Abstract |
We describe an equivalence of categories between the category of mixed Hodge structures and a category of equivariant vector bundles on a toric model of the complex projective plane which verify some semistability condition. We then apply this correspondence to define an invariant which generalizes the notion of R-split mixed Hodge structure and give calculations for the first group of cohomology of possibly non smooth or non-complete curves of genus 0 and 1. Finally, we describe some extension groups of mixed Hodge structures in terms of equivariant extensions of coherent sheaves. © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim |

Abstract |
The log-polar space variant representation, motivated by biological vision, has been widely studied in the literature. Its data reduction and invariance properties made it useful in many vision applications. However, due to its nature, it fails in preserving features in the periphery. In the current work, as an attempt to overcome this problem, we propose a novel space-variant representation. It is evaluated and proved to be better than the log-polar representation in preserving the peripheral information, crucial for on-board mobile vision applications. The evaluation is performed by comparing log-polar and the proposed representation once they are used for estimating dense optical flow. |

Abstract |
This paper is focused on the automatic recognition of human events in static images. Popular techniques use knowledge of the human pose for inferring the action, and the most recent approaches tend to combine pose information with either knowledge of the scene or of the objects with which the human interacts. Our approach makes a step forward in this direction by combining the human pose with the scene in which the human is placed, together with the spatial relationships between humans and objects. Based on standard, simple descriptors like HOG and SIFT, recognition performance is enhanced when these three types of knowledge are taken into account. Results obtained in the PASCAL 2010 Action Recognition Dataset demonstrate that our technique reaches state-of-the-art results using simple descriptors and classifiers. |

Abstract |
Human behavior is contextualized and understanding the scene of an action is crucial for giving proper semantics to behavior. In this chapter we present a novel approach for scene understanding. The emphasis of this work is on the particular case of Human Event Understanding. We introduce a new taxonomy to organize the different semantic levels of the Human Event Understanding framework proposed. Such a framework particularly contributes to the scene understanding domain by (i) extracting behavioral patterns from the integrative analysis of spatial, temporal, and contextual evidence and (ii) integrative analysis of bottom-up and top-down approaches in Human Event Understanding. We will explore how the information about interactions between humans and their environment influences the performance of activity recognition, and how this can be extrapolated to the temporal domain in order to extract higher inferences from human events observed in sequences of images. |

Abstract |
This paper introduces a novel approach to automatic concept transfer; examples of concepts are “romantic”, “earthy”, and “luscious”. The approach modifies the color content of an input image given only a concept specified by a user in natural language, thereby requiring minimal user input. This approach is particularly useful for users who are aware of the message they wish to convey in the transferred image while being unsure of the color combination needed to achieve the corresponding transfer. The user may adjust the intensity level of the concept transfer to his/her liking with a single parameter. The proposed approach uses a convex clustering algorithm, with a novel pruning mechanism, to automatically set the complexity of models of chromatic content. It also uses the Earth-Mover's Distance to compute a mapping between the models of the input image and the target chromatic concept. Results show that our approach yields transferred images which effectively represent concepts, as confirmed by a user study. |

Abstract |
Many successful models for predicting attention in a scene involve three main steps: convolution with a set of filters, a center-surround mechanism and spatial pooling to construct a saliency map. However, integrating spatial information and justifying the choice of various parameter values remain open problems. In this paper we show that an efficient model of color appearance in human vision, which contains a principled selection of parameters as well as an innate spatial pooling mechanism, can be generalized to obtain a saliency model that outperforms state-of-the-art models. Scale integration is achieved by an inverse wavelet transform over the set of scale-weighted center-surround responses. The scale-weighting function (termed ECSF) has been optimized to better replicate psychophysical data on color appearance, and the appropriate sizes of the center-surround inhibition windows have been determined by training a Gaussian Mixture Model on eye-fixation data, thus avoiding ad-hoc parameter selection. Additionally, we conclude that the extension of a color appearance model to saliency estimation adds to the evidence for a common low-level visual front-end for different visual tasks. |

Abstract |
Maximizing both the area coverage and the resolution per target is highly desirable in many applications of computer vision. However, with a limited number of cameras viewing a scene, the two objectives are contradictory. This chapter is dedicated to active vision systems, trying to achieve a trade-off between these two aims and examining the use of high-level reasoning in such scenarios. The chapter starts by introducing different approaches to active cameras configurations. Later, a single active camera system to track a moving object is developed, offering the reader first-hand understanding of the issues involved. Another section discusses practical considerations in building an active vision platform, taking as an example a multi-camera system developed for a European project. The last section of the chapter reflects upon the future trends of using semantic factors to drive smartly coordinated active systems. |

Abstract |
We present a method for spotting a subgraph in a graph repository. Subgraph spotting is a very interesting research problem for various application domains where the use of a relational data structure is mandatory. Our proposed method accomplishes subgraph spotting through graph embedding. We achieve automatic indexation of a graph repository during off-line learning phase, where we (i) break the graphs into 2-node sub graphs (a.k.a. cliques of order 2), which are primitive building-blocks of a graph, (ii) embed the 2-node sub graphs into feature vectors by employing our recently proposed explicit graph embedding technique, (iii) cluster the feature vectors in classes by employing a classic agglomerative clustering technique, (iv) build an index for the graph repository and (v) learn a Bayesian network classifier. The subgraph spotting is achieved during the on-line querying phase, where we (i) break the query graph into 2-node sub graphs, (ii) embed them into feature vectors, (iii) employ the Bayesian network classifier for classifying the query 2-node sub graphs and (iv) retrieve the respective graphs by looking-up in the index of the graph repository. The graphs containing all query 2-node sub graphs form the set of result graphs for the query. Finally, we employ the adjacency matrix of each result graph along with a score function, for spotting the query graph in it. The proposed subgraph spotting method is equally applicable to a wide range of domains, offering ease of query by example (QBE) and granularity of focused retrieval. Experimental results are presented for graphs generated from two repositories of electronic and architectural document images. |

