiresolution Contrast (MC) decomposition is presented in order to estimate the contrast of features at different spatial scales. We cancel the show-through phenomenon by thresholding these low contrast components. This decomposition is also able to enhance the image removing shadowed areas by weighting spatial scales. Results show that the enhanced images improve the readability of the documents, allowing scholars both to recover unreadable words and to solve ambiguities.

Abstract The analysis and recognition of music scores has attracted the interest of researchers for decades. Optical Music Recognition (OMR) is a classical research field of Document Image Analysis and Recognition (DIAR), whose aim is to extract information from music scores. Music scores contain both graphical and textual information, and for this reason, techniques are closely related to graphics recognition and text recognition. Since music scores use a particular diagrammatic notation that follow the rules of music theory, many approaches make use of context information to guide the recognition and solve ambiguities. This chapter overviews the main Optical Music Recognition (OMR) approaches. Firstly, the different methods are grouped according to the OMR stages, namely, staff removal, music symbol recognition, and syntactical analysis. Secondly, specific approaches for old and handwritten music scores are reviewed. Finally, online approaches and commercial systems are also commented.

Title Towards Self-Supervised Gaze Estimation Type Miscellaneous

Abstract Recent joint embedding-based self-supervised methods have surpassed standard supervised approaches on various image recognition tasks such as image classification. These self-supervised methods aim at maximizing agreement between features extracted from two differently transformed views of the same image, which results in learning an invariant representation with respect to appearance and geometric image transformations. However, the effectiveness of these approaches remains unclear in the context of gaze estimation, a structured regression task that requires equivariance under geometric transformations (e.g., rotations, horizontal flip). In this work, we propose SwAT, an equivariant version of the online clustering-based self-supervised approach SwAV, to learn more informative representations for gaze estimation. We demonstrate that SwAT, with ResNet-50 and supported with uncurated unlabeled face images, outperforms state-of-the-art gaze estimation methods and supervised baselines in various experiments. In particular, we achieve up to 57% and 25% improvements in cross-dataset and within-dataset evaluation tasks on existing benchmarks (ETH-XGaze, Gaze360, and MPIIFaceGaze).

Abstract The exploitation of cellular network data for studying human mobility has been a popular research topic in the last decade. Indeed, mobile terminals could be considered ubiquitous sensors that allow the observation of human movements on large scale without the need of relying on non-scalable techniques, such as surveys, or dedicated and expensive monitoring infrastructures. In particular, Call Detail Records (CDRs), collected by operators for billing purposes,
have been extensively employed due to their rather large availability, compared to other types of cellular data (e.g., signaling). Despite the interest aroused around this topic, the research community has generally agreed about the scarcity of information provided by CDRs: the position of mobile terminals is logged when some kind of activity (calls, SMS, data connections) occurs, which translates in a picture of mobility somehow biased by the activity degree of users.
By studying two datasets collected by a Nation-wide operator in 2014 and 2016, we show that the situation has drastically changed in terms of data volume and quality. The increase of flat data plans and the higher penetration of “
always connected” terminals have driven up the number of recorded CDRs, providing higher temporal accuracy for users’ locations.

The proceedings here published demonstrate new and innovative solutions and highlight technical problems in each field that are challenging and worthy of being disseminated to the interested research audiences. VISIGRAPP 2021 was organized to promote a discussion forum about the conference’s research topics between researchers, developers, manufacturers and end-users, and to establish guidelines in the development of more advanced solutions. This year VISIGRAPP was, exceptionally, held as a web-based event, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from 8 – 10 February. We received a high number of paper submissions for this edition of VISIGRAPP, 371 in total, with contributions from 52 countries. This attests to the success and global dimension of VISIGRAPP. To evaluate each submission, we used a hierarchical process of double-blind evaluation where each paper was reviewed by two to six experts from the International Program Committee (IPC). The IPC selected for oral presentation and for publication as full papers 12 papers from GRAPP, 8 from HUCAPP, 11 papers from IVAPP, and 56 papers from VISAPP, which led to a result for the full-paper acceptance ratio of 24% and a high-quality program. Apart from the above full papers, the conference program also features 118 short papers and 67 poster presentations. We hope that these conference proceedings, which are submitted for indexation by Thomson Reuters Conference Proceedings Citation Index, SCOPUS, DBLP, Semantic Scholar, Google Scholar, EI and Microsoft Academic, will help the Computer Vision, Imaging, Visualization, Computer Graphics and Human-Computer Interaction communities to find interesting research work. Moreover, we are proud to inform that the program also includes three plenary keynote lectures, given by internationally distinguished researchers, namely Federico Tombari (Google and Technical University of Munich, Germany), Dieter Schmalstieg (Graz University of Technology, Austria) and Nathalie Henry Riche (Microsoft Research, United States), thus contributing to increase the overall quality of the conference and to provide a deeper understanding of the conference’s interest fields. Furthermore, a short list of the presented papers will be selected to be extended into a forthcoming book of VISIGRAPP Selected Papers to be published by Springer during 2021 in the CCIS series. Moreover, a short list of presented papers will be selected for publication of extended and revised versions in a special issue of the Springer Nature Computer Science journal. All papers presented at this conference will be available at the SCITEPRESS Digital Library. Three awards are delivered at the closing session, to recognize the best conference paper, the best student paper and the best poster for each of the four conferences. There is also an award for best industrial paper to be delivered at the closing session for VISAPP. In the current paper, we propose an approach which does not require explicit saliency maps to improve image classification, but they are learned implicitely, during the training of an end-to-end image classification task. We show that our approach obtains similar results as the case when the saliency maps are provided explicitely. Combining RGB data with saliency maps represents a significant advantage for object recognition, especially for the case when training data is limited. We validate our method on several datasets for fine-grained classification tasks (Flowers, Birds and Cars). In addition, we show that our saliency estimation method, which is trained without any saliency groundtruth data, obtains competitive results on real image saliency benchmark (Toronto), and outperforms deep saliency models with synthetic images (SID4VAM).