Abstract |
Human detection is a key component in fields such as advanced driving assistance and video surveillance. However, even detecting non-occluded standing humans remains a challenge of intensive research. Finding good features to build human models for further detection is probably one of the most important issues to face. Currently, shape, texture and motion features have deserve extensive attention in the literature. However, color-based features, which are important in other domains (e.g., image categorization), have received much less attention. In fact, the use of RGB color space has become a kind of choice by default. The focus has been put in developing first and second order features on top of RGB space (e.g., HOG and co-occurrence matrices, resp.). In this paper we evaluate the opponent colors (OPP) space as a biologically inspired alternative for human detection. In particular, by feeding OPP space in the baseline framework of Dalal et al. for human detection (based on RGB, HOG and linear SVM), we will obtain better detection performance than by using RGB space. This is a relevant result since, up to the best of our knowledge, OPP space has not been previously used for human detection. This suggests that in the future it could be worth to compute co-occurrence matrices, self-similarity features, etc., also on top of OPP space, i.e., as we have done with HOG in this paper. |

Abstract |
Camera-based person detection is of paramount interest due to its potential applications. The task is diffcult because the great variety of backgrounds (scenarios, illumination) in which persons are present, as well as their intra-class variability (pose, clothe, occlusion). In fact, the class person is one of the included in the popular PASCAL visual object classes (VOC) challenge. A breakthrough for this challenge, regarding person detection, is due to Felzenszwalb et al. These authors proposed a part-based detector that relies on histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) and latent support vector machines (LatSVM) to learn a model of the whole human body and its constitutive parts, as well as their relative position. Since the approach of Felzenszwalb et al. appeared new variants have been proposed, usually giving rise to more complex models. In this paper, we focus on an issue that has not attracted suficient interest up to now. In particular, we refer to the fact that HOG is usually computed from RGB color space, but other possibilities exist and deserve the corresponding investigation. In this paper we challenge RGB space with the opponent color space (OPP), which is inspired in the human vision system.We will compute the HOG on top of OPP, then we train and test the part-based human classifer by Felzenszwalb et al. using PASCAL VOC challenge protocols and person database. Our experiments demonstrate that OPP outperforms RGB. We also investigate possible differences among types of scenarios: indoor, urban and countryside. Interestingly, our experiments suggest that the beneficts of OPP with respect to RGB mainly come for indoor and countryside scenarios, those in which the human visual system was designed by evolution. |

This paper presents a novel formulation, which derives in a smooth minimization problem, to tackle the rigid registration between a given point set and a model set. Unlike most of the existing works, which are based on minimizing a point-wise correspondence term, we propose to describe the model set by means of an implicit representation. It allows a new definition of the registration error, which works beyond the point level representation. Moreover, it could be used in a gradient-based optimization framework. The proposed approach consists of two stages. Firstly, a novel formulation is proposed that relates the registration parameters with the distance between the model and data set. Secondly, the registration parameters are obtained by means of the Levengberg-Marquardt algorithm. Experimental results and comparisons with state of the art show the validity of the proposed framework. |

Abstract |
The median graph has been shown to be a good choice to obtain a represen- tative of a set of graphs. However, its computation is a complex problem. Recently, graph embedding into vector spaces has been proposed to obtain approximations of the median graph. The problem with such an approach is how to go from a point in the vector space back to a graph in the graph space. The main contribution of this paper is the generalization of this previ- ous method, proposing a generic recursive procedure that permits to recover the graph corresponding to a point in the vector space, introducing only the amount of approximation inherent to the use of graph matching algorithms. In order to evaluate the proposed method, we compare it with the set me- dian and with the other state-of-the-art embedding-based methods for the median graph computation. The experiments are carried out using four dif- ferent databases (one semi-artificial and three containing real-world data). Results show that with the proposed approach we can obtain better medi- ans, in terms of the sum of distances to the training graphs, than with the previous existing methods. |

Abstract |
El análisis de la postura y del rango de movimiento son fundamentales para conocer la optimización del gesto y mejorar, de este modo, el rendimiento y la detección de posibles lesiones. Esta cuantificación es especialmente interesante en deportistas o en pacientes que presentan alguna lesión neurológica o del sistema musculo-esquelético, ya que permite conocer el proceso evolutivo de estos pacientes, evaluar la eficacia de la terapia aplicada y proponer, en caso necesario, una modificación del protocolo de tratamiento.
En este trabajo presentamos un sistema automático que permite, mediante una tecnología no invasiva, la captación automática de marcadores LED situados sobre el paciente y su posterior análisis con el fin de mostrar al especialista datos objetivos que permitan un mejor soporte diagnóstico. También se describe un
sistema analítico de la postura corporal sin marcadores, donde su ejecución durante secuencias dinámicas aporta un alto grado de naturalidad al paciente a la hora de realizar los ejercicios funcionales. |
